The pionic beta decay in chiral perturbation theory

2003

Within the framework of chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons and leptons, we present an updated analysis of the pionic beta decay including all electromagnetic contributions of order e**2 p**2. We discuss the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vud| from experimental data. The method employed here is consistent with the analogous treatment of the Kl3 decays and the determination of |Vus|.

Two Dimensional Quantum Chromodynamics as the Limit of Higher Dimensional Theories

1994

We define pure gauge $QCD$ on an infinite strip of width $L$. Techniques similar to those used in finite $TQCD$ allow us to relate $3D$-observables to pure $QCD_2$ behaviors. The non triviality of the $L \arrow 0$ limit is proven and the generalization to four dimensions described. The glueball spectrum of the theory in the small width limit is calculated and compared to that of the two dimensional theory.

Power-law running of the effective gluon mass

2007

The dynamically generated effective gluon mass is known to depend non-trivially on the momentum, decreasing sufficiently fast in the deep ultraviolet, in order for the renormalizability of QCD to be preserved. General arguments based on the analogy with the constituent quark masses, as well as explicit calculations using the operator-product expansion, suggest that the gluon mass falls off as the inverse square of the momentum, relating it to the gauge-invariant gluon condensate of dimension four. In this article we demonstrate that the power-law running of the effective gluon mass is indeed dynamically realized at the level of the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson equation. We study a gauge…

From loops to trees by-passing Feynman's theorem

2008

We derive a duality relation between one-loop integrals and phase-space integrals emerging from them through single cuts. The duality relation is realized by a modification of the customary +i0 prescription of the Feynman propagators. The new prescription regularizing the propagators, which we write in a Lorentz covariant form, compensates for the absence of multiple-cut contributions that appear in the Feynman Tree Theorem. The duality relation can be applied to generic one-loop quantities in any relativistic, local and unitary field theories. %It is suitable for applications to the analytical calculation of %one-loop scattering amplitudes, and to the numerical evaluation of %cross-section…

The massive analytic invariant charge in QCD

2004

The low energy behavior of a recently proposed model for the massive analytic running coupling of QCD is studied. This running coupling has no unphysical singularities, and in the absence of masses displays infrared enhancement. The inclusion of the effects due to the mass of the lightest hadron is accomplished by employing the dispersion relation for the Adler D function. The presence of the nonvanishing pion mass tames the aforementioned enhancement, giving rise to a finite value for the running coupling at the origin. In addition, the effective charge acquires a "plateau-like" behavior in the low energy region of the timelike domain. This plateau is found to be in agreement with a number…

Interpolating between low and high energy QCD via a 5D Yang-Mills model

2005

We describe the Goldstone bosons of massless QCD together with an infinite number of spin-1 mesons. The field content of the model is SU(Nf)xSU(Nf) Yang-Mills in a compact extra-dimension. Electroweak interactions reside on one brane. Breaking of chiral symmetry occurs due to the boundary conditions on the other brane, away from our world, and is therefore spontaneous. Our implementation of the holographic recipe maintains chiral symmetry explicit throughout. For intermediate energies, we extract resonance couplings. These satisfy sum rules due to the 5D nature of the model. These sum rules imply, when taking the high energy limit, that perturbative QCD constraints are satisfied. We also il…

Infra-Red Asymptotic Dynamics of Gauge Invariant Charged Fields: QED versus QCD

1999

The freedom one has in constructing locally gauge invariant charged fields in gauge theories is analyzed in full detail and exploited to construct, in QED, an electron field whose two-point function W(p), up to the fourth order in the coupling constant, is normalized with on-shell normalization conditions and is, nonetheless, infra-red finite; as a consequence the radiative corrections vanish on the mass shell $p^2=\mu^2$ and the free field singularity is dominant, although, in contrast to quantum field theories with mass gap, the eigenvalue $\mu^2$ of the mass operator is not isolated. The same construction, carried out for the quark in QCD, is not sufficient for cancellation of infra-red …

Features of quark and lepton mixing from differential geometry of curves on surfaces

1998

It is noted that the CKM matrix elements for both quarks and leptons as conceived in the Dualized Standard Model (DSM) can be interpreted as direction cosines obtained by moving the Darboux trihedron (a 3-frame) along a trajectory on a sphere traced out through changing energy scales by a 3-vector factorized from the mass matrix. From the `Darboux' analogues of the well-known Serret--Frenet formulae for space curves, it is seen that the corner elements ($V_{ub}, V_{td}$ for quarks, and $U_{e3}, U_{\tau 1}$ for leptons) are associated with the (geodesic) torsion, while the other off-diagonal elements ($V_{us}, V_{cd}$ and $V_{cb}, V_{ts}$ for quarks, and $U_{e2}, U_{\mu 1}$ and $U_{\mu 3}, U…

Infrared singularities of scattering amplitudes in perturbative QCD

2009

An exact formula is derived for the infrared singularities of dimensionally regularized scattering amplitudes in massless QCD with an arbitrary number of legs, valid at any number of loops. It is based on the conjecture that the anomalous-dimension matrix of n-jet operators in soft-collinear effective theory contains only a single non-trivial color structure, whose coefficient is the cusp anomalous dimension of Wilson loops with light-like segments. Its color-diagonal part is characterized by two anomalous dimensions, which are extracted to three-loop order from known perturbative results for the quark and gluon form factors. This allows us to predict the three-loop coefficients of all 1/ep…
