Role of the Online Tutor in Establishing Social Presence in Asynchronous Text-Based Collaborative Learning Environments
2017
The main objective of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the online tutor’s role in establishing and maintaining the feeling of social presence among the participants in asynchronous text-based collaborative learning environments. The context of the study is a distributed online course involving groups of participants who do not have a shared history of working together. The data were collected from a student survey and follow-up interviews. The study shows how the online tutor’s facilitation in such environments is crucial, and several practical implications for online tutors are presented. In addition, complementing the asynchronous text-based learning platform with synchr…
Multiplicity of ground states for the scalar curvature equation
2019
We study existence and multiplicity of radial ground states for the scalar curvature equation $$\begin{aligned} \Delta u+ K(|x|)\, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}=0, \quad x\in {{\mathbb {R}}}^n, \quad n>2, \end{aligned}$$when the function $$K:{{\mathbb {R}}}^+\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}^+$$ is bounded above and below by two positive constants, i.e. $$0 0$$, it is decreasing in (0, 1) and increasing in $$(1,+\infty )$$. Chen and Lin (Commun Partial Differ Equ 24:785–799, 1999) had shown the existence of a large number of bubble tower solutions if K is a sufficiently small perturbation of a positive constant. Our main purpose is to improve such a result by considering a non-perturbative situation: we ar…
Multiplicity of Radial Ground States for the Scalar Curvature Equation Without Reciprocal Symmetry
2022
AbstractWe study existence and multiplicity of positive ground states for the scalar curvature equation $$\begin{aligned} \varDelta u+ K(|x|)\, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}=0, \quad x\in {{\mathbb {R}}}^n\,, \quad n>2, \end{aligned}$$ Δ u + K ( | x | ) u n + 2 n - 2 = 0 , x ∈ R n , n > 2 , when the function $$K:{{\mathbb {R}}}^+\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}^+$$ K : R + → R + is bounded above and below by two positive constants, i.e. $$0<\underline{K} \le K(r) \le \overline{K}$$ 0 < K ̲ ≤ K ( r ) ≤ K ¯ for every $$r > 0$$ r > 0 , it is decreasing in $$(0,{{{\mathcal {R}}}})$$ ( 0 , R ) and increasing in $$({{{\mathcal {R}}}},+\infty )$$ ( R , + ∞ ) for a certain $${{{\mathcal {R}}}}&g…
Association between climate and new daily diagnoses of COVID-19
2020
AbstractBackgroundAlthough evidence is accumulating that climate conditions may positively or negatively influence the scale of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks, uncertainty remains concerning the real impact of climate factors on viral transmission. Methods. The number of new daily cases of COVID-19 diagnosed in Verona (Italy) was retrieved from the official website of Veneto Region, while information on daily weather parameters in the same area was downloaded from IlMeteo website, a renowned Italian technological company specialized in weather forecasts. The search period ranged between March 1 to November 11, 2020. The number of new daily COVID-19 cases and meteorological da…
GIS-based groundwater potential mapping in Shahroud plain, Iran. A comparison among statistical (bivariate and multivariate), data mining and MCDM ap…
2019
Abstract In arid and semi-arid areas, groundwater resource is one of the most important water sources by the humankind. Knowledge of groundwater distribution over space, associated flow and basic exploitation measures can play a significant role in planning sustainable development, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Groundwater potential mapping (GWPM) fits in this context as the tool used to predict the spatial distribution of groundwater. In this research we tested four GIS-based models for GWPM, consisting of: i) random forest (RF); ii) weight of evidence (WoE); iii) binary logistic regression (BLR); and iv) technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) mul…
Global, regional, and national burden of mortality associated with non-optimal ambient temperatures from 2000 to 2019: a three-stage modelling study
2021
Background: Exposure to cold or hot temperatures is associated with premature deaths. We aimed to evaluate the global, regional, and national mortality burden associated with non-optimal ambient temperatures. Methods: In this modelling study, we collected time-series data on mortality and ambient temperatures from 750 locations in 43 countries and five meta-predictors at a grid size of 0·5° × 0·5° across the globe. A three-stage analysis strategy was used. First, the temperature–mortality association was fitted for each location by use of a time-series regression. Second, a multivariate meta-regression model was built between location-specific estimates and meta-predictors. Finally, the gri…
Application of DPSIR framework to analyze the groundwater pollution threats of municipal solid waste: Case study Médiouna Landfill, Morocco
2021
This study addresses the issue of groundwater resources quality affected by solid waste disposed of in the Médiouna dumping site. In this order, we applied the Driving forcePressureStateImpact Response model (DPSIR) model combined with external factors of SWOT analysis (Opportunities and Threats) to assess the environmental impact of waste from Médiouna landfill on groundwater. The analysis study revealed that the continuous demographic expansion and economic growth made solid waste a complex problem. The study highlights the urgent need for implementing new strategies and redesigning more effective, operational and realizable management projects to rehabilitate the Médiouna landfill. In ad…
Slower Walking Speed in Older Men Improves Triceps Surae Force Generation Ability
2016
Purpose \ud Older adults walk slower than young adults, but it is not known why. Previous research suggests that ankle plantarflexors may have a crucial role in the reduction of walking speed. The purpose of this study was to investigate age-related differences in triceps surae muscle–tendon function during walking to further investigate the role of plantarflexors in the age-related reduction of walking speed.\ud \ud Methods \ud Medial gastrocnemius and soleus muscle fascicle lengths were measured using ultrasound imaging during walking from 13 young (25 ± 4 yr) men at preferred walking speed and from 13 older (73 ± 5 yr) men at preferred speed and at the young men’s preferred speed. Muscle…
Structure and closure mechanism of the human umbilical artery
1978
The structure of the fully-patent umbilical artery and rearrangement of its structural elements with postnatal closure were examined in 10 centimeter long umbilical cord segments which were double-clamped at different time intervals after delivery. The fully-patent umbilical artery consists of two main layers: an outer layer of circularly arranged smooth muscle cells and an inner layer which shows rather irregularly and loosely arranged cells embedded in abundant metachromatic ground substance. No predominantly longitudinal arrangements of cells and fibers reported by earlier investigators could be identified in the inner layer. Closure of the umbilical arteries is initiated by numerous loc…
Mössbauer effect study of the electronic ground state of iron(II)in tris(2-chlorophenanthroline)iron(II) perchlorate
1976
Abstract Mossbauer spectra of [Fe(2-Cl-phen) 3 ](ClO 4 ) 2 ·H 2 O have been measured in the temperature range 293 − 5 K. The spectra indicate that the iron atom in this compound possesses a spin quintet ground state throughout the temperature range under study, in contradiction to the suggested high spin-low spin transition, which has been concluded from a magnetic susceptibility study by other authors. From a theoretical analysis of the temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting, with trigonal distortion, spin-orbit coupling, and effects of covalency taken into account, the ground term of iron(II) in this compound has been elucidated as being 5 A 1 ( 5 T 2g ), separated from the 5 …
