Impact of Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Spectrum of Current Achalasia Treatment Options

2011

Minimally invasive Heller myotomy has evolved the “gold standard” procedure for achalasia in the spectrum of current treatment options. The laparoscopic technique has proved superior to the thoracoscopic approach due to improved visualization of the esophagogastric junction. Operative controversies most recently include the length of the myotomy, especially of its fundic part, with respect to the balance between postoperative persistent dysphagia and development of gastroesophageal reflux, as well as the type of the added antireflux procedure. Perioperative mortality should approach 0%, and favorable long-term results can be achieved in > 90%.

Costanti e metamorfosi di un mito. Beatrice Cenci nell'Ottocento, da Shelley a Guerrazzi e oltre.

2011

The essay deals with the transformation of Beatrice Cenci’ story in a literary myth, with special reference to its impact on the romantic sensitivity, on the collective imagination of Italian Risorgimento, and in the works by Shelley, Stendhal, Dumas and Guerrazzi,

Collectivity along N=50: Nuclear Structure studies on the neutron-magic nuclei 92Mo and 94Ru with AGATA and VAMOS++

2019

Mass measurements towards doubly magic Ni-78 : Hydrodynamics versus nuclear mass contribution in core-collapse supernovae

2022

International audience; We report the first high-precision mass measurements of the neutron-rich nuclei 74,75Ni and the clearly identified ground state of 76Cu, along with a more precise mass-excess value of 78Cu, performed with the double Penning trap JYFLTRAP at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. These new results lead to a quantitative estimation of the quenching for the N=50 neutron shell gap. The impact of this shell quenching on core-collapse supernova dynamics is specifically tested using a dedicated statistical equilibrium approach that allows a variation of the mass model independent of the other microphysical inputs. We conclude that the impact of nuclear m…

High-resolution records of growth temperature and life history of two Nacella limpet species, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

2020

Stable isotope ratios in patelloid limpets of the genus Patella have been established as proxies for coastal environmental change at sub-monthly resolution along the eastern North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. Nacella deaurata (Gmelin, 1791) and N. magellanica (Gmelin, 1791) are common intertidal species of patelloid limpets inhabiting the coast of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina/Chile and are commonly found in Holocene archaeological deposits. Here, we examine oxygen and carbon isotope ratios (δ18Oshell and δ13Cshell, respectively) of modern specimens of N. deaurata and N. magellanica to test the hypotheses that: 1) they form their shells in isotopic equilibrium with ambient water; and 2) pr…

Nanostructure, composition and mechanisms of bivalve shell growth

2008

Abstract Freshwater and marine cultured pearls form via identical processes to the shells of bivalves and can therefore serve as models for the biomineralization of bivalve shells in general. Their nanostructure consists of membrane-coated granules (vesicles) which contain amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) at the beginning of the biomineralization sequence, preceding the crystallization of aragonite and vaterite. In contrast to the commonly accepted view, crystallization of ACC occurs rapidly and within the granular nano-compartments mediated by organic molecules much earlier than platelet formation. The interlamellar organic sheets in nacre that form the platelet structure of nacre themsel…

Cluster Origin of Solvation Features of C-Nanostructures in Organic Solvents

2016

The existence of fullerenes, Single-Wall Carbon Nanocones (SWNCs), especially Nanohorns (SWNHs), Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube (SWNT) (CNT) (NT), NT-Fullerene Bud (NT-BUD), Nanographene (GR) and GR-Fullerene Bud (GR-BUD) in cluster form is discussed in organic solvents. Theories are developed based on columnlet, bundlet and droplet models describing size-distribution functions. The phenomena present a unified explanation in the columnlet model in which free energy of cluster-involved GR comes from its volume, proportional to number of molecules n in cluster. Columnlet model enables describing distribution function of GR stacks by size. From geometrical considerations, columnlet (GR/GR-BUD), b…

The Logic of User Interface Design

2016

Technical artefacts exist so that people can use them to make something happen. Their capacity to do so depends on the functions and functionalities of the technology, which requires users. Technologies thus have to give users the ability to control them, and the designer’s role is to create the actions and work processes for which the artefacts are intended. This basic HTI pursuit is called user interface design. It applies technical interaction concepts to solve design problems. This chapter presents the overall principles and goals for the user interface design of any technical artefact.

Precision mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei between N=50 and 82

2012

Our knowledge of binding energies of neutron-rich nuclei has experienced a major revision during the last five years due to the introduction of Penning-trap based mass measurements. New mass values for nearly 300 nuclides produced in fission with uncertainties of 10 keV or less have become available. The data produced at three Penning trap facilities at Jyvaskyla, CERN-ISOLDE and Argonne cover all isotopic chains from Ni to Pr, except iodine. In this talk some of this data is reviewed and applied using the mass differentials such as two-neutron binding energy and odd-even staggering to probe their sensitivity on changes in nuclear structure and on the strength of the N=82 shell gap and asso…
