Attraction of egg-killing parasitoids toward induced plant volatiles in a multi-herbivore context
2015
In response to insect herbivory, plants emit volatile organic compounds which may act as indirect plant defenses by attracting natural enemies of the attacking herbivore. In nature, plants are often attacked by multiple herbivores, but the majority of studies which have investigated indirect plant defenses to date have focused on the recruitment of different parasitoid species in a single-herbivore context. Here, we report our investigation on the attraction of egg parasitoids of lepidopteran hosts (Trichogramma brassicae and T. evanescens) toward plant volatiles induced by different insect herbivores in olfactometer bioassays. We used a system consisting of a native crucifer, Brassica nigr…
A β-1,3 Glucan Sulfate Induces Resistance in Grapevine against Plasmopara viticola Through Priming of Defense Responses, Including HR-like Cell Death
2008
Sulfated laminarin (PS3) has been shown previously to be an elicitor of plant defense reactions in tobacco and Arabidopsis and to induce protection against tobacco mosaic virus. Here, we have demonstrated the efficiency of PS3 in protecting a susceptible grapevine cultivar (Vitis vinifera cv. Marselan) against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) under glasshouse conditions. This induced resistance was associated with potentiated H2O2 production at the infection sites, upregulation of defense-related genes, callose and phenol depositions, and hypersensitive response-like cell death. Interestingly, similar responses were observed following P. viticola inoculation in a tolerant grapevine hybri…
Mycotoxins in herbal teas marketed in Latvia and dietary exposure assessment
2019
The occurrence of 12 mycotoxins has been analysed by liquid chromatography - time of flight mass spectrometry in the batch of 60 herbal teas purchased from drugstores in Latvia. Among the dry tea samples, 90% were positive for one to eight mycotoxins. Enniatin B and deoxynivalenol (DON) were the most frequently detected mycotoxins in 55% and 45% of the samples, respectively. DON reached the highest level, from 129 µg kg-1 in herbal blend to 5,463 µg kg-1 in wormwood tea. Ochratoxin A (OTA) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) were found in 10% and 20% of the samples at the concentrations ranged between 2.99-30.3 µg kg-1 and 3.40-23.7 µg kg-1. Studies of the tea infusion process indicated that 32-100% of…
Occurrence of Mycotoxins in Botanical Dietary Supplement Infusion Beverages.
2019
The aim of the present work was to study the occurrence of mycotoxins [aflatoxins (1-4), 3-acetyldeoxyniavlenol (5), 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (6), nivalenol (7), HT-2 (8), T-2 (9), ochratoxin A (10), zearalenone (11), enniatin A (12), enniatin A1 (13), enniatin B (14), enniatin B1 (15), and beauvericin (16)] present in potable products derived from herbal teas. Analysis was carried out by liquid chromatography coupled to ion-trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS-IT) after a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure (DLLME) was conducted. The DLLME method was applied to 52 commercial samples of chamomile, chamomile with anise, chamomile with honey, linden, pennyroyal mint, thyme, v…
Bimodal copper oxide nanoparticles doped phase for the extraction of highly polar compounds by in-tube solid-phase microextraction coupled on-line to…
2020
Abstract Polymers obtained from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and triethoxymethylsilane (MTEOS) have been functionalized with different metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), and used as coatings of extractive capillaries for the extraction of polar compounds by in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled on-line to nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC). The extraction capabilities of the new phases have been studied using several triazinic herbicides with log of octanol/water partition coefficients (Kow) ranging from -0.7 to 3.21 under reversed phase chromatographic conditions. Best extraction efficiencies for the most polar compounds (log Kow ≤ 2.3) were typically obtained …
Laboratory investigation into the development of resistance of Daphnia magna to the herbicide molinate.
2003
Daphnia magna (F0 generation) was exposed to different sublethal molinate concentrations (0, 3.77, 4.71, 6.28, 9.42, and 18.85 mg/L) during 21 days. Chronic toxicity tests, using the same herbicide concentrations, were also carried out during 21 days using neonates of F1 first brood (F1-1st) and F1 third brood (F1-3rd) offspring generations from the parentals (F0) preexposed to the herbicide. Finally, offspring (from F1-1st and F1-3rd broods) were transferred to herbicide-free medium during a 21-day recovery period. The alga Nannochloris oculata (5 x 10(5) cells/mL) was used as food in all the experiments. The effect of molinate on survival, reproduction, and growth was monitored for the se…
Caloric content of Daphnia magna as reflect of propanil stress during a short-term exposure and its relationship to long-term responses
2013
The present study investigates energy stores changes in the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna following a 5-d exposure to propanil. Juveniles of D. magna were exposed to sublethal propanil concentrations (0.07, 0.10, 0.21 and 0.55 mgl(-1)) which were used previously to test their effect on reproduction, growth and survival (21 days test) of D. magna. Glycogen, total lipids, proteins, and dry weight were determined in control and exposed daphnids at 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 h. Data were used to calculate caloric content as biomarker of propanil exposure. Results showed a depletion of energy reserves in D. magna exposed to the herbicide. At 120 h of exposure to the highest propanil concentrati…

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine at the forefront battle against COVID-19: Clinical experience and scientific basis.
2020
Abstract Background Throughout the 5000-year history of China, more than 300 epidemics were recorded. Traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM) has been used effectively to combat each of these epidemics’ infections, and saved many lives. To date, there are hundreds of herbal TCM formulae developed for the purpose of prevention and treatment during epidemic infections. When COVID-19 ravaged the Wuhan district in China in early January 2020, without a deep understanding about the nature of COVID-19, patients admitted to the TCM Hospital in Wuhan were immediately treated with TCM and reported later with >90% efficacy. Approach We conducted conduct a systematic survey of various TCM herbal pre…
Neuroglobin and cytoglobin overexpression protects human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells against oxidative stress-induced cell death
2006
Although reactive oxygen species (ROS) at physiological concentrations are required for normal cell function, excessive production of ROS is detrimental to cells. Neuroglobin and cytoglobin are two globins, whose functions are still a matter of debate. A potential role in the detoxification of ROS is suggested. The influence of neuroglobin and cytoglobin on cell death after oxidative stress in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells was evaluated. Exposure of SH-SY5Y cells to paraquat or H(2)O(2) resulted in a concentration- and time-dependent induction of apoptotic and necrotic cell death. H(2)O(2) was 16 times more potent to induce cell death as compared to paraquat. SH-SY5Y cells transfected w…
