Carbohydrate availability affects growth and metabolism in peach fruit

Along with sucrose, sorbitol represents the main photosynthetic product and form of translocated carbon in peach. This study aimed at determining whether peach fruit carbohydrate metabolism is affected by changes in source-sink balance, and specifically whether sorbitol or sucrose availability regulates fruit enzyme activities and growth. In various trials, different levels of assimilate availability to growing fruits were induced in vivo, by varying crop load of entire trees, leaf:fruit ratio (L:F) of fruiting shoots, or by interrupting the phloem stream (girdling) to individual fruits. Effects of two essential oil mouthrinses on 4-day supragingival plaque regrowth: A randomized cross-over study

Purpose: To investigate the plaque inhibiting effects of two commercially available mouthrinses containing essential oils (EO). Both products contained the same concentration of EO, but one of them did not contain ethanol. Methods: The study was an observer-masked, randomized, 4 × 4 Latin square cross-over design, balanced for carryover effects, involving 12 participants in a 4-day plaque regrowth model. A 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX) rinse and a saline solution served as positive and negative controls, respectively. Spatial Localization in Manufacturing: A Cross-Country Analysis

This paper employs a homogenous firms' database to investigate industry localiza- tion in European countries. More specifically, we compare, across industries and countries, the predictions of two of the most popular localization indices, i.e., the Ellison and Glaeser index (Ellison and Glaeser, 1997) and the Duranton and Over- man index (Duranton and Overman, 2005). We find that, independently from the index used, localization is a pervasive phenomenon in all countries studied, but the degree of localization is very uneven across industries in each country. Classical growth of hard-sphere colloidal crystals.

The classical theory of nucleation and growth of crystals is examined for concentrated suspensions of hard-sphere colloidal particles. The work of Russel is modified, extended, and evaluated, explicitly. Specifically, the Wilson-Frenkel growth law is modified to include the Gibbs-Thomson effect and is evaluated numerically. The results demonstrate that there is a critical nucleus radius below which crystal nuclei will not grow. A kinetic coefficient determines the maximum growth velocity possible. Heterogeneous and homogeneous crystal nucleation in a colloidal model system of charged spheres at low metastabilities

We have studied the nucleation kinetics in the bulk as well as at the container walls of a charged sphere colloidal model system under salt-free conditions close to the fluid–crystal phase boundary. We determined time resolved nucleation rate densities for heterogeneous nucleation on the wall, the corresponding nucleation rate densities for homogeneous nucleation and compare the resulting nucleation barrier heights. Observation of instability of faceted crystals in lipid monolayers

Abstract The morphological instabilities of two-dimensional hexagonal crystals in lipid monolayers are studied. Fluorescence microscopy indicates that beyond a critical size the faceted crystal develops into dendrites with unusual tip growth behavior, which is not consistent with the current theory of dendritic growth. The morphological transitions in relation to the driving force for two-dimensional crystal growth are also studied.

We report scalable controlled synthesis of CdSe tetrapods with high morphological uniformity based on the continuous precursor injection (CPI) approach with halide ligands. The CPI approach involves the successive injection of precursors into the seed solution at a controlled rate so that the reaction condition remains in the kinetic growth regime. To initiate the successful development of tetrapod structure, the controlled amount of halide ligands are added during the reaction, which triggered the formation of wurtzite arms on {111}-facets of the zincblende seeds. Oxygen Consumption Rate of Tumour Cells as a Function of their Proliferative Status

The oxygen consumption rate \(\left( \dot{Q}{{O}_{2}} \right)\) of EMT6/Ro-cells cultured as monolayers was investigated as a function of their proliferative status. The transition of these cells from the exponential to the plateau growth phase was associated with a continuous decrease in \(\dot{Q}{{O}_{2}}\) per single cell. This decrease can partially be attributed to a corresponding decline in cellular volume. In addition, the \(\dot{Q}{{O}_{2}}\) per cell volume was also reduced during the passage of the cells through the growth phase described.
