Traduire le terme oppidum : un exemple des difficultés posées par le Bellum ciuile de César
2020
Our purpose here is not to analyze again in detail the term oppidum and its definition, but rather to see how it was used in the specific context of Caesar’s Bellum ciuile. Previous analyses focused mainly on its use in the De Bello Gallico. Thus, the context in which the author uses the term oppidum in a work completed after the Gallic War leads, on the one hand, to question Caesar’s choice of the word oppidum, and, on the other hand, to propose different translations for it; it is through several examples that I wish to underline the complexity of the translator’s approach.

L'écart et l'entre-deux : traduire la culture
2011
Comparative linguistics seems to suggest that the gap between two languages can be filled by grammar. But mapping the structural gaps between languages hardly makes for the more fundamental gap that is created by the writing of a new text, a supposedly identical addendum to the first. Writing that new text entails questions about the nature of texts, their intentions, their interpretations. Translation must therefore develop a hermeneutical approach. This critical stance is about sorting out what belongs to the languages and what belongs to the text as a specific unit, as a cultural and authorial unit. Because of its cultural nature, translation questions the way one can carry meaning acros…
Fascinating Rhythm : Traduire le substrat musical dans Another Country de James Baldwin
2014
Baldwin’s Another Country is a deeply rhythmic novel, developing its musical theme through its characters and openly claiming its debt towards musical expression. Is it possible to translate this form of musical mimesis? The question involves taking into account comparative phonology and stylistics as well as the study of the linguistic means by which writing can create a rhythmic feel (repetitions, alliterations, rhymes, similarity of words, etc.). Rhythm and music are connected to deeper historical and social questions. For example preachin’ as a form of speech stands out as part of cultural stylistics. The study of the novel’s French translation sets off these dimensions of the original …
La Llegenda del llibreter assassí de Barcelona. Tradizione e traduzione. Note al margine dell’edizione italiana
2013

Environmental effects on the covariation among pace-of-life traits
2019
Pace‐of‐life syndromes (POLSs) are suites of life‐history, physiological and behavioural traits that arise due to trade‐offs between allocation to current and future reproduction. Traits generally show covariation that can arise from genetic and environmental influences on phenotypes and constrain the independent evolution of traits, resulting in fitness consequences and impacts on population dynamics. The notion that correlations among traits may vary among populations along environmental gradients suggests an important role for the environment in shaping and maintaining POLSs. However, no synthesis has been attempted of the myriad ways in which environmental factors should influence POLSs…
