Artificial Reefs in Sicily: An Overview
2000
Sicilian cave drawings from the Grotta del Genovese, Isle of Levanzo (west Sicily) ca. 12 000 B.C. show silhouettes of dolphins, tuna, groupers and bass which, together with remains offish (tuna, groupers, bass and others), limpets and oysters from Grotta dell Uzzo, north-western Sicily, indicate the importance of fish and shellfish in the diet of coastal populations of that time (Villari, 1992a, 1992b). Remains of turtles (Caretta caretta), tuna and sharks are evidence of fishing activity during this period (Villari, 1995).
EPR dating of shells from Malhada Marsh, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
2020
The formation of the coastal plain of the Brazilian sea is mainly due to the fluctuation of relative sea level in the past. Armacao dos Buzios or simply Buzios is a municipality in the microregion of lakes, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In this region there is a lowland area about two meters above current sea level. This lowland area is also known as coastal plain of Una River. It is expected that during the Holocene period the sea level reached a maximum about 2.5 meters above the current level. During that time billions of mollusks lived and proliferated in the shallow waters around the coastal plain of the Una River. As they died their shells formed a layer in the soil including Malhad…
Lowstand carbonates, highstand sandstones?
2003
The sedimentary facies, sediment dynamics and sequence architecture of modern high-energy shelves in the mid and high latitudes are largely governed by wave abrasion processes. Cool-water carbonates may form there, if the influx and/or net accretion of siliciclastics is kept at a minimum. Little dilution of the carbonate produced in situ is generally promoted by a wide "epicontinental" shelf, subdued topography of the adjacent mainland, the predominance of limestone outcrops, and an arid climate. The aforementioned requirements are rarely met, and thus will automatically lead to the formation of mixed siliciclastic-cool-water carbonates. Such an example is found in the Early to Mid-Miocene …
The shell matrix of the freshwater mussel Unio pictorum (Paleoheterodonta, Unionoida). Involvement of acidic polysaccharides from glycoproteins in na…
2007
13 pages; International audience; Among molluscs, the shell biomineralization process is controlled by a set of extracellular macromolecular components secreted by the calcifying mantle. In spite of several studies, these components are mainly known in bivalves from only few members of pteriomorph groups. In the present case, we investigated the biochemical properties of the aragonitic shell of the freshwater bivalve Unio pictorum (Paleoheterodonta, Unionoida). Analysis of the amino acid composition reveals a high amount of glycine, aspartate and alanine in the acid-soluble extract, whereas the acid-insoluble one is rich in alanine and glycine. Monosaccharidic analysis indicates that the in…
A general framework for group authentication and key exchange protocols
2014
Published version of a chapter in the book: Foundations and Practice of Security. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-05302-8_3 In this paper, we propose a novel framework for group authentication and key exchange protocols. There are three main advantages of our framework. First, it is a general one, where different cryptographic primitives can be used for different applications. Second, it works in a one-to-multiple mode, where a party can authenticate several parties mutually. Last, it can provide several security features, such as protection against passive adversaries and impersonate attacks, implicit key authentication, forward and backward securi…
Morphological and molecular analysis of the freshwater bivalve Anodonta anatina in Iran and Finland
2022
Duck mussel, Anodonta anatina is a habitat generalist inhabiting both lentic and lotic aquatic ecosystems. Due to high morphological similarity and phenotypic plasticity, A. anatina has sometimes been misidentified as A. cygnea. Here, morphological and molecular studies were conducted on Anodonta mussels inhabiting North Iran and Finland. The individuals were collected from Anzali Wetland, Tajan River (North Iran) and Jyväsjärvi Lake (Finland). The COI sequence analysis showed the existence of A. anatina in the sampling areas. The Iranian and Finland specimens showed three and two haplotypes, respectively. The Iranian haplotypes were placed in a single clade, while the Finland haplotypes we…
Gérer la haine, fabriquer l’ennemi. Grecs et Carthaginois en Sicile entre les Ve et IVe siècles av. J.-C.
2012
Managing hate, creating the enemy. Greeks and Carthaginians in Sicily between the Vth and IVth century B. C. This paper’s aim is to consider the historiographic perception of the Carthaginians as the typical and utmost enemy of the Greeks in Sicily, between the end of the Vth and the beginning of the IVth century B. C. The focus is put on the ways the enemy is fabricated and hate managed, through the peculiar part given the Carthaginians by Diodorus in the sieges of Selinous and Motya. In these narratives, the role of hate is fundamental to define the relationship between cultural identity and alterity and between reciprocity and asymmetry.
Use of the eggshells in removing heavy metals from waste water - the process kinetics and efficiency
2019
Studies of the efficiency of Ni, Cu and Cd cations removal from water solutions were carried out, with the use of clay limestone, hen eggshells from eggs for consumption and hen eggshells after hatching, which main element is calcium carbonate. Hen eggshells are a waste product, which can be used as a substitute of clay limestone in removing heavy metals from wet flue gas desulphurisation installation. Mixed solutions of Ni, Cu and Cd were used in the research, with the composition similar to the waste water from wet flue gas desulphurisation installation: Ni (0.009-0.053 mmol/dm3), Cu (0.008-0.057 mmol/dm3)and Cd (0.003-0.008 mmol/dm3). The metals were determined by flame atomic absorption…
Cationic and Anionic Impact on the Electronic Structure of Liquid Water
2017
Hydration shells around ions are crucial for many fundamental biological and chemical processes. Their local physicochemical properties are quite different from those of bulk water and hard to probe experimentally. We address this problem by combining soft X-ray spectroscopy using a liquid jet and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations together with ab initio electronic structure calculations to elucidate the water–ion interaction in a MgCl2 solution at the molecular level. Our results reveal that salt ions mainly affect the electronic properties of water molecules in close vicinity and that the oxygen K-edge X-ray emission spectrum of water molecules in the first solvation shell differs signi…
Injektiot ja oikeuksien eskaloituminen luottamuksellisen tiedon turvaamisen uhkana
2016
Nowadays information systems and d…
