2021
The European Commission has recently identified cultural heritage as a focus area for EU cultural diplomacy. The article explores EU cultural diplomacy that deals with cultural heritage and develops the concept of heritage diplomacy based on a critical discourse analysis of interviews with EU officials and heritage practitioners working at sites awarded with the European Heritage Label. What do these actors mean by cultural diplomacy and how do they understand the role and potential of cultural heritage for it and with what effects? The analysis indicates that heritage diplomacy means different things for EU officials and heritage practitioners. Their discourses on the uses of cultural heri…

Transformations Accompanying a Shift from Surface to Drip Irrigation in the Cànyoles Watershed, Valencia, Spain
2017
Drip irrigation is widely promoted in Spain to increase agricultural production and to save water. In the Cànyoles watershed, Valencia, we analysed the consequences of change from surface irrigation to drip irrigation over the past 25 years. There were a number of transformations resulting from, or accelerated by, this change including the 1) intensification of well construction causing a redistribution in access to groundwater, water shortages and a lowering of the groundwater table; 2) expansion of irrigation into former rain-dependent uphill areas resulting in increased water use; 3) shift to higher- value monoculture fruit crops, but with associated higher crop water requirements; 4) in…

Some preliminary observations: too much is now asked of heritage institutions; new citizens’ and plebeian forms are emerging of asserting attachments; life-sci…
Sałatki mnicha, pierogi św. Jacka, kiełbaski z refektarza... Na szlaku "świętych" smaków
2016
Przedmiotem artykułu jest dziedzictwo kulinarne w kontekście wybranych elementów kultury religijnej. Omówiono przykłady promocji konkretnych potraw, wzorów żywieniowych nawiązujących do postaci określonych świętych (św.
Housing estates in the Baltic countries: the legacy of central planning in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania
2019
Nuo 1960 iki 1990 metų Europos gyventojų skaičius nuolat augo, todėl buvo pradėta masinė daugiabučių statyba. Daugiabučiai gyvenamieji namai sudaro reikšmingą bendrojo būsto fondo dalį Vidurio ir Rytų Europoje. Trijose Baltijos šalių sostinėse – Vilniuje, Rygoje ir Taline – 2011 metų duomenimis 58–75% gyventojų buvo įsikūrę dideliuose daugiabučių kvartaluose. Knygos tikslas – pateikti išsamią daugiabučių paveldo apžvalgą. Straipsnių rinkinyje didelis dėmesys skiriamas tokio būsto tipo susiformavimui, iššūkiams ir ateities perspektyvoms. Knyga pateikia naują šios specifines statinių rūšies tipologiją, susijusią su sovietmečio palikimo kompleksiškumu. Įžangoje apžvelgiamos pagrindinės šešiose…
