Phenotypic heterogeneity in bacterial cell populations allows genetically identical organisms to different behavior under similar environmental conditions. The Gram-negative bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens is an excellent organism to study phenotypic heterogeneity since their life cycle involves a symbiotic interaction with soil nematodes as well as a pathogenic association with insect larvae. Phenotypic heterogeneity is highly distinct in P. luminescens. The bacteria exist in two phenotypic forms that differ in various morphologic and phenotypic traits and are therefore distinguished as primary (1°) and secondary (2°) cells. Conformational heterogeneity of the point defects in silica: The lifetime of the phosphorescence band at 2.7 eV

We have measured the excitation and emission energy dependence of the lifetimes of the 2.7 eV photoluminescence band associated to oxygen deficient centers in silica glasses. The non-exponential behavior of this time decay is consistent with intrinsic conformational heterogeneity of these point defects in the amorphous matrix. Accordingly, we have analyzed the data in terms of a radiative rates distribution. Moreover, both surface and bulk typologies of these point defects have been studied. Stringlike Cooperative Motion in a Supercooled Liquid

Extensive molecular dynamics simulations are performed on a glass-forming Lennard-Jones mixture to determine the nature of the cooperative motions occurring in this model fragile liquid. We observe stringlike cooperative molecular motion (``strings'') at temperatures well above the glass transition. The mean length of the strings increases upon cooling, and the string length distribution is found to be nearly exponential.

Dynamical heterogeneities in a supercooled Lennard-Jones liquid

We present the results of a large scale molecular dynamics computer simulation study in which we investigate whether a supercooled Lennard-Jones liquid exhibits dynamical heterogeneities. We evaluate the non-Gaussian parameter for the self part of the van Hove correlation function and use it to identify ``mobile'' particles. We find that these particles form clusters whose size grows with decreasing temperature. We also find that the relaxation time of the mobile particles is significantly shorter than that of the bulk, and that this difference increases with decreasing temperature.

The question regarding a possible correlation of the time scales of primary and secondary relaxations in supercooled liquids is formulated quantitatively. It is shown how this question can be answered using spin-lattice relaxation weighted stimulated-echo experiments, which are presented in an accompanying paper [A. Nowaczyk, B. Geil, G. Hinze, and R. Böhmer, Phys. Rev. E 74, 041505 (2006)]. General theoretical expressions relevant for the description of such experiments in the presence of correlation effects are derived. Four-time rotational correlation functions

1998

A scheme to analyze four-time rotational correlation functions of any rank is developed and details for rank L = 1 and 2 are given. The scheme provides a transparent way for identifying deviations from simple Markovian dynamics as observed, e.g., in complex liquids close to the glass transition. The method should be applicable to NMR and optical multiple-pulse techniques as well as to photon correlation spectroscopy. Results are given for 2H-NMR multiple-pulse data in supercooled glycerol. We identify and analyze the dynamical heterogeneity of molecular reorientation in a range of 205 − 215 K close to the glass temperature Tg = 190 K.

Analyse spatiale des disparités régionales dans l'Europe élargie

The aim of this paper is to study the regional inequalities in the enlarged European Union using Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis applied to per capita GDP for 258 regions of EU27 over the period 1995-2000. Strong evidence in favor of global and local autocorrelation as well as spatial heterogeneity is found for the wealth distribution. We also show that the enlargement process leads to a new North-West - East polarization scheme instead of the previous results obtained in the literature highlighting a North-South polarization scheme. Implications for regional development and cohesion policies are finally explored.
