Le prime attestazioni della presenza del tamburo a cornice in Sicilia risalgono al V secolo a.C. Lo strumento è poi documentato fino ai giorni nostri attraverso raffigu¬razioni, documenti d’archivio, resoconti di viaggiatori stranieri, testi di interesse folklorico e, piuttosto ampiamente, dalla ricerca etnomusicologica moderna, per mezzo di audio-registrazioni e videofilmati. Tambourines have been recorded until today by paintings archive documentation observations provided by foreign travellers folkloric literature and quite widely by modern ethnomusicology through audio and video recordings collected on the field. Morphology performance techniques repertoires decorations and social use of tambourines in Sicily refer to the wider context of Italian (central-southern part) and Mediteranean area but with some peculiarities chiefly referring to performance skills. Though similar to the techniques practised in other Italian regions in Sicily we can observe a typical style that can be connected with a common historical background with the Arabic-Islamic world.

Il tarantismo in Sicilia

Il testo prende in esame il complesso di materiali editi e inediti (fonti storiche e archivistiche, documenti musicali, testimonianze etnografiche) che attestano la presenza del tarantismo in Sicilia dalla metà del Seicento alla fine dell’Ottocento. Il caso siciliano viene quindi inquadrato nell’ambito dell’ampia letteratura che ruota intorno al fenomeno, a partire dal classico studio di Ernesto De Martino fino al dibattito sull’interpretazione del fenomeno fra i poli dell’esorcismo e della possessione, dovuto soprattutto all’etnomusicologo francese Gilber Rouget. Settore L-ART/08 - EtnomusicologiaThe text examines published and unpublished materials – such as historical and ethnographic sources archive records and musical documents – which testify the presence of tarantism in Sicily from mid-17th century to the end of the 19th. The Sicilian case is then considered in a wider context of contributions on the theme starting from the ‘classic’ De Martino’work up to the debate on the interpretation of the phenomenon between the poles of exorcism and possession chiefly rased by French ethnomusicologist Gilbert Rouget. The analyses is therefore expanded to the tradition of snakes bites healers (the ciaràuli) which shares with tarantism the spider symbolism and to certain kinds of religious processions characterised by frantic ‘dances’ which suggest elements of functional continuity with tarantism musical-choreutic therapy.

La Sicilia nell’Italia dialettale di Giulio Bertoni. I tratti fonetici

In 1916, Bertoni published his essay Italia dialettale in addition to the fundamental studies of Diez, Meyer-Lübke, D’Ovidio and, of course, Ascoli, on which Bertoni builds his geolinguistic reference framework. In that year a series of essays, specifically dedicated to some phonetic aspects of the Sicilian dialect, had already been written by German linguists on one hand and Sicilian folklorists on the other. The only Sicilian linguist at that time was Giacomo De Gregorio whose Saggio di fonetica siciliana (1890) appears among the bibliographic references of Bertoni’s work along with that of Heinrich Schneegans (Laute und Lautentwickelung des sicilianischen Dialects) published in 1888. “Caltanissetta fa quattro quartieri”, nello Stato della città del 1731

L’odonimia nissena, come emerge da “Lo Stato della Città di Caltanissetta nel 1731 sotto l’arciprete Giovanni Agostino Riva”, presenta la suddivisione storica in quattro quartieri così come consegnataci ancora nel Novecento nell’omonima canzone di Rosa Balistreri: nel manoscritto si elencano il “Quartieri chiamato delli Zingari”, il “Quartiero di Santo Rocco”, il “Quartiero di San Francesco” e il “Quartiero di Santa Vennira”. Per ciascuno dei quartieri l’arciprete segna non soltanto il tessuto viario con le denominazioni dell’epoca, ma anche le anime dei battezzati e dei non battezzati, specificando nomi, cognomi, mestieri, età.
