Traditional knowledge uncovered by serious historical research may help to identify new therapeutic agents. It also plays a part in safety evaluation and drug regulation. So far, however, this way of gaining knowledge is very much neglected in the concept of evidence based medicine, which is in no way contradictory to traditional use. Thus, the true meaning of the word 'tradition' is described, while reliable historical sources are quoted. It is then shown how research into the traditional use of medicinal plants is able to reveal knowledge about efficacy and safety of natural products. Der vorliegende Beitrag ist ein Versuch auf die wesentlichen Interessenfelder der frühen Schaffensphase von Ricarda Huch einzugehen. Einen methodologischen Zugriff bildet ihre Biografie sowie ihre geistesgeschichtliche Verankerung in der Epoche der deutschen Frühromantik. Im Sinne der Frühromantiker, vor allem Novalis’, strebte Huch eine Synthese an zwischen den geschichtlich überlieferten Tatsachen und der Vorstellungswelt des dichten-den Künstlers, der mit seiner Dichtkunst ein pädagogisches Ziel verfolgt, dessen oberstes Prinzip das humane Verhalten des Menschen in der Gesellschaft sein soll.

[Resumen] Existe una larga tradición en catalán de glosas explicativas a palabras consideradas obscuras o anticuadas en textos literarios antiguos. Esta tradición se remonta al siglo XVI, con la publicación de la obra de Ausiàs March, a causa del cambio de modelo de lengua literaria que se produce con el Renacimiento. Esta clase de glosas continúan durante los siglos XVII, XVIII y XIX, con una finalidad sobre todo actualizadora, para facilitar la lectura de los textos antiguos al lector moderno.
