Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of intermittent treatment of parathyroid hormone (PTH (1-34)) on the bone regeneration of critically-sized rat calvarial bone defects. Material and Methods: Thirty-two male rats were trephined (4mm fullthickness diameter), in the central part of the parietal bones and divided into 2 groups of 16. The PTH group received subcutaneous injections of PTH (1-34) at 40μg/kg, 3 times a week and the control (CTL) group received the vehicle in the same regimen. Effects of systemically transplanted allogeneic bone marrow multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells on rats' recovery after experimental polytrauma.

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate impact of transplantation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM MMSCs) on recovery after polytrauma and bone fracture repair. Methods A total 27 Wistar-Kyoto rats were divided into three groups (n = 9): normal control (A), polytrauma (B), and polytrauma treated with BM MMSC transplantation (C). The experimental polytrauma model was made on male rats by causing multiple fractures and hemorrhagic shock. Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize factors associated with closure of venous leg ulcers (VLUs) in a pooled analysis of subjects from three randomized clinical trials. Methods: Closure of VLUs after treatment with HP802-247, an allogeneic living cell therapy consisting of growth-arrested human keratinocytes and fibroblasts, vs standard therapy with compression bandaging was evaluated in three phase 3 clinical trials of similar design. Endoscopic enhancement of the healing of high-risk colon anastomoses by low-power helium-neon laser. An experimental study.

Recent studies suggest that helium-neon (He-Ne) lasers at low energy can enhance wound healing in intestinal anastomoses. In this experimental study, we tested the strength and collagen concentration of high-risk anastomoses of the rat colon after endoscopic irradiation by helium-neon laser. Our results show that repeated helium-neon laser irradiation (1.9 J/cm 2)increases the bursting strength of the anastomoses by almost 100% on the fourth postoperative day. This effect is not observed by increasing the radiation dose (6.4 J/cm 2).Differences in collagen (hydroxyproline) concentration did not reach statistical significance.

Humeral nailing revisited.

Unreamed interlocked humeral nailing for stabilisation of acute humeral fractures was introduced a decade ago. Antegrade and retrograde nail insertion are equally popular. The role of nailing as opposed to plating of humeral fractures is the subject of continuous debate. Between 1997 and 2005, 99 acute fractures of the humeral shaft were treated operatively with the unreamed humeral nail (UHN, Synthes) in our Level I Trauma Centre. The mean age of the patients was 63 years. Only eight patients (8.1%) were polytraumatised, nine patients had an open fracture (9.1%), five had a primary radial nerve palsy (5.1%). Orthopedic versus surgical treatment of Gartland type II supracondylar humerus fracture in children.

The choice of orthopedic or surgical treatment for Gartland type II supracondylar humeral fractures remains controversial. The aim of this study was to retrospectively compare the outcomes in orthopedic and surgical treatment in type II supracondylar humeral fractures in children treated in the Orthopedic and Traumatology Children Unit of our tertiary hospital over the period between 2007 and 2010. This study suggests that orthopedic treatment is a valid option for the treatment of this type of fractures, with radiological and functional results as good as those obtained with surgical treatment, avoiding surgical complications and decreasing the hospital stay.

Inhomogeneity of collagen organization within the fibrotic scar after myocardial infarction: results in a swine model and in human samples.

We aimed to characterize the organization of collagen within a fibrotic scar in swine and human samples from patients with chronic infarctions. Swine were subjected to occlusion of the left anterior descending artery followed by reperfusion 1 week (acute myocardial infarction group) or 1 month (chronic myocardial infarction group) after infarction. The organization of the collagen fibers (Fast Fourier Transform of samples after picrosirius staining; higher values indicate more disorganization) was studied in 100 swine and 95 human samples. Objectives: To evaluate initial inflammatory response of skeletal muscle to a few commonly used suture materials for muscle repair namely nylon, polydiaxonone (PDS II), plain catgut and polygalactin 910 which in turn determines the scarring of muscle and loss of function. Material and Methods: Inflammation and healing of muscle post repair was evaluated in the lateral thigh muscle (biceps femoris) of 8 adult healthy male Rattus norvegicus.
