Effect of surround WP (a Kaolin-based particle film) on Ceratitis capitata infestation, quality and postharvest behavior of cactus pear fruit cv Gial…

2021

ABSTRACT A Kaolin-particle film (Surround WP) was applied at 3% to cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica cv Gialla) to assess its capacity to Control medfly (Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann) infestation and to evaluate its effects on the quality and postharvest behavior of treated fruit. In the first trial, Kaolin was applied at the end of July when fruit were green and about two weeks later, at color breakage. Its efficacy was compared with a standard organophosphate insecticide (Phosmet). The experiment was conducted in two locations in 2014 and 2015. Kaolin application was very effective in preventing medfly attacks until natural fruit drop in November. Kaolin treated fruit were harvested at th…

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine at the forefront battle against COVID-19: Clinical experience and scientific basis.

2020

Abstract Background Throughout the 5000-year history of China, more than 300 epidemics were recorded. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used effectively to combat each of these epidemics’ infections, and saved many lives. To date, there are hundreds of herbal TCM formulae developed for the purpose of prevention and treatment during epidemic infections. When COVID-19 ravaged the Wuhan district in China in early January 2020, without a deep understanding about the nature of COVID-19, patients admitted to the TCM Hospital in Wuhan were immediately treated with TCM and reported later with >90% efficacy. Approach We conducted conduct a systematic survey of various TCM herbal pre…

Filter paper disk techniques for assay of nucleotidase

1977

A DE filter disk technique for assaying the activity of nucleotidase is described. This method is based on the observation that nucleotides bind to the filters at 5 mM Tris-HCl (pH 7.8) while nucleosides do not. As parameter for the nucleotidase activity the decrease of bound nucleotides is determined. In parallel experiments the amount of the product (nucleoside) formed can be measured by DEAE Sephadex column chromatography. The filter disk technique can be applied for the determination of vmax and Km of a nucleotidase by using different ribonucleosidase monophosphate substrates.

Effect of pulp and paper mill effluent (BKME) on physiological parameters of roach (Rutilus rutilus) infected by the digenean Rhipidocotyle fennica.

2002

Physiological parameters were measured after experimental infection of roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) with Rhipidocotyle fennica Gibson, Valtonen et Taskinen, 1992 (Digenea) cercariae. The fish were caught from two lakes: a eutrophic bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME)-contaminated lake and an oligotrophic unpolluted lake. The intensity of infection was followed up to 10 days post infection (p.i.) and physiological parameters indicating non-specific stress responses and the condition of fish were examined simultaneously. The mean abundance, the number of parasites per fish, of R. fennica was significantly higher in the fish from the contaminated water during the first two days p.i., probably re…

Expression of a vegetative-storage-protein gene from Arabidopsis is regulated by copper, senescence and ozone

2001

Emerging data suggest that the mechanisms regulating plant copper homeostasis could be implicated in stress and senescence signal transduction pathways. To gain insight into copper-modulated patterns of gene expression, copper-treated Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. plants were analysed by mRNA differential display. The experimental conditions were selected using aggregation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) as a molecular sensor to monitor copper-induced oxidative stress. Two copper-induced messengers encoding a vegetative storage protein (VSP2) were isolated by this technique. Both clones differed in the length of their 3'-untranslated region according to the p…

Tertiary hyperparathyroidism: a review

2021

Abstract: Tertiary hyperparathyroidism (HPT III) occurs when an excess of parathyroid hormone (PTH) is secreted by parathyroid glands, usually after longstanding secondary hyperparathyroidism. Some authorities reserve the term for secondary hyperparathyroidism that persists after successful renal transplantation. Long-standing chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with several metabolic disturbances that lead to increased secretion of PTH, including hyperphosphatemia, calcit-riol deficiency, and hypocalcaemia. Hyperphosphatemia has a direct stimulatory effect on the parathyroid gland cell resulting in nodular hyperplasia and increased PTH secretion. Prolonged hypocalcaemia also causes …

Hypothesis: can N-acetylcysteine be beneficial in Parkinson's disease?

1999

Based on the finding of decreased mitochondrial complex I activity in the substantia nigra of patients with Parkinson's disease, we propose that the consequent reduction of ATP synthesis and increased generation of reactive oxygen species may be a possible cause of nigrostriatal cell death. Since sulfhydryl groups are essential in oxidative phosphorylation, thiolic antioxidants may contribute to the preservation of these proteins against oxidative damage. In the present paper, we hypothesize that treatment with a sulfur-containing antioxidant such as N-acetylcysteine may provide a new neuroprotective therapeutic strategy for Parkinson's disease.

Postsynaptic NO/cGMP Increases NMDA Receptor Currents via Hyperpolarization-Activated Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Channels in the Hippocampus

2013

The nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) signaling cascade participates in the modulation of synaptic transmission. The effects of NO are mediated by the NO-sensitive cGMP-forming guanylyl cyclases (NO-GCs), which exist in 2 isoforms with indistinguishable regulatory properties. The lack of long-term potentiation (LTP) in knock-out (KO) mice deficient in either one of the NO-GC isoforms indicates the contribution of both NO-GCs to LTP. Recently, we showed that the NO-GC1 isoform is located presynaptically in glutamatergic neurons and increases the glutamate release via hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide (HCN)-gated channels in the hippocampus. Electrophysiologi…

Expression of Transketolase-like 1 and Activation of Akt in Grade IV Glioblastomas Compared With Grades II and III Astrocytic Gliomas

2008

Transketolases link the Embden-Meyerhof pathway to the pentose phosphate pathway. An influence of p-Akt on this metabolism was described. This study was performed to compare the expression of transketolase-like 1 (TKTL1) and p-Akt in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and other astrocytic gliomas (AGs, grades II and III). We analyzed 15 GBMs, 15 AGs (grade II), and 3 normal brain samples for TKTL1 expression by semiquantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting and 23 GBMs, 9 grade III AGs, and 7 grade II AGs immunohistochemically (TKTL1 and p-Akt). On the protein level, TKTL1 was significantly overexpressed in tumors. Immunohistochemically, the tumor grade sig…

Mapping and quantification of biomolecules in tumor biopsies using bioluminescence

1996

Quantitative bioluminescence and single-photon imaging have been applied for mapping concentration distributions of metabolites, such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP), glucose and lactate, in biopsies of cervical cancers in patients. Biopsies were taken before a conventional radiation treatment, and a number of clinically relevant data, such as local tumor control, patient survival, metastatic spread and so forth, were documented. There was no correlation between staging or grading and any of the metabolic parameters measured. Local correlations between ATP, glucose and lactate on a pixel-to-pixel basis were generally positive, with respective Spearman's correlation coefficients less in pati…
