Does business strategy and management control system fit determine performance?

2021

PurposeThis study examines the relationship between business strategy, management control system (MCS) type and performance. Does the alignment of organisation business strategy and MCS fresult in better performance?Design/methodology/approachThis study draws on the business strategy and MCS type literature to identify business strategies and MCS types. A scoring method was used to identify business strategy types and cluster analysis to identify MCS types from a sample of 80 firms and 621 firm-years of data. Analysis of variance was used analyse the differences.FindingsFour types of MCS were identified and were labelled clan, adhocracy, market and hierarchy. The sample was split into defen…

Personality predicts social dominance in female zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, in a feeding context.

2011

6 pages; International audience; Although personality has been defined as a suite of correlated behaviours, most studies of animal personality actually consider correlations between a few traits. We examined the repeatability and correlational structure of five potential personality traits (activity, neophobia, exploratory tendencies, risk-taking behaviour and obstinacy), in female zebra finches. In addition, we assessed to what extent personality influenced social dominance in a feeding context in this gregarious species. All personality traits were found to be highly repeatable within individuals. In addition, except for obstinacy, all of them were related to each other, thus defining a b…

Personality predictors of social status attainment

2019

The current review summarizes recent advances in research on personality predictors of status attainment. In line with previous research, recent studies indicate that extraverted and narcissistic individuals tend to attain status in groups. Research on mediating processes includes a wide range of underlying motivational, behavioral, and interpersonal perception processes. Most generally speaking, those high in extraversion and narcissism attain status because they are more motivated to do so and thus display assertive behavior that makes them look competent. Situational contexts, group tasks, and cultural contexts can moderate the personality-status links by shaping these processes. For exa…

Art of Acting and Management Style. Results of psychological research on personality and hierarchy of values of outstanding Polish actors and manager…

2018

The article – which is based on the need theory proposed by McClelland and the author’s theoretical and empirical Personality and Axiological Model – deals with the research on two groups of professionally engaged individuals: outstanding Polish actors and managers in the area of services. The results obtained indicate a significant diversity of the groups in terms of personality traits and the hierarchy of values as well as the consistency of the image in the scope of significance of dimensions related to competence and autonomy. The sphere of motivation in both groups studied is remarkably similar as well. The results show that individuals who are effective and expect professional achieve…

Seabream (Sparus aurata) long-term dominant-subordinate interplay affects phagocytosis by peritoneal cavity cells.

2012

Fish are sensitive to stressful conditions that affect their innate immune systems and increase their susceptibility to diseases. We examined the social stress of paired gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Social hierarchies (dominant/subordinate) were characterised by behavioural changes, such as “aggressiveness” and “feeding order”; hierarchical positions were established within an hour of exposure to social stress and remained unchanged for approximately 1 year. To characterise physiological stress, we measured blood plasma levels of cortisol, glucose, and lactate as well as osmolarity and observed that the levels of these stress markers were higher in subordinate individuals than in domi…

Neutrino Flavor Sensitivity of Large Liquid Scintillator Detectors

2015

Abstract Scintillator detectors are known for their good light yield, energy resolution, timing characteristics and pulse shape discrimination capabilities. These features make the next-generation liquid scintillation detector LENA[1] (Low Energy Neutrino Astronomy) the optimal choice for a wide range of astro-particle topics including supernova-, solar-, and geo neutrinos. In addition to the excellent calorimetric and timing properties, scintillartor detectors (LSDs) are also capable of topology reconstruction sufficient to discriminate with adequate efficiency between electron and muon neutrino induced charge current events and neutral current events in the GeV energy range. This feature …

Very narrow quantum OBDDs and width hierarchies for classical OBDDs

2014

In the paper we investigate a model for computing of Boolean functions - Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (OBDDs), which is a restricted version of Branching Programs. We present several results on the comparative complexity for several variants of OBDD models. - We present some results on the comparative complexity of classical and quantum OBDDs. We consider a partial function depending on a parameter k such that for any k > 0 this function is computed by an exact quantum OBDD of width 2, but any classical OBDD (deterministic or stable bounded-error probabilistic) needs width 2 k+1. - We consider quantum and classical nondeterminism. We show that quantum nondeterminism can be more efficien…
