2014

The aim of the present contribution is to explore Schelling’s theory of noble metals within the texts he wrote between 1801 and 1804, especially the System of Würzburg (1804). Schelling’s theory of noble metals and the closely related theory of the relationship between cohesion and specific gravity undergo a change between 1801 and 1804. In the Exposition of my Philosophical System (1801) Schelling places emphasis on the conflict between gravity and cohesion, and he conceives the relationship between specific gravity and cohesion in terms of inverse proportionality. Consequently, in this work he pays very little attention to the noble metals. In the texts that follow (1802-03), however, he …

A closed-form solution for natural frequencies of thin-walled cylinders with clamped edges

2016

Abstract This paper presents an approximate closed-form solution for the free-vibration problem of thin-walled clamped–clamped cylinders. The used indefinite equations of motion are classic. They derive from Reissner׳s version of Love׳s theory, properly modified with Donnell׳s assumptions, but an innovative approach has been used to find the equations of natural frequencies, based on a solving technique similar to Rayleigh׳s method, on the Hamilton׳s principle and on a proper constructions of the eigenfuctions. Thanks to the used approach, given the geometric and mechanical characteristics of the cylinder, the model provides the natural frequencies via a sequence of explicit algebraic equat…

INFLUENZA DEL CLIMA SULLA CRESCITA DEL SUGHERO IN SOPRASSUOLI PRODUTTIVI SICILIANI.

2009

Abstract: Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is usually dominant in silvopastoral systems in many areas of Sicily, where the trees are debarked periodically for cork production. In spite of the importance of cork and cork oak stands in Sicilian forests and the potential economic scenarios, few research works have been carried out on these systems. Given the importance of cork thickness in cork quality evaluation, the main objective of this work is to study cork growth in cork oak productive stands spread on the north (Nebrodi Mountains) and south-east (Iblei Mountains) of Sicily. Image analysis techniques were used on cork surfaces of transverse sections of planks to measure cork rings. Dendrochro…

Effects of ocean acidification on the shells of four Mediterranean gastropod species near a CO2 seep

2017

Marine CO2seeps allow the study of the long-term effects of elevated pCO2(ocean acidification) on marine invertebrate biomineralization. We investigated the effects of ocean acidification on shell composition and structure in four ecologically important species of Mediterranean gastropods (two limpets, a top-shell snail, and a whelk). Individuals were sampled from three sites near a volcanic CO2seep off Vulcano Island, Italy. The three sites represented ambient (8.15 pH), moderate (8.03 pH) and low (7.73 pH) seawater mean pH. Shell mineralogy, microstructure, and mechanical strength were examined in all four species. We found that the calcite/aragonite ratio could vary and increased signifi…

Baseline assessment of heavy metals content and trophic position of the invasive blue swimming crab Portunus segnis (Forskål, 1775) in the Gulf of Ga…

2018

This study provides a baseline assessment of cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, lead, and zinc concentrations in muscles, gills, and exoskeleton of the Lessepsian blue swimming crab Portunus segnis captured in the Gulf of Gabès (Southern Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia) in November 2015. Furthermore, the species’ trophic position is estimated using CN stable isotope analysis. The exoskeleton showed the lowest metal contents; in soft tissues, the essential Cu, Fe, and Zn and the non-essential Cd, Mn, and Pb showed the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. The crab was characterized by a trophic position of 3.32, confirming its carnivorous trophic habits. Compared with literature data on…

Growth and reproductive simulation of candidate shellfish species at fish cages in the Southern Mediterranean: Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) modelling …

2012

Abstract A Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model is used to simulate growth and reproduction of the shellfish Mytilus galloprovincialis and Crassostrea gigas in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) farm scenario situated in the Southern Mediterranean (the Gulf of Castellammare, Sicily). We modelled the effect of primary production enrichment at fish cages on shellfish growth and life history traits using 4 years-hourly temperature data (01 January 2006–31 December 2009) at a depth of 1 m. Outputs of the DEB simulations were: the maximum theoretical total shell length of shellfish, the potential reproductive outputs and the mean annual von Bertalanffy growth rate. There was a mean incr…

Growth of Mytilus galloprovincialis (mollusca, bivalvia) close to fish farms: a case of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture within the Tyrrhenian Sea

2009

A current practice of marine aquaculture is to integrate fish with low-trophic-level organisms (e.g. molluscs and/or algae) during farming to minimise effects of cultivation on the surrounding environment and to potentially increase economic income. This hypothesis has been tested in the present article experimentally, by co-cultivating fish and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) in the field. Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) experiments were started in July 2004 by transplanting mussel seed at two depths (-3 and -9 m) within 1,000 m downstream to fish cages and at 1,000 m upstream from cages. Mussels were cultured in nylon net bags for 12 months and the growth recorded biometri…

Parametric Experiments in Architecture : a Connection Joint Design for Sustainable Structures in Bamboo

2023

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the use of bamboo in the building industry. It systematically demonstrates bamboo’s utility in terms of its properties, describing the material properties of typical industrial bamboo products, and discussing their performance evaluation and optimization as building components and in the creation of building envelopes. The book presents the recent developments regarding the innovative ways to design and represent architecture through parametric survey tools, and describes the experimental geometrical-generative design process of a connection joint for free-form lightweight structures employing beams made of bamboo culms. It examines algorithmic-g…
