This study focuses on the entrepreneurial longevity of a family business by observing an old sawmill. The activities within the firm are influenced by the change in the Finnish Society during the 20th century and the decline of the village community. The challenge for surviving at the periphery and maintaining operations in a single family over generations is cultural knowledge. Ethnographic approach through thick descriptions provides a chance to follow the change in everyday customs and interpret its meanings, and these are evaluated using critical methodology. P-C Cross-Coupling Onto Enamides: Versatile Synthesis of α-Enamido Phosphane Derivatives

We report herein the Pd-catalyzed P–C cross-coupling reac- tion between enol phosphates and secondary phosphane–bor- ane complexes or phosphane oxides. The reaction was per- formed under mild conditions, owing to Pd activation of the P–H bonds of the phosphane–boranes (or phosphane oxides) and to the powerful enol phosphate coupling reagents. New useful chiral and achiral α - β -alkenylphosphane derivatives bearing an amido group in the α -position to the P center were obtained in yields up to 70 %.

Guano-related phosphate-rich minerals in European caves

International audience; Guano is a typical deposit found in caves derived from the excretions of bats and in minor cases of birds. These organic deposits decompose and form a series of acid fluids and gases that can interact with the minerals, sediments, and rocks present in the cave. Over sixty phosphates are known and described from caves, but guano decay also often leads to the formation of nitrates and sulfates. In this study twenty-two European caves were investigated for their guano-related secondary minerals. The oxonitridophosphate SrP(3)N(5)O has been synthesized by heating a multicomponent reactant mixture that consisted of phosphoryl triamide OP(NH(2))(3), thiophosphoryl triamide SP(NH(2))(3), SrS, and NH(4)Cl enclosed in evacuated and sealed silica-glass ampoules up to 750 °C. The compound was obtained as nanocrystalline powder with needle-shaped crystallites. The crystal structure was solved ab initio on the basis of electron diffraction data by means of automated electron diffraction tomography (ADT) and verified by Rietveld refinement with X-ray powder diffraction data. High concentrations of dissolved silica in the acid leachate impose two major challenges on precipitation based recovery of phosphorus (P). Firstly, co-precipitation of colloidal silica in the acidic regimes decreases the purity and value of precipitated P-products. In addition, silica scaling on internal surfaces of equipment is also a problematic issue in industrial operations. Facile and efficient chemical functionalization of aliphatic polyesters by cross metathesis

International audience; An effective preparation of new tailor-made macromolecular materials via a combination of two (atom-efficient) catalytic transformations is reported. First, new aliphatic polyesters with alternated composition have been prepared using a salen aluminum catalyst system. Next, the pendant vinyl moieties in those copolymers have been selectively transformed into various functional groups by metathesis in the presence of homogeneous Grubbs catalysts.
