Myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) relies on the ultrasound detection of microbubble contrast agents that are solely confined to the intravascular space, and are therefore useful in the evaluation of flow in the microvasculature. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in body tissues or fluids is extensively investigated in clinical medicine and other research fields. In this article we provide a direct quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) as a sensitive tool for the measurement of cfDNA from plasma without previous DNA extraction, which is known to be accompanied by a reduction of DNA yield. Abstract We report on the evaluation of the second-generation assay for cardiac troponin T (cTnT) on the Enzymun®system. This new assay is completely specific for the cardiac isoform of TnT, utilizing two cardiospecific monoclonal antibodies. The assay time is reduced to 45 min. The interassay precision shows a median CV of 5.5%; 20% interassay CV was found between 0.05 and 0.1 μg/L. The cardiosensitivity of the second-generation cTnT assay in patients with ischemic myocardial injury appears equivalent when compared with the first-generation assay. This chapter reviews the importance of diabetes as a major complication of obesity, starting with examining the epidemiological relationship between diabetes and obesity. It is clear from the epidemiological data reported that obesity is strongly associated with onset and, in particular, the premature onset, of type 2 diabetes.
