We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of the kinetics of ordering in the two-dimensional nearest-neighbor Ising model in anL xM geometry with two free boundaries of length M≫L. This model can be viewed as representing an adsorbant on a stepped surface with mean terrace widthL. We follow the ordering kinetics after quenches to temperatures 0.25 ⩽ T/Tc ⩽ 1 starting from a random initial configuration at a coverage ofΘ=0.5 in the corresponding lattice gas picture. An empirical analysis of growth volatility: A Markov chain approach

This paper studies the determinants of growth rate volatility, focusing on the effect of level of GDP, structural change and the size of economy. First we provide a graphical analysis based on nonparametric techniques, then a quantitative analysis which follows the distribution dynamics approach. Growth volatility appears to (i) decrease with per capita GDP, (ii) increase with the share of the agricultural sector on GDP and, (iii) decrease with the size of the economy, measured by a combination of total GDP and trade openness. However, we show that the explanatory power of per capita GDP tends to vanish when we control for the size of the economy. © 2005 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Increase in dissolution rate of sodium chlorate induced by elastic strain

Recent experimental studies carried out on the kinetics of crystal growth in solution have revealed that mechanically induced elastic strain can have a strong influence on the crystal growth rate. We present experimental evidence to show that it can also strongly affect the dissolution rate. Sodium chlorate crystals held in an undersaturated sodium chlorate solution and uniaxially stressed in compression to values up to 15 MPa dissolved up to about 1.3 times faster than crystals free of stress. The increase in dissolution rate varies linearly with the stress.

Thermodynamics and continuum fracture mechanics for nonlocal-elastic plastic materials

Nonlocal elasticity is used as an improved elasticity model which engenders no crack-tip stress singularities and thus makes applicable the classical stress-based failure criteria. Crack growth analysis at adhesive–adherent interface in bonded joints under mixed mode I/II

The propagation of an interface crack subjected to mixed mode I/II was investigated for two 2024-T351 aluminum thin layers joined by means of DP760 epoxy adhesive produced by 3M©. On the basis of beam theory, an analytical expression for computing the energy release rate is presented for the mixed-mode end loaded split (MMELS) test. The analytical strain energy release rate was compared by finite element (FE) analysis using the virtual crack closure technique (VCCT). Genetic and morphometric variation of Mediterranean hake, Merluccius merluccius, in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean)

Allozyme, morphometric and growth analyses were applied to samples collected in the Strait of Sicily (central Mediterranean Sea) to test the hypothesis of the existence of a unique hake stock (Merluccius merluccius) in the study area. The level of genetic variation was detected from five polymorphic loci (ADH*, PGI-1*, PGI-2*, PGM*, SOD-1*). The average observed heterozygosity amounted to 0.421, while the average expected was 0.353. Revisiting the Trade-off Between Risk and Incentives: The Shocking Effect of Random Shocks?

Despite its central role in the theory of incentives, empirical evidence of a trade-off between risk and incentives remains scarce. We reexamine this trade-off in a workplace lab environment and find that, in line with theory, principals increase fixed pay while lowering performance pay when the relationship between effort and output is noisier. Unexpectedly, agents produce substantially more in the noisy environment than in the baseline despite weaker incentives. In addition, principals’ earnings are significantly higher in the noisy environment.
