Real-time and low-cost sensing technique based on photonic bandgap structures

[EN] A technique for the development of low-cost and high-sensitivity photonic biosensing devices is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this technique, a photonic bandgap structure is used as transducer, but its readout is performed by simply using a broadband source, an optical filter, and a power meter, without the need of obtaining the transmission spectrum of the structure; thus, a really low-cost system and real-time results are achieved. Experimental results show that it is possible to detect very low refractive index variations, achieving a detection limit below 2 x 10(-6) refractive index units using this low-cost measuring technique. Dielectric versus topographic contrast in near-field microscopy

Using a fully vectorial three-dimensional numerical approach (generalized field propagator, based on Green's tensor technique), we investigate the near-field images produced by subwavelength objects buried in a dielectric surface. We study the influence of the object index, size, and depth on the near field. We emphasize the similarity between the near field spawned by an object buried in the surface (dielectric contrast) and that spawned by a protrusion on the surface (topographic contrast). We report on the first investigations into parametric solitary-wave formation in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals and present experimental results obtained in an hexagonally poled LiNbO3 waveguide designed for twin-beam second harmonic generation at telecom wavelengths.
The role of nonlinear optical absorption in narrowband difference-frequency terahertz-wave generation

We present a general analysis of the influence of nonlinear optical absorption on terahertz generation via optical difference frequency generation, when reaching for the quantum conversion efficiency limit. By casting the equations governing the process in a suitably normalized form, including either two-photon- or three-photon-absorption terms, we have been able to plot universal charts for phase matched optical-to-terahertz conversion for different values of the nonlinear absorption coefficients. Tapered Two-Wire Waveguide for Time-Domain Integration of Broadband Terahertz Pulses

We show the time-domain integration of terahertz pulses achieved in a sub-wavelength, tapered two-wire waveguide. Both simulation and experimental results prove the time integration functionality of this waveguide topology.
Modelling leaky photonic wires: a mode solver comparison

We present results from a mode solver comparison held within the framework of the European COST P11 project. The structure modelled is a high-index contrast photonic wire in silicon-oninsulator subject to substrate leakage. The methods compared are both in-house developed and commercial, and range from effective index and perturbation methods, over finite-element and finite-difference codes, beam propagation methods, to film mode matching methods and plane wave expansion methods.

Quasideterministic realization of a universal quantum gate in a single scattering process

We show that a flying particle, such as an electron or a photon, scattering along a one-dimensional waveguide from a pair of static spin-1/2 centers, such as quantum dots, can implement a CZ gate (universal for quantum computation) between them. This occurs quasi-deterministically in a single scattering event, hence with no need for any post-selection or iteration, {and} without demanding the flying particle to bear any internal spin. We show that an easily matched hard-wall boundary condition along with the elastic nature of the process are key to such performances.
Ultraviolet quasi-phase-matched second harmonic generation in surface periodically poled lithium niobate optical waveguides

The compatibility of low concentration (alpha-phase) proton exchange channel waveguides with electric field surface periodic poling of congruent lithium niobate (SPPLN) crystals has been experimentally demonstrated. With such waveguides, we obtained ultraviolet second harmonic generation (SHG) by first order quasi-phase-matching (QPM), a result made possible by the fabrication, on Z-cut LN crystals, of periodic structures with a pitch down to 750 nm. Nonlinear copropagating QPM-SHG measurements have been carried out on such structures. The pump source was a Ti:sapphire laser with a tunability range of 700-980 nm and a 40 GHz linewidth. The incorporation of the bidentate ligand pyridine-2-azo-p-dimethylaniline (PADA) into micellar aggregates of the dimeric cationic surfactants propanediyl-, hexanediyl- and dodecanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dimethylcetylammonium nitrate) (16-3-16,2NO(3)(-), 16-6-16,2NO(3)(-) and 16-12-16,2NO(3)(-), respectively) has been studied at 25 degreesC by examining the kinetics of the complexation reaction of the Ni(II) ion with this ligand.
