Uses of places and setting preferences in a French Antarctic station

2007

The various uses of space as well as the environmental preferences of wintering people were investigated during 1 year in a French Antarctic station using daily participant observation (for uses of places) and a repeated measure of the perception and evaluation of the settings. The uses of places varied according to occupational and age subgroups: The young scientists expressed a higher need for privacy and a strong investment in their working areas, whereas the technicians preferred the social leisure area (main hall). These places were used as different behavior settings and thus corresponded to flexible environments. Flexibility was a characteristic of all the preferred places. A change…

Astrobiology of life on Earth

2021

Astrobiology is mistakenly regarded by some as a field confined to studies of life beyond Earth. Here, we consider life on Earth through an astrobiological lens. Whereas classical studies of microbiology historically focused on various anthropocentric sub-fields (such as fermented foods or commensals and pathogens of crop plants, livestock and humans), addressing key biological questions via astrobiological approaches can further our understanding of all life on Earth. We highlight potential implications of this approach through the articles in this Environmental Microbiology special issue ‘Ecophysiology of Extremophiles’. They report on the microbiology of places/processes including low-te…

Treball social i habitatge social: binomi i oportunitat

2013

This article demonstrates through professional practice the necessary links that must exist between social work intervention and the state-subsidized housing assigned for the underprivileged population. To demonstrate this link, the results of good practices executed (mainly those in which a community vision with specific interventions have been incorporated) are shown from the historical perspective. To conclude, viable proposals are given from the local point of view.

Ripensare i territori interni a partire dai nuclei storici minori. Uno sguardo all’Area Interna dei Nebrodi

2019

Within the framework of local development in Inner Areas in Italy, the paper focuses on the potential of historical centers as territorial capital of exceptional value that, among other resources of these territories, are largely unused, suffering an identity crisis and powerless assist processes of depopulation and economic and social decline. In these contexts, heritage can take a decisive role in self-sustainable local development, able to enhance underutilized components for new inhabitants and new lifestyles, without neglecting a factor of great importance, that is the quality of life that these places offer, far above the average of urban areas. The contribution proposes an initial sc…
