Fire Responses to the 2010 and 2015/2016 Amazonian Droughts

Extreme droughts in Amazonia cause anomalous increase in fire occurrence, disrupting the stability of environmental, social and economic systems. Thus, understanding how droughts affect fire patterns in this region is essential for anticipating and planning actions for remediation of possible impacts. Focused on the Brazilian Amazon biome, we investigated fire responses to the 2010 and 2015/2016 Amazonian droughts using a remote sensing data. Our results revealed that the 2015/2016 drought surpassed the 2010 drought in intensity and extent. Efficient growth of sub-micrometric MOF crystals inside the channels of AAO membranes

International audience; A dynamic step-by-step methodology has been implemented to grow the HKUST-1 porous coordination polymer inside commercial anodic aluminium oxide membranes. Efficient crystal growth is achieved from the membrane inner walls and over the whole membrane thickness when copper acetate colloidal suspensions and benzene tricarboxylic acid solutions are forced to flow through the membrane. Sorption properties of the HKUST-1 embedded in membranes show selectivity for CO2 over CO, CH4, O2 and N2 similar to the bulk material.

Mode and Rate of Growth in Ammonoids

In this chapter we discuss the mode and rate of growth in ammonoids, focusing primarily on postembryonic growth. We first discuss the general mode of growth and then describe the ontogenetic sequence of growth stages. These stages are recognized on the basis of changes in morphology. For example, a graph of the increase in size of whorl width versus shell diameter in an individual reveals changes through ontogeny that pinpoint the end of one growth stage and the beginning of another. Wiedemann–Steiner syndrome (WDSTS) is a Mendelian syndromic intellectual disability (ID) condition associated with hypertrichosis cubiti, short stature, and characteristic facies caused by pathogenic variants in the KMT2A gene. Clinical features can be inconclusive in mild and unusual WDSTS presentations with variable ID (mild to severe), facies (typical or not) and other associated malformations (bone, cerebral, renal, cardiac and ophthalmological anomalies). Influence of epigallocatechin gallate and phenolic compounds from green tea on the growth of Oenococcus oeni

Aims:  To investigate the effect of phenolic compounds on the growth of Oenococcus oeni. Methods and Results:  Oenococci are usually grown in media often supplemented with complex additives such as tomato juice. In order to improve our knowledge about the growth requirements of oenococci, we added several juices and leaf extracts such as green tea to the culture media and screened them for growth-stimulating substances to substitute complex supplements such as juices by more defined components. We found that also green tea could cause a growth stimulation of Oenococcus oeni strain B2. Mechanisms of polymer crystallization from flowing solutions

The recent experimental results on flow-induced crystallization by Pennings and coworkers show that extremely rigid polyethylene fibers can be obtained in a shear flow. On the other hand, the mechanism by which these flow-induced crystals are produced is still open to investigation. In this work a few aspects of fibrous crystal growth are theoretically investigated. The molecular dynamics of chains partly attached to the crystal and partly immersed in the solution is considered. The influence of temperature and of geometrical factors is also discussed.

The aim of this chapter is to examine how the uncertainty and instability of working life is reflected in Finnish polytechnic graduates’ employment. The present study investigates the fields of business and engineering by comparing two graduate cohorts. The societal context in which new graduates enter working life is that of an increasing precariousness in the labour market, which affects higher education graduates as well as the general population.
