Influence of enzyme-aided extraction and ultrasonication on the phenolics content and antioxidant activity of Paeonia officinalis L. petals

Peony is a less utilized herbaceous plant of ornamental and medicinal relevance. The petals are rich in bioactive phenolics and hence, the development of efficient extraction is required for maximum recovery and bioactivity. In this study, the optimal conditions for the ultrasound-assisted extraction of peony phenolics were first investigated by comparing to conventional extraction and testing the data fit by mathematical models (linear, two factor interactions, quadratic) followed by investigation of cellulase pre-treatment combined with ultrasonication. Kundmannia sicula (L.) DC: a rich source of germacrene D

AbstractObjective: Kundmannia sicula is an herbaceous plant belonging to the family Apiaceae and is distributed in the Mediterranean coastal areas where it occurs in arid places. In this work, we have analysed the essential oil distilled from the aerial parts of K. sicula from Sicily (Italy) and its biological activity. Methods: GC-MS was used to analyze the chemical composition, whereas its antioxidant capacity and cytotoxicity on three human tumour cells (A375, MDA MB-231 and HCT 116) were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and MTT methods, respectively. Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb in the family Portulacaceae. It is a nutritious vegetable with high antioxidant properties and, it is among the richest plant source of ω-3 fatty acids, as well as a rich source of ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, tocopherols and beta-carotene. Omega-3 rich foods: Durum wheat spaghetti fortified with Portulaca oleracea

Abstract Portulaca oleracea is an annual succulent herb (purslane) with high antioxidant properties and high content of essential ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids, ascorbic acid, α-tocopherol and β-carotene. In the present study, sensorial and chemical analyses of uncooked and cooked durum wheat pasta fortified with purslane from three different Sicilian areas and at three different concentrations (5, 10 and 15%) were estimated. Par Gada augu 2020 tika izvēlēts Latvijas aizsargājamais augs ruiša pūķgalve, ko Latvijā pirmo reizi atradis dabaspētnieks Eduards Lēmanis (1841 – 1902) 1883. gadā Antonopolē. Tas kopā ar citiem ruiša pūķgalves herbārija paraugiem glabājas Latvijas Universitātes Muzeja Botānikas un mikoloģijas kolekcijās. Tie ir gan Latvijā, gan Igaunijā ievākti eksemplāri laika posmā no 1848. līdz 1977. gadam.

Monoterpene derivatives from the flowers of Ferulago campestris, (Apiaceae).

Ferulago campestris (Besser) Grec., (Ferula galbanifera (Mill) Kock. = F. campestris), finocchiazzo, is an annual or perennial herb of the Mediterranean area. In this paper the phytochemical studies of the CH2Cl2 and MeOH extracts of the flowers are described. Several ferulol derivatives and a new 10-hydroxy-verbenone ester (7) were isolated. The structure of the new compound was established by extensive NMR analysis, including HMBC and HSQC pulse sequences.

We have studied the mechanism of action of three 6a( R)-1,2-methylenedioxyaporphines as vasorelaxant compounds. The alkaloids assayed showed different affinities for the three human cloned alpha (1)-adrenoceptor (AR) subtypes stably expressed in rat-1 fibroblasts, showing lower affinity for alpha(1B)-AR with regard to the alpha(1A)- or alpha(1D)-subtypes. These three natural compounds are more potent inhibitors of [ (3)H]-prazosin binding than of [ (3)H]-diltiazem binding to rat cerebral cortical membranes. Screening and authentication of herbal formulations based on microextraction-assisted voltammetry of microparticles

A simple solid state electrochemical methodology for screening and authentication of herbal formulations is described. The proposed method is based on the recording of the voltammetric response, in contact with aqueous buffers, of microparticulate films of antioxidant compounds resulting from micro-extraction of dried herbal samples with ethanol or acetone. The obtained voltammetric responses led us to differentiate between diverse active components upon application of bivariate and multivariate chemometric techniques.
