Effects of combined hormone replacement therapy or its effective agents on the IGF-1 pathway in skeletal muscle.
2010
Objectives To investigate the effects of combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and its effective agents on the IGF-1 signaling pathway. Design and methods To examine the effects of HRT on skeletal muscle in vivo, we utilized pre- and post-intervention samples from a randomized double blinded trial with 50–57-year-old women. The intervention included the year-long use of either HRT preparation (2 mg 17β-estradiol, E2; 1 mg norethisterone acetate, NETA, n = 10) or placebo (CO, n = 9). Microarray technology and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were used to study the expression of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-1) and its splice variants as well as IGF-1 receptor, Akt1, mTOR, FOXO1, FOXO3, atrog…
Dewey, Hippie Communes, and Education
2021
2019
The Influence of Student Abilities and High School on Student Growth: A Case Study of Chinese National College Entrance Exam
2019
Enabled by available educational data and data mining techniques, educational data analysis has become a hot topic. Current researches mainly focus on the prediction of problems and performance rather than revealing the underlying causal relationships. Based on a unique exam data, we extracted the abilities of examinee from HSEE (High School Entrance Exam) based on the knowledge of educational experts, then we measured student growth from middle school to high school in total score and subject scores. We studied the impact of high school ranking and student abilities of HSEE on student growth by multiple linear regression model, in which high school ranking is divided into 5 levels, Level 1…
Synthesis of Monodisperse Spherical Nanocrystals
2016
Nanoparticles, small units of matter with dimensions in the range 1-100 nm, exhibit many advantageous size-dependent magnetic, electrical, chemical and optical prop- erties, which are not observed at the microscale or bulk. These properties are extremely sensitive to particle size, and thus the ability to produce monodisperse particles is critical. Due to its ease of use and flexibility, precipitation of nanoparticles from solution is one of the most widely used synthesis methods. The main disadvantage of this method is that the relationship between particle growth and system conditions is not fully understood. In practice, the optimal reaction conditions are usually ascertained empirically…
Effects of weekend starvation and the duration of daily feeding on production parameters of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss
2021
It would often be practical to starve the cultivated fishes over the weekends, e.g. to save in labour costs. We evaluated the possibility that domesticated juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) could compensate for the lost growth of the 2-day weekend starvation by either hyperphagic response and/or by lower feed conversion ratio, compared to the fish fed every day in an 8-week experiment. Rainbow trout (initial weight c. 30 g, temperature 16 °C) starved during the weekends were able to increase feed intake during the weekdays clearly above the intake of the control fish after the first two weekends, also seen as an increase of the compensation coefficients over the last four weeks o…
THE IMPACT OF FISCAL POLICY ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE FOUNDING COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
2015
Changes in fiscal policy have an impact on aggregate demand, the allocation of resources and income distribution. The present study highlights the impact of fiscal policy on the founding countries of the European Union in the period 2000-2011. The evolution of GDP / capita was explained using the structure of tax revenues, inflation, budget deficit and also qualitative variables like the economic crisis and weather conditions. The results of the analysis indicate that fiscal policy has a significant negative impact on the founding countries of the European Union, in particular through measures taken in respect of value added tax, excise duties, income taxes for households and corporations a…
FISCAL POLICY`S INFLUENCE ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
2012
In this paper we study the impact of the fiscal policy on the economic growth for European Union, for the period 2000-2009. This subject represents a very debated problem in the economic literature. Our findings shows that, from the analysis of correlation between economic growth rate and total rate of taxation, there is generally an inverse relationship, meaning that an increase in the tax rate adversely affects economic growth. Continuing the analysis of the correlation between economic growth rate and total tax rate components it can be seen that there is an inverse relationship between labor taxation and capital taxation and economic growth in EU Member States. Both labour and capital t…
Cytotoxicity of 91 Kenyan indigenous medicinal plants towards human CCRF-CEM leukemia cells.
2015
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Plants from Kenyan flora are traditionally used against many ailments, including cancer and related diseases. Cancer is characterized as a condition with complex signs and symptoms. Recently there are recommendations that ethnopharmacological usages such as immune and skin disorders, inflammatory, infectious, parasitic and viral diseases should be taken into account when selecting plants that treat cancer. Aim The present study was aimed at investigating the cytotoxicity of a plethora of 145 plant parts from 91 medicinal plants, most of which are used in the management of cancer and related diseases by different communities in Kenya, against CCRF-CEM …
Role of dioxygenase α-DOX2 and SA in basal response and in hexanoic acid-induced resistance of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants against Botrytis …
2015
Resistance of tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum) to the fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea requires complex interplay between hormonal signalling. In this study, we explored the involvement of new oxylipins in the tomato basal and induced response to this necrotroph through the functional analysis of the tomato α-dioxygenase2 (α-DOX2)-deficient mutant divaricata. We also investigated the role of SA in the defence response against this necrotrophic fungus using SA-deficient tomato nahG plants. The plants lacking dioxigenase α-DOX2, which catalyses oxylipins production from fatty acids, were more susceptible to Botrytis, and hexanoic acid-induced resistance (Hx-IR) was impaired; hence α-DOX2 is requ…
