Geological and cultural heritage: Dissemination experiences in Tuscany

We report on some recent experiences of scientific dissemination activities on geomaterials carried out by a network of scientific organizations in Tuscany (Italy). The primary message we want to disseminate is that even the most "insignificant" rock (e.g., those constituting the bar or kitchen counter-tops) stores in their interior very useful information beyond the beautiful colors and their aesthetic appearance. These rocks can tell stories of very old geological periods on how they were formed. In its political discourse, the European Union balances Christian heritage, the secularization of European societies, liberal values and Europe’s culturally and religiously diverse contemporary reality. This article explores how the European Union narrates the story of Europe and the role of Christianity in this narrative. This exploration is based on two qualitative case studies focusing on key heritage and history initiatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament: the European Heritage Label and the House of European History. Textile conservation has given rise to small and medium-sized museums, usually with scarce resources. In Sicily, the little evidence that remains of silk production and opulent imports by the rich and powerful local aristocracy is kept in museums, parishes, and other cultural institutions. The Hybridization between the visible and virtual territory has become a commonplace for much of urban population. The city is mutating into an extended form in which the visible and virtual dimensions are blurred. In this sense, the city has a physical dimension that we appropriate differently and a semiotic dimension that allows us to communicate and establish social bonds. The abstract examines how European policies is facilitating the construction of smart cities which have a cultural heritage to be safeguarded.
