Mean-field games and dynamic demand management in power grids

2013

This paper applies mean-field game theory to dynamic demand management. For a large population of electrical heating or cooling appliances (called agents), we provide a mean-field game that guarantees desynchronization of the agents thus improving the power network resilience. Second, for the game at hand, we exhibit a mean-field equilibrium, where each agent adopts a bang-bang switching control with threshold placed at a nominal temperature. At equilibrium, through an opportune design of the terminal penalty, the switching control regulates the mean temperature (computed over the population) and the mains frequency around the nominal value. To overcome Zeno phenomena we also adjust the ban…

Visualizing parameters from loglinear models

2004

This paper presents a graphical display for the parameters resulting from loglinear models. Loglinear models provide a method for analyzing associations between two or several categorical variables and have become widely accepted as a tool for researchers during the last two decades. An important part of the output of any computer program focused on loglinear models is that devoted to estimation of parameters in the model. Traditionally, this output has been presented using tables that indicate the values of the coefficients, the associated standard errors and other related information. Evaluation of these tables can be rather tedious because of the number of values shown as well as their r…

Comments on "Identifying inconsistency in network meta-analysis: Is the net heat plot a reliable method?"

2021

One of the biggest challenges for network meta‐analysis is inconsistency, which occurs when the direct and indirect evidence conflict. Inconsistency causes problems for the estimation and interpretation of treatment effects and treatment contrasts. Krahn and colleagues proposed the net heat approach as a graphical tool for identifying and locating inconsistency within a network of randomized controlled trials. For networks with a treatment loop, the net heat plot displays statistics calculated by temporarily removing each design one at a time, in turn, and assessing the contribution of each remaining design to the inconsistency. The net heat plot takes the form of a matrix which is displaye…

A web application for the unspecific detection of differentially expressed DNA regions in strand-specific expression data

2015

Abstract Genomic technologies allow laboratories to produce large-scale data sets, either through the use of next-generation sequencing or microarray platforms. To explore these data sets and obtain maximum value from the data, researchers view their results alongside all the known features of a given reference genome. To study transcriptional changes that occur under a given condition, researchers search for regions of the genome that are differentially expressed between different experimental conditions. In order to identify these regions several algorithms have been developed over the years, along with some bioinformatic platforms that enable their use. However, currently available appli…

Long-term experiments and strip plot designs

2015

In a long-term experiment usually the experimenter needs to know whether the effect of a treatment varies over time. But time usually has both a fixed and a random effects over the output and the difficulty in the analysis depends on the particular design considered and the availability of covariates. Actually, as shown in the paper, the presence of covariates can be very useful to model the random effect of time. In this paper a model to analyze data from a long-term strip plot design with covariates is proposed. Its effectiveness will be tested using both simulated and real data from a crop rotation experiment.

Test and power considerations for multiple endpoint analyses using sequentially rejective graphical procedures

2009

A variety of powerful test procedures are available for the analysis of clinical trials addressing multiple objectives, such as comparing several treatments with a control, assessing the benefit of a new drug for more than one endpoint, etc. However, some of these procedures have reached a level of complexity that makes it difficult to communicate the underlying test strategies to clinical teams. Graphical approaches have been proposed instead that facilitate the derivation and communication of Bonferroni-based closed test procedures. In this paper we give a coherent description of the methodology and illustrate it with a real clinical trial example. We further discuss suitable power measur…

Gossip: The Architecture of SpreadPlots

2003

A spreadplot is a visualization that simultaneously shows several different views of a dataset or model. The individual views can be dynamic, can support high-interaction direct manipulation, and can be algebraically linked with each other, possibly via an underlying statistical model. Thus, when a data analyst changes the information shown in one view of a statistical model, the changes can be processed by the model and instantly represented in the other views. Spreadplots simplify the analyst's task when many different plots are relevant to the analysis at hand, as is the case in regression analysis, where there are many plots that can be used for model building and diagnosis. On the othe…

Robust Mean Field Games

2015

Recently there has been renewed interest in large-scale games in several research disciplines, with diverse application domains as in the smart grid, cloud computing, financial markets, biochemical reaction networks, transportation science, and molecular biology. Prior works have provided rich mathematical foundations and equilibrium concepts but relatively little in terms of robustness in the presence of uncertainties. In this paper, we study mean field games with uncertainty in both states and payoffs. We consider a population of players with individual states driven by a standard Brownian motion and a disturbance term. The contribution is threefold: First, we establish a mean field syste…
