Experimental evidence on photo-assisted O$^-$ ion production from Al$_2$O$_3$ cathode in cesium sputter negative ion source

2020

The production of negative ions in cesium sputter ion sources is generally considered to be a pure surface process. It has been recently proposed that ion pair production could explain the higher-than-expected beam currents extracted from these ion sources, therefore opening the door for laser-assisted enhancement of the negative ion yield. We have tested this hypothesis by measuring the effect of various pulsed diode lasers on the O$^-$ beam current produced from Al$_2$O$_3$ cathode of a cesium sputter ion source. It is expected that the ion pair production of O$^-$ requires populating the 5d electronic states of neutral cesium, thus implying that the process should be provoked only with s…

A U.S.-based Electron-Ion Collider

2019

Abstract An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) in USA is currently discussed as a next-generation facility for high-energy nuclear physics. The main goal of the EIC is to study fundamental questions of Quantum Chromodynamics, which include the origin of the nucleon mass and spin and the three-dimensional structure of the nucleon in terms of quarks and gluons, the emergent properties of dense systems of gluons, and influence of nuclear matter on distributions of quarks and gluons and propagation of color charges through it. The EIC machine designs are aimed at achieving variable center of mass energies of 20 – 100 GeV, upgradable to 150 GeV, high degree of polarization ( 70%) of beams of electrons,…

Dealing with contaminants in Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams

2020

Abstract Data analysis of the Coulomb excitation experiment of the exotic 206Hg nucleus, recently performed at CERN’s HIE-ISOLDE facility, needs to account for the contribution to target excitation due to the strongly-present beam contaminant 130Xe. In this paper, the contamination subtraction procedure is presented.

Event plane determination with the new ALICE FIT detector

2021

During the on-going second long shutdown of LHC, the forward detectors of the ALICE experiment are implementing an extensive upgrade. In particular, a new Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) has been designed and built. It consists of three sub-detector systems delivering a broad range of online functionalities, and an essential input for event characterization and physics analysis. For instance, FIT will deliver the precise collision time for the TOF-based particle identification, provide the centrality and the event plane information, and measure the cross section of diffractive processes. This note will discuss usage of FIT in the event plane determination during Run 3. A simulated event plan…

Method for estimating charge breeder ECR ion source plasma parameters with short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions

2020

Abstract A new method for determining plasma parameters from beam current transients resulting from short pulse 1+ injection of metal ions into a charge breeder electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been developed. The proposed method relies on few assumptions, and yields local values for the ionisation times 1 / n e σ v q → q + 1 inz , charge exchange times 1 / n 0 σ v q → q − 1 cx , the ion confinement times τ q , as well as estimates for the minimum plasma energy contents n e E e and the plasma triple products n e E e τ q . The method is based on fitting the current balance equation on the extracted beam currents of high charge state ions, and using the fitting coefficients to dete…

HE-LHC: The High-Energy Large Hadron Collider : Future Circular Collider Conceptual Design Report Volume 4

2019

In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the fourth volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider HE-LHC. It summarizes the HE-LHC physics discovery opportunities, presents the HE-LH…

Tools for physics with LHC and RIB

2009

My thesis consists of two parts. T0, the fast timing and trigger detector for the ALICE experiment at CERN LHC, is the subject of the first part. My contribution included simulations, design, construction, tests, installation and commissioning of the detector. We hope that the T0 will play a noticeable role in extracting the first physics results and providing the beam diagnostics during the restart of LHC in autumn 2009. This part of my thesis concludes with how T0 can be used for ALICE luminosity and multiplicity measurements as well as for a verification of the position of the interaction along the longitudinal and transverse axis already during the runs in the LHC commissioning period. …

Efficiency investigation of a negative hydrogen ion beam production with the use of the gasdynamic ECR plasma source

2020

Negative hydrogen ion sources are of great demand in modern physics as injectors into accelerators and drivers for neutral beam injectors for fusion devices. It has been shown earlier that the use of the gasdynamic ECR discharge provides the opportunity to extract up to 80 mA/cm2 of negative ion current density. We studied experimentally the volumetric negative hydrogen ion production and vacuum ultraviolet emission in a gasdynamic ECR discharge. The high-density plasma was sustained by the pulsed 37 GHz / 100 kW gyrotron radiation in a magnetic configuration consisting of two consecutive simple mirror traps. The future prospects of the volumetric H– source based on the gasdynamic ECR disch…

Diagnostic techniques of minimum-B ECR ion source plasma instabilities.

2022

The performance of a minimum-B Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) is traditionally quantified by measuring the beam current and quality of the extracted ion beams of different charge state ions. The stability of the extracted ion beam currents has drawn more attention recently as the technology is pushing its limits toward higher ion charge states and beam intensities. The stability of the extracted beam is often compromised by plasma instabilities manifesting themselves as rapid oscillations of the beam currents in millisecond scale. This paper focuses on practical aspects of diagnostics techniques of the instabilities, showcases examples of instability-related diagnostics sig…

Scattering off the color glass condensate

2015

In this thesis the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework, which describes quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at high energy, is applied to various scat- tering processes. Higher order corrections to the CGC evolution equations, known as the BK and JIMWLK equations, are also considered. It is shown that the leading order CGC calculations describe the experimen- tal data from electron-proton deep inelastic scattering (DIS), proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions. The initial condition for the BK evolution equation is obtained by performing a fit to deep inelastic scattering data. The fit result is used as an input to calculations of single particle spectra and nuclear suppression in proton-prot…
