Reducing the Human Effort in Text Line Segmentation for Historical Documents

Labeling the layout in historical documents for preparing training data for machine learning techniques is an arduous task that requires great human effort. A draft of the layout can be obtained by using a document layout analysis (DLA) system that later can be corrected by the user with less effort than doing it from scratch. We research in this paper an iterative process in which the user only supervises and corrects the given draft for the pages automatically selected by the DLA system with the aim of reducing the required human effort. Summary Background The involvement of Jewish doctors and scientists in the development of health resorts in eastern Galicia (part of the Austrian monarchy after 1772, and since 1918 as part of independent Poland, now part of Ukraine) is unquestionable; however, awareness of this fact is not that common. Meanwhile, also due to their work and activity, small borderland resorts became important medical, cultural and social centers of the region. There is one overriding objective in the literary oeuvre by U. Karatkevitch, namely that the writer tried to enliven and strengthen the weakened sense of national identity among the Belarusians. In the 1950s and the 1960s, it was far from easy in the USSR to encourage and propagate genuine and true Belarusian history, the beauty of the Belarusian language and Belarusian national identity. For his activities in this field, Karatkevitch was often stigmatized and punished. The article presents the hardships of the Belarusian writer, his struggles against censorship as well as unfavourable literary critics.

Aim: Determine the evolutionary origin of the heretofore poorly characterized contemporary Great White Shark (GWS; Carcharodon carcharias) of the Mediterranean Sea, using phylogenetic and dispersal vicariance analyses to trace back its global palaeo-migration pattern. Location: Mediterranean Sea. Taxon: Carcharodon carcharias. Methods: We have built the largest mitochondrial DNA control region (CR) sequence dataset for the Mediterranean GWS from referenced historical jaws spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. Este trabajo ofrece un análisis histórico sobre los problemas que tuvo que resolver la ciencia hasta llegar a la construcción de los conceptos macroscópicos de sustancia y compuesto químico en el contexto de la teoría daltoniana. Por otra parte, en él se muestran algunas de las dificultades de comprensión que estos conceptos ofrecen a los estudiantes. Para determinarlas, se realiza un estudio transversal con alumnos de 15 a 18 años, lo que permite evaluar el significado que otorgan a la idea de sustancia, al tiempo que se constata la necesidad de su comprensión para poder entender los cambios químicos.
