On the polymer physics origins of protein folding thermodynamics

2016

A remarkable feature of the spontaneous folding of many small proteins is the striking similarity in the thermodynamics of the folding process. This process is characterized by simple two-state thermodynamics with large and compensating changes in entropy and enthalpy and a funnel-like free energy landscape with a free-energy barrier that varies linearly with temperature. One might attribute the commonality of this two-state folding behavior to features particular to these proteins (e.g., chain length, hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, attributes of the native state) or one might suspect that this similarity in behavior has a more general polymer-physics origin. Here we show that this behavi…

Biomechanical Diagnosis and Rehabilitation Control of Pes Equinus Patiens by Computerized Motion Analysis

1985

If a foot is fixed in plantar flexion such as to inhibit a dorsal flexion beyond a rectangular position with reference to the lower leg the resulting syndrome is called pes equinus. These patients exhibit a characteristic gait with stance phases on tiptoe that may amount to a severe handicap for them. The pes equinus is a most common deformity found in patients with a hemiplegic or diplegic disorder in the region of the foot and the lower leg with typical structural changes in the ankle joint and the calf muscles. The therapy of the pes equinus depends on its etiology and its severity. A less severe pes equinus deformity can be treated by physical therapy and other conservative measures. Mo…

Esuberanza e mistero

2011

Hillslope evolution by nonlinear creep and landsliding: An experimental study: Comment and Reply

2002

[Roering et al. (2001)][1] describe very careful and interesting experiments that beautifully illustrate the transition from steady downhill creep at low gradients to highly dynamic transport on steep slopes. They interpret this behavior in terms of a single nonlinear diffusion coefficient,

A method for the calculation of the heat transfer coefficient in potato drying

1993

A method for the determination of the heat transfer coefficient was proposed for the first falling drying period of potato cubes. During this period, heat and mass transfer were considered as coupled phenomena. Temperature calculation inside the sample was performed using the macroscopic heat transfer balance. The heat transfer coefficient was computed by means of parametric identification, using the Gauss–Newton method. The figure obtained for the heat transfer coefficient shows good agreement with other sources.

Safety and Pharmacokinetics/Pharmacodynamics of the First-in-Class Dual Action HER3/EGFR Antibody MEHD7945A in Locally Advanced or Metastatic Epithel…

2015

Abstract Purpose: The novel dual-action humanized IgG1 antibody MEHD7945A targeting HER3 and EGFR inhibits ligand-dependent HER dimer signaling. This phase I study evaluated the safety, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and antitumor activity of MEHD7945A. Experimental Design: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic epithelial tumors received escalating doses of MEHD7945A (1–30 mg/kg) every 2 weeks (q2w) until disease progression or intolerable toxicity. An expansion cohort was enrolled at the recommended phase II dose (14 mg/kg, q2w). Plasma samples, tumor biopsies, FDG-PET were obtained for assessment of pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamic modulation downstream of EGFR and HER3. …

Scope Oriented Thermoeconomic analysis of energy systems. Part II: Formation Structure of Optimality for robust design

2010

This paper represents the Part II of a paper in two parts. In Part I the fundamentals of Scope Oriented Thermoeconomics have been introduced, showing a scarce potential for the cost accounting of existing plants; in this Part II the same concepts are applied to the optimization of a small set of design variables for a vapour compression chiller. The method overcomes the limit of most conventional optimization techniques, which are usually based on hermetic algorithms not enabling the energy analyst to recognize all the margins for improvement. The Scope Oriented Thermoeconomic optimization allows us to disassemble the optimization process, thus recognizing the Formation Structure of Optimal…

Exergetic and exergoeconomic analysis of a novel hybrid solar-geothermal polygeneration system producing energy and water

2016

Abstract A dynamic simulation model of a novel solar–geothermal polygeneration system and the related exergetic and exergoeconomic analyses are presented in this paper. The plant is designed in order to supply electrical, thermal and cooling energy and fresh water for a small community, connected to a district heating and cooling network. The hybrid system is equipped with an Organic Rankine Cycle fueled by medium-enthalpy geothermal energy and by a Parabolic Trough Collector solar field. Geothermal brine is also used for space heating and cooling purposes. Finally, geothermal fluid supplies heat to a Multi-Effect Distillation unit, producing also desalinized water from seawater.
