Climbing into the past—first Himalayan mummies discovered in Nepal

2003

In a cave system in Mebrak (Mustang District, Western Nepal), a team of archaeologists investigating extensive abandoned settlements in the high Himalayas made an extraordinary discovery in 1995. One of the caves had been used as a community burial chamber from ca. 400 BC to 50 AD. Inside, approximately 30 naturally mummified bodies rested in bed-like wooden coffins exhibiting ornamental carving and elaborate painting. The dead had been furnished with a rich store of grave goods consisting of both personal ornaments and objects of daily life as well as the remains of domestic animals. Due to the favourable climatic conditions, all of the artefacts, which also include fur and textile garment…

The working partner in family enterprise : European and national issues

2021

The essay focuses on the discipline of the work done by one partner in the company of the other in cross-border couples and on the problems involved in this case. More specifically the focus is on the hermeneutical problems that arise both at the level of European legislation and at the level of Italian national discipline which is applicable according to European conflict criteria, showing the ambiguities and wide areas of shadow left uncovered by the latter.

From sin to the civil order, unions outside of marriage under the law (XVI-XX century)

2011

The aim of this thesis is to understand the legal status of unmarried couples, over a period of time extending for nearly five centuries. The canon law of marriage relegated cohabitation to a permanent state of sin, and in the sixteenth century, the council of Trent prescribed severe penalties to punish cohabitation. The fathers of the council enacted rules governing the celebration of marriage. Secular authority then gradually arrogated jurisdiction in matrimonial matters by means of laws and jurisprudence. The line between marriage and cohabitation was now strictly drawn. Although the old law did not consider cohabitation as a crime, it castigated children born outside of wedlock by subje…

La tutela del convivente non intestatario con riguardo agli apporti conferiti per l’acquisto della casa familiare. Confronti comparatistici.

2013

The essay deals with the financial consequences of the breakdown in relationships between cohabitants through the use of the comparative method applied to English and Italian legal systems. In particular, it explores the case in which the property of family home is conveyed into the sole name of one party, while the other party contributed directly (e.g. through financial contributions to mortgage payments) or indirectly (e.g. payments of the domestic bills) to the payment of the purchase price. Under Italian law, the remedy available for the non-owner cohabitant is identified with unjust enrichment, but it will be accessible only when that contributions to the acquisition of property lacks…

Muslim Atmospheres as Neighbourhoods of Religious Diasporic Microspheres

2016

In many countries around the globe, Muslims not only form a statistical religious minority, but also are mainly regarded as a homogeneous group by the average citizen, the press and politicians. Concepts of Muslim diaspora seem to frequently reinforce this idea, implying that Muslims are building a global community endangering supposedly peaceful cohabitation within nation-states. In contrast, this article, based on a case study in Argentina, shows that diasporic communities can be fruitfully conceptualised as socio-cultural orders with a special ‘atmosphere’, which is formed by the emotional connections between group members and their surroundings, which transcend borders of nation-states.…
