Probabilistic Evaluation of the Adaptation Time for Structures under Seismic Loads
2016
Abstract In this paper, a probabilistic approach for the evaluation of the adaptation time for elastic perfectly plastic frames is proposed. The considered load history acting on the structure is defined as a suitable combination of quasi-statical loads and seismic actions. The proposed approach utilizes the Monte Carlo method in order to generate a suitable large number of seismic acceleration histories and for each one the related load combination is defined. Furthermore, for each load combination the related adaptation time is determined, if any, as the optimal one for which the structure is able to shakedown under the unamplified applied actions. A known generalized Ceradini's theorem i…
Optimal design of steel frames accounting for buckling
2013
A formulation of a special design problem devoted to elastic perfectly plastic steel frame structures subjected to different combinations of static and dynamic loads is presented. In particular, a minimum volume design problem formulation is presented and the structure is designed to be able to elastically behave for the assigned fixed loads, to elastically shakedown in presence of serviceability load conditions and to prevent the instantaneous collapse for suitably chosen combinations of fixed and ultimate seismic loadings as well as of fixed and wind actions. The actions that the structure must suffer are evaluated by making reference to the actual Italian seismic code. The dynamic respon…
Vibration Monitoring of the Mechanical Harvesting of Citrus to Improve Fruit Detachment Efficiency
2019
The introduction of a mechanical harvesting process for oranges can contribute to enhancing farm profitability and reducing labour dependency. The objective of this work is to determine the spread of the vibration in citrus tree canopies to establish recommendations to reach high values of fruit detachment efficiency and eliminate the need for subsequent hand-harvesting processes. Field tests were carried out with a lateral tractor-drawn canopy shaker on four commercial plots of sweet oranges. Canopy vibration during the harvesting process was measured with a set of triaxial accelerometer sensors with a datalogger placed on 90 bearing branches. Monitoring of the vibration process, fruit pro…

A SGBEM approach for static shakedown analysis as CQO problem
2011
In this paper the shakedown static approach was rephrased by using the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method (SGBEM) for multidomain type problems. The present formulation utilizes the self-equilibrium stress equation, connecting the stresses at the Gauss points of each substructure (bem-e) to plastic strains, through a stiffness matrix (self-stress matrix), involving all the bem-elements of the discretized system. The optimization problem was solved by Conic Quadratic Optimization (CQO) and implemented using the Karnak.sGbem code coupled with MatLab. In order to prove the efficency of the proposed strategy, some numerical tests, in which the shakedown multiplier was checked by SGBEM e…
Computational methods for optimal shakedown design of FE structures
1998
The paper concerns the optimal shakedown design of structures discretized by elastic perfectly plastic finite elements. The design problem is formulated in four alternative versions, i.e. as the search for the minimum volume design whose shakedown limit load multiplier is assigned or as the search for the maximum shakedown limit load multiplier design whose volume is assigned; both problems are approached on the grounds of the shakedown lower bound and upper bound theorems. Correspondingly four computational methods, one for each original problem, are presented. These methods consist in solving iteratively new problems which are simpler than the original ones, but expressed in such a way th…
Kibernoziegumi no kriminoloģijas skatpunkta
2017
Assessing the importance of nursery areas of European hake (Merluccius merluccius) using a body condition index
2017
Abstract In this study, we analysed the variability of reserve storage in juvenile European hake (Merluccius merluccius) off the western coasts of Italy (Central Mediterranean Sea). Reserve storage was measured by the hepatosomatic index (HSI), in relation to environmental and population covariates. HSI has been proved to be a consistent measure of energy storage in gadoids, thus reflecting quantity and quality of food availability for growth. Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) were used to model the effect of depth, bottom temperature, bottom currents, fish density and fish body size on HSI of juvenile European hake. The results revealed that reserve storage…
Seismic shakedown design of frames based on a probabilistic approach
2014
The present study concerns the optimal design of elastic perfectly plastic structures subjected to a combination of fixed and seismic loads. In particular, plane frames are considered and suitable measures of the beam element cross sections are chosen as design variables. The optimal design is required to behave in a purely elastic manner when subjected just to the fixed load and to have the capability to eventually shakedown when simultaneously subjected to fixed and seismic loads. Due to the natural uncertainness related to the definition of the seismic load history, a new probabilistic approach is proposed, consisting into two subsequent search steps. At first a suitably chosen large num…
