High-order harmonic generation in fullerenes using few- and multi-cycle pulses of different wavelengths

2012

We present the results of experimental and theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in plasmas containing fullerenes using pulses of different duration and wavelength. We find that the harmonic cutoff is extended in the case of few-cycle pulses (3.5 fs, 29th harmonic) compared to longer laser pulses (40 fs, 25th harmonic) at the same intensity. Our studies also include HHG in fullerenes using 1300 and 780 nm multicycle (35 and 40 fs) pulses. For 1300 nm pulses, an extension of the harmonic cutoff to the 41st order was obtained, with a decrease in conversion efficiency that is consistent with theoretical predictions based on wave packet spreading for single atoms. Theoreti…

Random quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation in periodically poled lithium tantalate

2010

We observe second harmonic generation via random quasi-phase-matching in a 2.0 micron periodically poled, 1-cm-long, z-cut lithium tantalate. Away from resonance, the harmonic output profiles exhibit a characteristic pattern stemming from a stochastic domain distribution and a quadratic growth with the fundamental excitation, as well as a broadband spectral response. The results are in good agreement with a simple model and numerical simulations in the undepleted regime, assuming an anisotropic spread of the random nonlinear component. Dynamical effects and Terahertz harmonic generation in low-doped bulk semiconductors and submicron structures

2006

We present results obtained using a three-dimensional multivalleys Monte Carlo (MC) model to simulate the nonlinear carrier dynamics under the influence of an intense sub-terahertz electric field in a doped bulk semiconductor. By self-consistently coupling a one-dimensional Poisson solver to the ensemble MC code we simulate also the nonlinear carrier dynamics in n+nn+ structures operating under large-amplitude periodic signals and investigate the voltage-current characteristic hysteresis cycle and the high-order harmonic efficiency. For both cases we discuss the dependence of the nonlinearities and of the harmonic generation efficiency on the frequency and the intensity of the alternating s…

Gouy wave modes: undistorted pulse focalization in a dispersive medium.

2007

Gouy wave modes are linear waves with finite energy that propagate without distortion at any phase and group velocity through a focal region in a dispersive medium. These features make them potentially useful for the onset and control of nonlinear interactions.

Second harmonic generation by an isolated spin

1970

Abstract The second harmonic generation at microwave frequency by a spin S = 1 2 in a cavity has been studied as a function of the external magnetic field using a resolvent technique, and the average transition rates to states with an increased number of double-frequency photons has been calculated. In spite of the crudeness of the model, a good qualitative agreement has been found between the predictions of the present theory and recent experimental results on non-linear behaviour of paramagnetic spin systems in a microwave field.

Observation of two-XUV-photon ionization using harmonic generation from a short, intense laser pulse

1996

We report the observation of a two-photon ionization process in the XUV wavelength regime. In a near-resonant 1 + 1 ionization scheme, Ar atoms are ionized absorbing the 15 eV third harmonic photons produced in a gas jet by the 0.5 ps intense laser pulses of a KrF excimer laser emitting at 248.6 nm. The present demonstration of a non-linear process in the XUV regime reveals feasibility of high-intensity applications utilizing the uniquely high peak power of non-conventional short wavelength radiation sources based on harmonic generation.

Harmonic Generation and Nonlinear Propagation: When Secondary Radiations Have Primary Consequences

2014

In this Letter, it is experimentally and theoretically shown that weak odd harmonics generated during the propagation of an infrared ultrashort ultraintense pulse unexpectedly modify the nonlinear properties of the medium and lead to a strong modification of the propagation dynamics. This result is in contrast with all current state-of-the-art propagation model predictions, in which secondary radiations, such as third harmonic, are expected to have a negligible action upon the fundamental pulse propagation. By analyzing full three-dimensional ab initio quantum calculations describing the microscopic atomic optical response, we have identified a fundamental mechanism resulting from interfere…
