P-glycoprotein and its inhibition in tumors by phytochemicals derived from Chinese herbs

P-glycoprotein belongs to the family of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. It functions in cellular detoxification, pumping a wide range of xenobiotic compounds, including anticancer drugs out of the cell. In cancerous cells, P-glycoprotein confers resistance to a broad spectrum of anticancer agents, a phenomenon termed multidrug resistance. An attractive strategy for overcoming multidrug resistance is to block the transport function of P-glycoprotein and thus increase intracellular concentrations of anticancer drugs to lethal levels. It is estimated that three quarters of the world population rely on herbal and traditional medicine as a basis for primary health care. The cool Galactic R Coronae Borealis variable DY Persei

Results of first CCD photometry during the recent deep light decline, and high-resolution spectroscopy, are presented for DY Persei. The spectra show variable blueshifted features in the sodium D lines. The C  lines are strong whereas neutron- capture elements are not enhanced. The isotopic 13 CN(2, 0) lines relative to 12 CN are of similar strength with those for the carbon star U Hya. All these confirm the RCB nature of DY Per and the existence of ejected clouds. Herein we describe the design and synthesis of novel artificial peptides mimicking the plastoquinone binding niche of the D1 protein from the green photosynthetic alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, also able to bind herbicides. In particular, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to model in silico the behaviour of three peptides, D1Pep70-H, D1Pep70-S264K and D1Pep70-S268C, as genetic variants with different affinity towards the photosynthetic herbicide atrazine. Empirical determination of Einstein A-coefficient ratios of bright [Fe II] lines

The Einstein spontaneous rates (A-coefficients) of Fe+ lines have been computed by several authors with results that differ from each other by up to 40%. Consequently, models for line emissivities suffer from uncertainties that in turn affect the determination of the physical conditions at the base of line excitation. We provide an empirical determination of the A-coefficient ratios of bright [Fe II] lines that would represent both a valid benchmark for theoretical computations and a reference for the physical interpretation of the observed lines. Generation of radiative knots in a randomly pulsed protostellar jet. II. X-ray emission

Protostellar jets are known to emit in a wide range of bands, from radio to IR to optical bands, and to date also about ten X-ray emitting jets have been detected, with a rate of discovery of about one per year. X-RAY EMISSION FROM PROTOSTELLAR JET HH 154: THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF A DIAMOND SHOCK?

X-ray emission from about ten protostellar jets has been discovered and it appears as a feature common to the most energetic jets. Although X-ray emission seems to originate from shocks internal to jets, the mechanism forming these shocks remains controversial. One of the best studied X-ray jet is HH 154 that has been observed by Chandra over a time base of about 10 years. We analyze the Chandra observations of HH 154 by investigating the evolution of its X-ray source. The Complex Morphology of the X-ray and Optical Emission from HH 154: The Pulsed Jet Scenario

We study the optical and X-ray emission from protostellar jets, focusing, in particular, on the case of HH 154. This project consists of two different and complementary approaches: the development of hydrodynamical models of the jet/ambient interaction, and the analysis of multi-wavelength observations. Comparing the results derived from the simulations with the observations we can infer the physical mechanisms leading to the complex morphology of the X-rays source observed at the base of HH 154.
