2019

The main objective of this essay is to comment upon the modes of production and the datings of the 5th century BC non-fractional silver coinage bearing the Greek legend ΠΑΝΟΡΜΟΣ (and variants) and the Punic legend ṣyṣ. The reconstruction of the die sequences published by G. Kenneth Jenkins in 1971 and its recent updates will be discussed in detail. As far as the identification of the issuing authority and of the minting place of the coins with legend ṣyṣ is concerned, for a long time to the center of the scientific research interests, only the inferences made from an analysis of the die sequence have been taken into consideration.

Povertà e vita. Mendicità e filosofia nel mondo greco

2015

2019

The life of Elia the Younger (823-903), a native of Enna in the heart of Sicily, offers itself as an undoubtedly fascinating document in the narrative of political and religious events in the Mediterranean during the 9th century of our era. In Sicily, just a few years before the beginning of the Arab conquest of the island, Elia was born and his human and spiritual story is intertwined with the reality of his times. An expression of that Italo-Greek monasticism that flourished in the provinces of Southern Italy, Elia's life (like that of many of his contemporaries and countrymen) is also, if not above all, that of a tireless traveler. Each trip is an opportunity to visit monasteries, give p…

2017

Ghiorgos Seferis (1900-1971), Nobel prize for literature in 1963, is one of the most significant poets of modern Greece. In his work he reconciles reminiscences of classical Greece with the most salient concern of contemporary poetry. Like many other writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Ghiorgos Seferis used various heteronyms in the course of his life. The most significant are ‘Stratis the sailor’ and ‘Mattia Pascal’. Both are rooted in the biographical events of the poet, as well as in his many cultural experiences.

2019

The review of the unpublished material from the excavations conducted in the 1950-60s, of the Sanctuary of Contrada Mango at Segesta, led to the find of a statuette of an athlete. The piece, which, to our knowledge, is unique in its kind, is rendered in a gray stone of uncertain provenance. The first part of the article presents the context of the statuette, found in close proximity to the north wall of the temenos. The second part describes and gives a detailed analysis of the statuette as regards its style and iconography. The male figure with the head and torso intact suggests, from the rendering of the pectoral and back muscles and right shoulder stance with the conveyed weight distribu…

Segesta, Santuario di Contrada Mango. Materiali e contesti degli scavi Tusa

2023

The volume is the edition of the old excavations carried out in Segesta, at the Sanctuary of Contrada Mango, between the 1950s and the 1960s of the twentieth century. The sanctuary is located on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Barbaro. It has returned a monumental peribolos and the remains of a peripteral temple. The sacred area documents phenomena of cultural interaction between the Elymian center and the Hellenic environment (Selinuntine first of all) in the Archaic and Classical Ages. It is an intense and multiform relationship, now made tangible not only by the monumental sacred architecture but also by the architectural ornamentations, the statuary in Parian marble, the imported cera…
