Risk Factors for Secondary Cancer in a Case-Control Study on 1,259 Patients with Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

2018

Abstract INTRODUCTION The incidence of secondary cancer (SC) in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) is high and comparable to that of thrombosis. However, the identification of patient subgroups that might be at increased susceptibility of developing SC has not been systematically addressed. We report here the results of an international case-control study (MPN-K) aimed at comparing the frequency of exposure to possible causes of SC in patients with classical MPN, polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET) and myelofibrosis (MF). METHODS This European Leukaemia Network (ELN) study reports MPN patients from 28 sites of 5 European countries and Israel, diagnosed in th…

Preliminary study of the neuromuscular activation during barefoot and shod running

2015

Epidemiology of pediatric tumors of the central nervous system.

2009

Tumors of the CNS are the second most frequent malignancy in childhood and the most common of the solid tumors. An increase in CNS tumor rates during the past decades has been observed in a number of countries. One possibility is that improvements in diagnostics of CNS tumors contributed to the increasing trend. Another concern is that changes in environmental exposures may be responsible for the increasing incidence rates and a number of epidemiologic studies investigated factors like exposure to ionizing radiation, electromagnetic fields, or pesticides. In addition, prenatal exposures, for example from maternal diet, or the role of infectious agents were of particular interest. In this re…

Regulation of Apoptosis in Endocrine Autoimmunity

2002

Dysregulation of apoptosis is associated with the pathogenesis of organ-specific autoimmune diseases, through altered target organ susceptibility. Apoptosis signaling pathways can be initiated through activation of death receptors such as Fas. A comparative analysis of the expression of Fas and FasL, the antiapoptotic molecule Bcl-2, and apoptosis in both thyrocytes and thyroid-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) from patients with either Graves' disease (GD) or Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) was performed. GD thyrocytes expressed less Fas than HT thyrocytes, whereas GD TILs had higher levels of Fas and FasL than HT TILs. GD thyrocytes expressed higher levels of Bcl-2 compared with HT thyrocytes.…

Clinical and Epidemiological Study on Patients with Mandibular Fractures within the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Compartment in the Sibiu County Cl…

2019

Abstract Traumatology from the oral and maxillofacial area represents a very important and frequent pathology within this specialty, the mandibular fractures occupying the first place in terms of location and frequency due to the anatomical prominent position of the mandible. The first three etiological factors are represented by aggressions, accidental falls and car accidents. This article, accomplished in collaboration with the statistical service of the Sibiu County Clinical Emergency Hospital, aims at analysing the distribution by sex, origin environments, levels of studies, presentation of patients, analysis which was broken down by days of the week, frequent symptoms of these types of…

Breakthrough Cancer Pain: Ten Commandments

2016

The term "breakthrough cancer pain" (BTcP) was introduced about 25 years ago. Peaks of pain intensity reported in patients with cancer had been invariably examined in the past years, providing relevant information for a better knowledge of this phenomenon and its treatment. The aim of this critical review was to provide the golden rules, namely, the 10 commandments, for a correct diagnostic pathway of BTcP and a consequent personalized pharmacological treatment. These are as follows: 1) assessment of background analgesia, 2) drugs used for background analgesia, 3) BTcP is a frequent phenomenon, 4) characteristics of BTcP, 5) diagnosis of BTcP, 6) continuous assessment, 7) tailored pharmacol…

Haemoperfusion: a useful therapy for a severely poisoned patient?

1986

Although it is many years since a haemodialysis and haemoperfusion over uncoated and later coated charcoal columns have been used for the treatment of intoxicated patients, the clinical efficacy of these extracorporeal techniques in the treatment of severely poisoned patients remains a matter of debate. Some of the reasons for this controversy may be the indiscriminate use of haemoperfusion in any form of intoxication, the lack of well-controlled studies and the wrong interpretation of the high haemoperfusion clearance values sometimes obtained. Simple pharmacokinetic principles are applied to this type of treatment and some practical guidelines as to how and when haemoperfusion should be …

Evaluation of early and late histamine release by three standard volume substitutes

2001

Following meta-analysis [1], the use of colloidal solutions in intensive care medicine is under discussion. Although polygeline [2] and human albumin are known to cause histamine release, other substances eg hydroxyethyl starch were thought to be without effect. Histamine release depends on the clinical scenario, concomitant drugs, infusion speed, duration and amount of infusion. However, there is no information about their effect regarding time periods longer than immediate reactions. This study investigated the histamine releasing effects of three plasma substitutes administered and observed over a longer period of time, simulating many of the clinical scenarios.

AB0996 Rheumathologic Diseases in Adolescence: Psychological Profile of a Difficult Age

2015

Background Chronic disease significantly interfere with the quality of life at every age, expecially in a period of life characterized by the need to assume a role in the society and the research of a specific identity. The personal image is often destroyed by the disease, the long term sequelae of pharmacological treatment. Adolescents are frequently obligated to quit many possibilities of experience with peers. Objectives We realized a plurispecialistic approach to adolescents with rheumatologic diseases, with the figures of neuropsychiatric, psychologists, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, to give an answer to the complex requests of these patients. Methods We evaluated 20 patients with…
