CArDIS : A Swedish Historical Handwritten Character and Word Dataset

This paper introduces a new publicly available image-based Swedish historical handwritten character and word dataset named Character Arkiv Digital Sweden (CArDIS) (https://cardisdataset.github.io/CARDIS/). The samples in CArDIS are collected from 64, 084 Swedish historical documents written by several anonymous priests between 1800 and 1900. The dataset contains 116, 000 Swedish alphabet images in RGB color space with 29 classes, whereas the word dataset contains 30, 000 image samples of ten popular Swedish names as well as 1, 000 region names in Sweden. Furthermore, when compared with printed words, lexical effects (e.g., word-frequency effect) are magnified for less intelligible (difficult) handwriting (Barnhart and Goldinger, 2010; Perea et al., 2016). Sound-to-print consistency of picture labels was manipulated in five experiments to investigate whether phonological codes constrain the selection of orthographic codes in written picture naming. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants wrote down picture names which were inconsistent or consistent in the phono-orthographic mapping defined either at the level of the word unit, i.e., heterographic homophones versus nonhomophones (Experiment 1), or at the sublexical level (Experiment 2). Phonological awareness refers to the ability to perceive and manipulate the sound structure of language and is especially important when children learn to read. Poor phonological awareness is considered the major cause for the emergence of reading difficulties. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we examined the brain correlates of phonological processing in young beginning readers (aged 8.3+/-0.4 y, 2nd grade) with poor (25th percentile) or normal, age-appropriate reading skills (40th percentile) using a covert reading and mental letter substitution task. Do handwritten words magnify lexical effects in visual word recognition?

Previous research has revealed that the magnitude of lexical effects (e.g., the word-frequency effect) is greater with handwritten words than with printed words. Writing disorders are frequent and impairing. However, social robots may help to improve children's motivation and to propose enjoyable and tailored activities. Here, we have used the Co-writer scenario in which a child is asked to teach a robot how to write via demonstration on a tablet, combined with a series of games we developed to train specifically pressure, tilt, speed, and letter liaison controls. Integration of a structural features-based preclassifier and a man-machine interactive classifier for a fast multi-stroke character recognition

A transputer-based parallel machine for handwritten character recognition is proposed. An algorithm based on structural features and on a tree classifier was used to accomplish the pre-classification of the unknown sample in order to speed up the recognition process. The algorithm for the final classification is based on the description of the strokes through Fourier descriptors. The learning phase is accomplished through a man-machine interactive process.
