Apical periodontitis and glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients : cross-sectional study

Background The objective of this study was to analyze the possible relationship between the glycemic control and the prevalence of apical periodontitis in type 2 diabetic patients. The null hypothesis was that apical periodontitis is not associated with glycemic control. Material and Methods In a cross-sectional design, the radiographic records of 216 type 2 diabetic patients (65.0 ± 10.7 years), 117 men (54.2%) and women (45.8%), were examined. The accurate estimation of the transport function of human blood for respiratory gases as well as the respiratory gas exchange in human body requires detailed knowledge of the respiratory gas partial pressures and the acid-base status in the blood. Because there is an interdependence between the different respiratory gas parameters described as Bohr and Haldane effect (3,4), it is possible to obtain a general picture of the whole transport system, if these interrelations are known.

Enzyme polymorphisms and haemoglobin variants in Greeks

Several enzyme polymorphisms and hemoglobin variants were typed in a sample of n = 219 non-related Greek blood-donors. The following gene frequencies were observed: pa = 0.201, pb = 0.701, pc = 0.098;PGDA = 0.985, PGDc = 0.015; AK1 = 0.942, AK2 = 0.058; HbA = 0.988, HbS = 0.012. No polymorphic variation was seen in LDH, s-MDH, PHI, or SOD. The population genetical aspects of these results are discussed.

Introduction: This study presents a 10-year longitudinal assessment of bone status in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Material and methods: Thirty-two patients (12 female, aged 20.5 ± 3.93 years, T1D duration 13.9 ± 1.97 years) were studied using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). SUMMARY 1. Albino Wistar rats were raised in a normobaric hypoxic environment (10% O2 in N2). Two generations of hypoxic rats were observed for changes in their haemoglobin-oxygen (Hb-O2) dissociation curves (ODC), 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG), haemoglobin (Hb), and Hill coefficients at P50 (n50). Observation of ventilation-induced Spo(2) oscillations in pigs: first step to noninvasive detection of cyclic recruitment of atelectasis?

High arterial partial oxygen pressure (Pao(2)) oscillations within the respiratory cycle were described recently in experimental acute lung injury. This phenomenon has been related to cyclic recruitment of atelectasis and varying pulmonary shunt fractions. Noninvasive detection of Spo(2) (oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry) as an indicator of cyclic collapse of atelectasis, instead of recording Pao(2) oscillations, could be of clinical interest in critical care.
