The impact of strict and forced confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic on positive functioning variables, emotional distress, and posttraumatic gro…

2021

ABSTRACT Background: The adverse consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health have been widely studied in recent months. However, few studies have examined the protective psychological factors that may explain how individuals are coping with the COVID-19 pandemic and its forced confinements. Objective: This study analyzes the impact of confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic on positive functioning variables (resilience, meaning of life, gratitude, compassion, life satisfaction), emotional distress (depression, anxiety, perceived stress, affect), and posttraumatic growth (PTG). The impact was measured during and after the first month of strict and obligatory confinement in Spain.…

Europeanisation as a driver of dependent financialisation in East-Central Europe: insights from the Baltic states

2021

The aim of this paper is to contribute to advancing the academic debate on dependent financialisation through a focus on East-Central Europe. In doing so, the paper identifies the role of Europeanisation as a driver of dependent financialisation using the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as case studies. The paper makes two main contributions to the literature on dependent financialisation. First, it argues that, through the establishment of 'financial chains', dependent financialisation creates asymmetric co-dependencies and bilateral risks between the 'dependent' economies in the (semi-)periphery and the financial actors in core countries. While the (semi-)peripheral economi…

The Divergent Effect of Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein (IGFBP) - 1 on IGF-induced Steroidogenesis in Bovine Adrenocortical Cells is not d…

2007

In previous studies we have shown that insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II stimulates basal as well as ACTH-induced cortisol secretion from bovine adrenocortical cells more potently than IGF-I. The steroidogenic effect of both, IGF-I and IGF-II, is mediated through the IGF-I receptor and modified by locally produced IGF binding proteins. Further studies demonstrate that bovine adrenocortical cells do synthesize IGFBP-1 to -4 and that their secretion is regulated differentially by IGFs and ACTH. Since IGFBP-1 selectively is induced 3- to 4- fold by ACTH, the aim of the following studies was to evaluate the effect of IGFBP-1 on IGF-induced cortisol secretion from bovine adrenocortical cells i…

Fatigue crack growth through particulate clusters in polycarbonate material

2011

The interaction of a crack with a perfectly bonded inclusion or a cluster of inclusions in polycarbonate matrix was investigated through both numerical simulations and fatigue tests. Stress intensity factors (K(I)) were evaluated by boundary element method for several particle sizes, position and finally for inclusion cluster as a precursor study for the experiments. The numerical simulation has shown the crack tendency to circumvent the inclusions with consequential reduction of the growth rate. Fatigue crack growth tests were carried out on several particle-filled specimens at constant value of the applied stress intensity factor range (Delta K(Iapp)) highlighting the crack delay due to t…

Knowledge Transfer Within Artisan Families in Early Nineteenth-Century Rural Finland

2019

In nineteenth‑century Finland, artisans constituted an important part of society, and the majority of them lived in the countryside. Rural artisans were jacks-of-all-trades who met the needs of country folk. This chapter studies the rural artisans’ children and explores how craft knowledge was often transferred to the next generation. In early modern society, it was only natural that the son followed his father’s trade. This was a matter of societal stability and maintaining the social order. It was also practical to invest in the children’s future by transferring the family’s craft knowledge and skills to the offspring, who would provide future care for the elders in turn. Nonetheless, not…

French-speaking universities in sub-Saharan Africa

1991

Administrators of French-speaking sub-saharan African universties are faced with a crule dilemna : with the passing years, their dwindling budgets have made it increasingly difficult for them to guarantee the proper functionning of their etablishments ; hence a decline in the level of competence of graduates and in research standards. At the same time, some studies show that unit costs are too high ant that higher education receives an inordinate amount of educational funding. They recommend that the squeeze on university budgets be sustained and tightened. The prmary aim of this article is to provide evidence to support these two seemingly contradictory assessments. It is true that while Fr…

The Real Effect of Financial Crises in the European Transition Economies

2010

Working Paper GATE 2009-20; International audience; The aim of this work is to assess the impact of financial crises on output for 11 European transition economies (CEECs). The results suggest that financial crises have a significant and permanent effect, lowering long-term output by about 17 percent. The effect is more important in smaller countries, with relative higher dependence on external financing, and in which the banking sector noticed more important financial disequilibria. We also found that fiscal policy measures have been the most efficient tools in dealing with the crises, while the role of monetary policy instruments has been rather blinded. Exchange rate resulted to be more …

Targeted Therapies for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

2015

The discovery of new oncogenic driver mutations and the clinical development of targeted therapies have completely changed the paradigm treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs), erlotinib, gefitinib, afatinib, ALK-inhibitors, crizotinib, and ceritinib, have been already approved for clinical use, benefiting many patients whose tumors harbor, respectively, EGFR or EML4-ALK molecular alterations. However, despite an initial benefit, tumor progression inevitably occurs, due to the development of acquired resistance to the targeted treatments. Several mechanisms of resistance have been identified, such as the seco…

Determinants of complementary feeding practices in infants from the ELFE study : familial health, socio-economic and demographic characteristics and …

2018

Infant feeding practices could be risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, via early nutritional programming. These practices have not been described in detail in France until now and knowing their determinants could help improve nutritional prevention interventions. For more than 11 000 children followed in the ELFE cohort (French Longitudinal Study since childhood), we calculated the age at introduction of complementary feeding (CFg) and of food groups, evaluated the uses of added sugar, salt and fat from 3 to 10 months old, and defined three principal components of early feeding. Their associations with familial characteristics were evaluated, taking in account the influence of the infan…

Human Capital Quality and Economic Growth

2007

07001 - Second version : September 2007; The estimation of the relationship between education and economic growth is marked by contradictions. These contradictions underline the lack of precision characterizing indicators of human capital. This paper constructs new indicators based on a pool of international surveys concerning pupil assessment. Thus, our new database, which includes 105 countries, makes it possible to confirm or not the positive relationship between education and growth. Taking into account the endogeneity of education, we measure a positive effect of qualitative indicators of human capital and the growth of countries between 1960 and 2000. The contribution of education to …
