Isomer Spectroscopy in90216Th126and the Magicity of92218U126
2001
Excited states in (216)Th were investigated via prompt and delayed gamma decays and the recoil-decay tagging method. The decay schemes of the I(pi) = (8+), t(1/2) = 128(8) micros, the I(pi) = (11-), t(1/2) = 615(55) ns, and the I(pi) = (14+), t(1/2) > or = 130 ns isomers were established. The configuration pi h(9/2)f(7/2) is assigned to the I(pi) = (8+) isomer, which implies that the h(9/2) and f(7/2) states are nearly degenerate. This is ascribed to increased binding of the f(7/2) orbital by its coupling to a low-lying I(pi) = (3-) state at E(x) = 1687 keV. The role of octupole and pairing correlations for a Z = 92 shell closure prediction is discussed on the basis of shell model calculati…
Equivalent-Single-Layer discontinuous Galerkin methods for static analysis of multilayered shells
2021
Abstract An original formulation for the elastic analysis of multilayered shells is presented in this work. The key features of the formulation are: the representation of the shell mean surface via a generic system of curvilinear coordinates; the unified treatment of general shell theories via an Equivalent-Single-Layer approach based on the through-the-thickness expansion of the covariant components of the displacement field; and an Interior Penalty discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the solution of the set of governing equations. The combined use of these features enables a high-order solution of the multilayered shell problem. Several numerical tests are presented for isotropic, orthotrop…
β decay of Cd127 and excited states in In127
2019
A dedicated spectroscopic study of the β decay of 127Cd was conducted at the IGISOL facility at the University of Jyvaskyla. Following high-resolution mass separation in a Penning trap, β-γ-γ coincidences were used to considerably extend the decay scheme of 127In. The β-decaying 3/2+ and 11/2- states in 127Cd have been identified with the 127Cd ground state and the 283-keV isomer. Their respective half-lives have been measured to 0.45(+12-8)s and 0.36(4) s. The experimentally observed β feeding to excited states of 127In and the decay scheme of 127In are discussed in conjunction with large-scale shell-model calculations.
Nuclear energy density optimization: Shell structure
2013
Nuclear density functional theory is the only microscopical theory that can be applied throughout the entire nuclear landscape. Its key ingredient is the energy density functional. In this work, we propose a new parameterization UNEDF2 of the Skyrme energy density functional. The functional optimization is carried out using the POUNDerS optimization algorithm within the framework of the Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. Compared to the previous parameterization UNEDF1, restrictions on the tensor term of the energy density have been lifted, yielding a very general form of the energy density functional up to second order in derivatives of the one-body density matrix. In order to impose c…
Experimental and theoretical study of thenf-level lifetimes of potassium
2008
The theoretical and experimental values of the 5f ,6 f ,7 f, and 8f radiative lifetimes of neutral potassium are reported. The reduced matrix elements for all allowed electric-dipole nf5/2-nd5/2, nf5/2-nd3/2, and nf7/2-nd5/2 transitions with n =5–8 in K arecalculated using the relativistic linearized coupled-cluster method with single and double excitations of Dirac-Fock wave functions included to all orders in many-body perturbation theory. The resulting electric-dipole matrix elements are used to evaluate the lifetimes of the 5f ,6 f ,7 f, and 8f states in neutral K and their uncertainties. The contributions from the nf5/2-ng7/2, nf7/2-ng7/2, and nf7/2-ng9/2 transitions to the lifetimes o…
Evidence for Three Microscopically Different Kinds of E1 Transitions in Lead-Region Nuclei
1986
One outstanding feature of the shell model in heavy nuclei is that within a main shell the single-particle transitions of electric dipole (E1) character are forbidden. This leads to the experimentally observed fact that the E1 transitions are usually hindered by a factor of about 10 with respect to the Weisskopf estimate. But since there is a dispersion of about two or three orders of magnitude among these hindrance factors, the isomeric E1 transitions have not been used to elucidate the mocroscopic properties of the involved states, as has been done for the E3 transitions of this nuclear region [1]. The E3 transitions often proceed via admixtures of the low-lying collective octupole state,…
Shell-model study of the highly forbidden beta decay 48 Ca → 48 Sc
1999
Ordinary β− decay of the 0+ ground state of 48Ca is studied. Partial half-lives for the highly-forbidden transitions to the three lowest-lying states (6+,5+,4+) of 48Sc are calculated by using both the harmonic oscillator and the Woods-Saxon mean-field wave functions. We find the decay to be dominated, as expected, by the unique fourth-forbidden transition to the excited 5+ state of 48Sc. The theoretical beta-decay half-life of 48Ca is found to be 1.1−0.6+0.8·1021 years which is approximately 25 times longer than the measured double-beta-decay half-life of T1/22ν = (4.3−1.1+2.4[stat] ± 1.4[syst])·1019 years.
The elastic scattering of 25MeV α-particles and neutron shell effects in the A = 50 TO A = 93 mass region
1982
Abstract Experimental elastic scattering angular distributions of 25 MeV α-particles scattered from 28 nuclei ranging from 50Cr to 93Nb have been measured and then analysed in terms of a regular optical model with standard Woods-Saxon geometries for both the real and imaginary potentials. The experimental distributions are well fitted over the whole angular range from 5° to 175° c.m. by the predictions, provided that a smaller than normal diffuseness is used for the imaginary potentials. The usual families of potentials with volume integrals differing by approximately 100 MeV · fm3 are found. The family with volume integral ranging from 540 to 420 MeV· fm3 over the nuclei studied has been c…

Level Scheme of 102In first observed
2019
Neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn have been investigated in-beam by particle and γ -ray spectroscopic methods using the NORDBALL detector array following the bombartment of a 54Fe target with a beam of 270 MeV 58Ni. Protons and α particles were identified with a 4 π ΔE -type Si-multidetector and neutrons with a 1π liquid-scintillator-detectorassembly placed in the forward derection. Excited states of 102 In were identified for the first time. The level scheme constructed from γ - γ -particle-coincidence and γ angular correlations is discussed and compared to the structure of neighboring nuclei in the framework of the nuclear shell model.
