Desmoplastic fibroblastoma (collagenous fibroma) of the oral cavity

2016

Desmoplastic fibroblastoma is benign soft tissue tumor, with fibroblastic or myofibroblastic origin, that rarely occurs in oral cavity. We reported the case of a 56-year-old man who presented a tumor in the left mandibular alveolar ridge, with slow and asymptomatic growth, with no osseous involvement. The tumor was sessile with lobulated surface, covered by healthy mucosa with erythematous areas. The lesion was excised and specimens sent to histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Histopathological exam showed a non-encapsulated fibroblastic proliferation, characterized by myofibroblasts, spindle and stellate fibroblasts with large or oval nuclei and bi or tri nucleation, immersed in an abu…

In vivo Evaluation of [225Ac]Ac-DOTAZOL for α-Therapy of Bone Metastases

2018

Background Conjugates of bisphosphonates with macrocyclic chelators possess high potential in bone targeted radionuclide imaging and therapy. DOTAZOL, zoledronic acid conjugated to DOTA (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid), demonstrated promising results in vivo in small animals as well as in first patient applications using 68Ga for diagnosis via PET and the lowenergy β-emitter 177Lu for therapy of painful bone metastases. In consideration of the fact that targeted α-therapy probably offers various advantages over the use of β--emitters, the 225Ac-labelled derivative [225Ac]Ac-DOTAZOL was synthesized and evaluated in vivo. Here, we report on radiolabelling and biodist…

Seltene Parotistumoren

2003

Tumors of the parotid gland can be benign or malignant lesions. The pathophysiology of rare tumors of the parotid gland is often not sufficiently explored. In this paper two rare histological entities are described. In one patient a benign sebaceous lymphadenoma was histologically diagnosed. This type of tumor accounts for only 0.1% of all adenomas. The international literature is not conclusive about whether the tumor originates in the parotid gland itself or in the parotid lymph nodes. The second patient presented with a metastasis from a glioblastoma in the parotid gland. Again, the mechanism for metastasis of an intracerebral tumor to the parotid gland remains unknown. Iatrogenic seeding …

Muscle Histopathological Abnormalities in a Patient With a CCT5 Mutation Predicted to Affect the Apical Domain of the Chaperonin Subunit.

2022

Recognition of diseases associated with mutations of the chaperone system genes, e.g., chaperonopathies, is on the rise. Hereditary and clinical aspects are established, but the impact of the mutation on the chaperone molecule and the mechanisms underpinning the tissue abnormalities are not. Here, histological features of skeletal muscle from a patient with a severe, early onset, distal motor neuropathy, carrying a mutation on the CCT5 subunit (MUT) were examined in comparison with normal muscle (CTR). The MUT muscle was considerably modified; atrophy of fibers and disruption of the tissue architecture were prominent, with many fibers in apoptosis. CCT5 was diversely present in the sarcolem…

Modulation of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in Churg-Strauss syndrome respiratory mucosa: potential monitoring parameters.

2014

Churg-Strauss (CSS) syndrome is rare and of unknown etiology. It is associated with vasculitis, blood eosinophilia and granulomatosis, and affects multiple organs and systems at various stages of the disease. Specific diagnostic and monitoring tests are not yet available. This study aims to assess the changes in MMP-2 and MMP-9 along with the histopathological alterations in two cases of CSS, as possible potential diagnostic and monitoring criteria. Two adult male patients were diagnosed with CSS in the otorhinolaryngology clinic in the University of Palermo, based on multiple clinical and histopathologic criteria. Biopsies of respiratory mucosa were taken after the consent of the patients…

Mucosal Neuroma Syndrome without mutations of the RET-protooncogene: A histologic study on a case, supported by molecular genetic analysis.

2010

Mucosal neuromas are nerve hamartomas of the digestive tract and larynx, usually observed in the setting of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B), i.e. in the presence of typical mutations and in association with medullary thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma and marfanoid habitus. Exceptionally, they arise without the accompanying mutations and endocrine tumors, and in this paper we are reporting a histologic study on a case lacking the specific mutations. The patient was an adolescent girl with marfanoid habitus, with a left-sided epidermal nevus of the neck, and a bulging left upper lip and cheek. The left side of her tongue was considerably enlarged and studded with multiple protr…

Überprüfung der Läsionsgefahr des N. ischiadicus des Kaninchens durch die Applikation niedrig- und mittelenergetischer extrakorporaler Stoßwellen

2008

Aim The aim of the study was to evaluate the likeliness for peripheral nerve lesions following extracorporeal shock wave application. Material and method 82 rabbit sciatic nerves were randomized to undergo low-energetic (0.08 mJ/mm2), middle-energetic (0.28 mJ/mm2) or no (controls) shock wave therapy. After 1 to 28 days an independent neuropathologist checked the specimen for signs of neural lesions. Results Only after 14 and 28 days vacuolic swelling of the axons was noted, somewhat pronounced in the middle-energetic group. In no case was there any disruption of the nerve's continuity. We did not observe any neurapraxia. Conclusion Shock wave application does not threaten peripheral nerve …

Tick Bites - the View from Inside-Out

2009

The tick feeding process in humans and its effects on the host skin have been studied histologically on specimens of tick bites, some of which included the attached parasite, and on ticks extracted from lesions or caught in the wild. The specimens, included in paraffin, were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, orcein–Giemsa for elastic fibers, periodic acid-Schiff for polysaccharides, Weigert method for fibrin, Warthin-Starry stain for spirochetes, and Bodian’s method for nerve fibers. The mouthparts of the attached ticks were embedded in a cement cone, with the chelicerae and the hypostome lining the oral canal, while the basis capituli contained the pharynx with its anti-reflux valves, the hy…

Histologic analysis of specimens from laparoscopic endometrioma excision performed by different surgeons: does the surgeon matter?

2011

Objective To evaluate whether the amount of ovarian tissue inadvertently removed along with the endometrioma cyst wall at laparoscopy differs in relation to the operating surgeon's level of expertise. Design Multicenter, prospective trial. Setting Four tertiary care university hospitals. Patient(s) Fifty patients, aged 25 to 40 years, with monolateral ovarian endometriomas who underwent laparoscopic excision. Intervention(s) Operation with the stripping technique by surgeons with specific expertise in endometriosis surgery in four centers (groups A, B, C, and D) and by residents with average training in laparoscopic surgery (group E). Main Outcome Measure(s) Histologic examination for the e…

Die Bedeutung eosinophiler Granulozyten in Beziehung zu Allergie und Aspirin-Intoleranz bei Patienten mit Sinusitis polyposa

1999

BACKGROUND The development of nasal polyps might be influenced by different factors such as mucosal inflammation. Infiltration with eosinophils is a common finding, although in largely different quantitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS We investigated 58 patients suffering from nasal polyps who were assigned for endonasal sinus surgery based on endoscopic and CT findings. Out of these patients, 52% have already had sinus surgery and had recurrent polyps. All patients were subjected to both, allergy testing and a functional in vitro test for aspirin intolerance. During surgery, tissue samples were gained and send for histological examination with special respect to eosinophil infiltration. RESULTS Eo…
