Spins, moments and charge radii in the isotopic series181Hg-191Hg

1976

The hyperfine structure splitting and the isotope shift in the (6 s2 1S0 - 6s 6p3P1,λ=2,537 A) line of very neutron deficient Hg isotopes were determined by the β radiation detected optical pumping method (β-RADOP). In addition, nuclear magnetic resonance was observed in the atomic ground state. The results are Mean-square nuclear charge radii are calculated. Interpreting the sudden change of nuclear radius between187Hg and185Hg δ〈r2〉187,185=0.42(5)fm2 as oblate-prolate shape transition, one obtains δ〈β2〉 =0.054(5).

Soft modes and mode splitting in paramagnetic TbP§

1980

In contrast to spin-only systems the paramagnetic phases of systems with crystal field split ground multiplets exhibit magnetic excitations of finite energy. In the presence of a magnetic exchange coupling the excitons will propagate through the lattice. A measurement of the dispersion allows in principle an insight into the exchange interaction, which is of fundamental importance for the understanding of the magnetic phenomena. Unfortunately the evolution of the dispersion at low temperatures is in most cases interrupted by the onset of magnetic order due to an alignment of the magnetic moments of the crystal field ground state. A noticeable dispersion of well-defined excitons is only expe…

Unveiling ν secrets with cosmological data: Neutrino masses and mass hierarchy

2017

Using some of the latest cosmological datasets publicly available, we derive the strongest bounds in the literature on the sum of the three active neutrino masses, $M_\nu$, within the assumption of a background flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. In the most conservative scheme, combining Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) data, as well as the up-to-date constraint on the optical depth to reionization ($\tau$), the tightest $95\%$ confidence level (C.L.) upper bound we find is $M_\nu0.06\,{\rm eV}$ from oscillations data would raise the quoted upper bounds by ${\cal O}(0.1\sigma)$ and would not affect our conclusions.

Analyzing lepton flavor universality in the decays Λb→Λc(*)(12±,32−)+ℓν¯ℓ

2018

Lepton flavor universality can be tested in the semileptonic decays Λb→Λc(*), where Λc(*) denotes either the ground state Λc(2286) (with JP=1/2+) or its orbital excitations Λc(2595) (with JP=1/2−) and Λc(2625) (with JP=3/2−). We calculate the differential decay rates as well as the branching fractions of these decays for both tauonic and muonic modes with form factors obtained from a covariant confined quark model previously developed by us. We present results for the rate ratios of the tauonic and muonic modes which provide important tests of lepton flavor universality in forthcoming experiments.

Most constraining cosmological neutrino mass bounds

2021

We present here up-to-date neutrino mass limits exploiting the most recent cosmological data sets. By making use of the cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuation and polarization measurements, supernovae Ia luminosity distances, baryon acoustic oscillation observations and determinations of the growth rate parameter, we are able to set the most constraining bound to date, $\ensuremath{\sum}{m}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}l0.09\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ at 95% C.L. This very tight limit is obtained without the assumption of any prior on the value of the Hubble constant and highly compromises the viability of the inverted mass ordering as the underlying neutrino mass pattern in nature. The …

Neutrino mass ordering at DUNE: An extra ν bonus

2019

We study the possibility of extracting the neutrino mass ordering at the future Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment using atmospheric neutrinos, which will be available before the muon neutrino beam starts being perational. The large statistics of the atmospheric muon neutrino and antineutrino samples at the far detector, together with the baselines of thousands of kilometers that these atmospheric (anti)neutrinos travel, provide the ideal ingredients to extract the neutrino mass ordering via matter effects in the neutrino propagation through the Earth. Crucially, muon capture by Argon provides excellent charge-tagging, allowing to disentangle the neutrino and antineutrino signature. This …

Pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos in supernovae.

1990

The emissivity was calculated for the pair production of helicity-flipped neutrinos, in a way that can be used in supernova calculations. Also presented are simple estimates which show that such process can act as an efficient energy-loss mechanism in the shocked supernova core, and this fact is used to extract neutrino mass limits from SN 1987A neutrino observations.

Charge and magnetic moment of the neutrino in the background field method and in the linear R-xi(L) gauge

1999

We present a computation of the charge and the magnetic moment of the neutrino in the recently developed electro-weak Background Field Method and in the linear $R_{\xi}^L$ gauge. First, we deduce a formal Ward-Takahashi identity which implies the immediate cancellation of the neutrino electric charge. This Ward-Takahashi identity is as simple as that for QED. The computation of the (proper and improper) one loop vertex diagrams contributing to the neutrino electric charge is also presented in an arbitrary gauge, checking in this way the Ward-Takahashi identity previously obtained. Finally, the calculation of the magnetic moment of the neutrino, in the minimal extension of the Standard Model…

Masses and magnetic moments of ground-state baryons in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

2012

We report on some recent developments in our understanding of the light-quark mass dependence and the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking corrections to the magnetic moments of the ground-state baryons in a covariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory, the so-called EOMS formulation. We show that this covariant ChPT exhibits some promising features compared to its heavy-baryon and infrared counterparts.

Invisible neutrino decay in precision cosmology

2021

We revisit the topic of invisible neutrino decay in the precision cosmological context, via a first-principles approach to understanding the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure phenomenology of such a non-standard physics scenario. Assuming an effective Lagrangian in which a heavier standard-model neutrino $\nu_H$ couples to a lighter one $\nu_l$ and a massless scalar particle $\phi$ via a Yukawa interaction, we derive from first principles the complete set of Boltzmann equations, at both the spatially homogeneous and the first-order inhomogeneous levels, for the phase space densities of $\nu_H$, $\nu_l$, and $\phi$ in the presence of the relevant decay and inverse decay p…
