Finite element analysis of the out-of-plane behavior of FRP strengthened masonry panels

Abstract In the present study a numerical model is proposed for the response of out-of-plane loaded calcarenite masonry walls strengthened with vertical CFRP strips applied on the substrate by means of epoxy resin. A simplified structural scheme is considered consisting in a beam fixed at one end, subjected to constant axial load and out-of-plane lateral force monotonically increasing. Multiwall carbon-nanotube interconnects: radial effects on physical models and resistance calculations for various metal substrates

Based on a model with singular attractive potential of equidistant conductive cylinders, we illustrate an approach to calculate the electron spectrum of metallic multiwall carbon nanotubes (MW CNT) with an arbitrary number of coaxial layers. We compute the number of electrically active channels, N ch , in the ideal case when all MW CNT shells are contacted to the electrodes, starting from the one-electron spectrum. The dependence of N ch on the temperature and on both the innermost and outermost shells radii allows us to discuss the potential performances of MW CNT interconnects, affecting the power dissipation of integrated circuits. Mechanical behavior of a sandwich with corrugated GRP core: numerical modeling and experimental validation

In this work the mechanical behaviour of a core reinforced composite sandwich structure is studied. The sandwich employs a Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) orthotropic material for both the two external skins and the inner core web. In particular, the core is designed in order to cooperate with the GRP skins in membrane and flexural properties by means of the addition of a corrugated laminate into the foam core. Structure of the FeBTC Metal–Organic Framework: A Model Based on the Local Environment Study

The local environment of iron in FeBTC, a metal organic framework commercially known as Basolite F300, is investigated combining XANES and EXAFS studies of the iron K-edge. The building block of the FeBTC can be described as an iron acetate moiety. Dehydration induces a change in the coordination of the first shell while preserving the network. We propose that the local structure around Fe atoms does not undergo a rearrangement, thus, leading to the formation of an open site. The analysis conveys that the FeBTC is a disordered network of locally ordered blocks.

Intricate biomineralization processes in molluscs engineer hierarchical structures with meso-, nano-, and atomic architectures that give the final composite material exceptional mechanical strength and optical iridescence on the macroscale. This multiscale biological assembly inspires new synthetic routes to complex materials. Our investigation of the prism-nacre interface reveals nanoscale details governing the onset of nacre formation using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. A critical approach to the toxic metal ion removal by hazelnut and almond shells

The adsorption capacity of ground hazelnut (HS) and almond (AS) shells towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) has been studied at pH = 5, in NaNO3 and NaCl ionic media, in the ionic strength range 0.05-0.5 mol L-1. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out by using the Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry technique to check the amount of the metal ion removed by HS and AS materials. Nuclear shell model applied to metallic clusters

We apply the nuclear shell model to jellium clusters of up to twenty-one Na atoms. Binding energies, ionization potentials, and photoabsorption cross sections are calculated and compared with mean-field results.

Raman and IR investigation of silica nanoparticles structure

Abstract In the present investigation we report experimental data regarding the Raman and Infra-Red (IR) absorption activities of commercial silica nanoparticles. We compared the data of the nanoparticles with the ones acquired in the same experimental conditions for commercial bulk silica. By this comparison we highlighted that the variability of the spectral features of the matrix related Raman and IR bands in the nanoparticles is above the one observed for the bulk systems before any treatments.
