50 mJ/30 ns FTIR Q-switched diode-pumped Er:Yb:glass 1.54 μm laser

Abstract 50 mJ Q-switched output at 30 ns pulse duration was demonstrated with a transversely diode-pumped bulk Er 3+ :Yb 3+ :glass 1.54 μm laser system of uncomplicated and compact design, using a piezoelectrically driven FTIR shutter. In long-pulse operation, 360 mJ output was obtained for 2.65 J incident optical pump energy. Maximum optical slope efficiencies of 20.5% and 5.4% were measured in long-pulse and Q-switched operation, respectively. Optimum Q-switch timing was studied taking into account the Yb 3+ →Er 3+ energy transfer process and was correlated with free-running delay parameters.

Biomimetic transformation of polyphosphate microparticles during restoration of damaged teeth.

Abstract Objective In the present study, we investigated the fusion process between amorphous microparticles of the calcium salt of the physiological polymer comprising orthophosphate units, of inorganic polyphosphate (polyP), and enamel. Methods This polymer was incorporated as an ingredient into toothpaste and the fusion process was studied by electron microscopy and by synchrotron-based X-ray tomography microscopy (SRXTM) techniques. Low Temperature Afterglow from SrAl <sub>2</sub>O <sub>4</sub>: EU, Dy, B Containing Glass

SrAl2O4: Eu, Dy, B particles were added in a phosphate glass (90NaPO3-10NaF (in mol%)) using the direct doping method. For the first time, the composition of the particles prior to and after embedding them in the glass was analysed using EPMA analysis. Boron was found to be incorporated in already distorted surroundings creating new trapping centers in the particles which are thought to be favourable for the tunnelling process and so for the afterglow at 10K. Despite the partial decomposition of the particles, the glass exhibit afterglow at low temperature confirming to be promising materials for low temperature applications.

Cytochalasin B selectively releases ovalbumin mRNA precursors but not the mature ovalbumin mRNA from hen oviduct nuclear matrix

Hen oviduct nuclear matrix-bound mature ovalbumin mRNA is released from the matrix in the presence of ATP, while the ovalbumin mRNA precursors remain bound to this structure. Detachment of the mature mRNA from the matrix by ATP as well as ATP-dependent efflux of mRNA from isolated nuclei were found to be inhibited by cytochalasin B. On the other hand, in the absence of ATP, cytochalasin B exclusively caused the release (and nucleocytoplasmic efflux) of the ovalbumin messenger precursors, but not of the mature mRNA. Abstract A composite membrane containing 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonic acid sodium salt (NQS) embedded in an ionic liquid (IL)- polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)- tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)- SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) polymeric matrix is proposed. AbstractPast fish provenance, exploitation and trade patterns were studied by analyzing phosphate oxygen isotope compositions (δ18OPO4) of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) tooth enameloid from archaeological sites across the southern Levant, spanning the entire Holocene. We report the earliest evidence for extensive fish exploitation from the hypersaline Bardawil lagoon on Egypt’s northern Sinai coast, as indicated by distinctively high δ18OPO4 values, which became abundant in the southern Levant, both along the coast and further inland, at least from the Late Bronze Age (3,550–3,200 BP).
