STCMS: A Smart Thermal Comfort Monitor For Senior People

2020

Undoubtedly, the steady increase in the number of elderly people is not to be underestimated. These demographic changes call attention to new challenges regarding adequate aging-in-place strategies. Since the majority of the senior population spend up to 90% of their time indoors, appropriate and comfortable housing represents an important foundation for such strategies. In this respect, different types of data gathered from sensors, connected devices, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies come to play an important role to support services for the elderly population in indoor environments. One of the aspects of concern is thermal comfort. In this paper, we introduce a new deep learning-…

2018

Smith and colleagues developed the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS) to assess the individual ability to recover from stress despite significant adversity. This study aimed to validate the German version of the BRS. We used data from a population-based (sample 1: n = 1.481) and a representative (sample 2: n = 1.128) sample of participants from the German general population (age ≥ 18) to assess reliability and validity. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) were conducted to compare one- and two-factorial models from previous studies with a method-factor model which especially accounts for the wording of the items. Reliability was analyzed. Convergent validity was measured by correlating BRS scores …

Cognitive and neuropsychological profiles of the elderly

1993

Testing the cognitive functions of the elderly is often eclectic and atheoretical. We take a theoretical model, simultaneous and successive processing, and the tests derived from it to describe the cognitive functions of the elderly. Subsequently, the performance of an elderly sample on a battery of neuropsychological tests is examined and also understood in relation to the two processing modes. Subjects were 81 individuals, 75 years old, from a population of nearly 300 persons participating in a Finnish research project on aging. They were administered tests of simultaneous and successive processing as well as an extensive battery of neuropsychological tasks. Multivariate and univariate an…

Foraging site fidelity shapes the spatial organisation of a population of female western barbastelle bats

2009

Abstract Information about the spatial distribution of individual foraging habitats, which determines the space required by a population to be viable, is vitally important for the conservation of bats. Detailed knowledge of this kind is crucial for the design of nature reserves and management plans. Recent field studies that examined habitat use and home range distribution of bats largely ignored factors like traditional range use vs. intra- and interspecific competition, which may be responsible for the spatial organisation of a population home range. We investigated the home range sizes and distribution of a maternity colony of the western barbastelle bat via radio telemetry in four conse…

Social overwintering and food distribution in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus

1991

We studied overwintering in the bank vole Clethrionomys glareolus in four 0.5 ha enclosures in an abandoned field in central Finland in the winter 1987/88. In two of the enclosures food was offered evenly distributed over the whole enclosed area (Even Enclosures = EE), in the two others food was offered in one feeding patch with four feeding chambers 2 m apart (Patchy Enclosures = PE). Food was provided in about the same amount in both enclosures. The experiment commenced in early October, with 13 females and 11 males in EEs and 12 + 13 voles in PEs. After two months the voles in the PEs were concentrated around the feeding patches. Territoriality was not observed in EEs, instead the voles …

Spatial ecology of coastal Atlantic cod Gadus morhua associated with parasite load

2015

Acoustic tags and receivers were used to investigate the spatial ecology of coastal Atlantic cod Gadus morhua (n = 32, mean fork length: 50 cm, range: 33–80 cm) on the Norwegian Skagerrak coast in 2012. Monthly home ranges (HR), swimming activity and depth use varied considerably among individuals and through the months of June, July and August. HR sizes for the period ranged from 0·25 to 5·20 km2 (mean = 2·30 km2). Two thirds of the tagged G. morhua were infected with black spot disease Cryptocotyle lingua parasites; these fish had larger HRs and occupied deeper water compared with non-infected fish. The infected fish also tended to be more active in terms of horizontal swimming. From an e…

Factorial Structure and Psychometric Properties of the Sensation Seeking Scale – Form V (SSS-V) in a Sample of Italian Adolescents

2013

The present study was designed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Sensation Seeking Scale – Form V (SSS-V) for the Italian-speaking population. The instrument was administered to 1,530 high school and college students. A second group of 268 high school students completed the SSS-V and the Impulsiveness Questionnaire (IVE). Exploratory factor analysis highlighted a 2-factor structure, Thrill and Adventure Seeking (TAS) and Disinhibition (Dis). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed an adequate model fit. Internal consistency of the subscales was marginally supported using the alpha reliability measure. Convergent validity was supported by significant positive correlations between …

Role of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signaling pathway in exceptional longevity in humans

2018

Centenarians are the best example of successfully aging in humans. Thus, the characterization of the biological processes and pathways in this population is an excellent strategy to understand the lifespan extension. The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is a ligand-activated-transcription factor historically known for regulating expression of several important drug-detoxifying proteins. But recently its role in the immune response and in cellular homeostasis has been recognized. Furthermore, AhR is activated in C. Elegans in extreme longevity due to a dietary restriction. We report here results of a whole transcriptome analysis of centenarians. The main biological process was the immune resp…

Appraisal and Evaluation of the Learning Environment Instruments of the Student Nurse: A Systematic Review Using COSMIN Methodology

2023

Background: Nursing education consists of theory and practice, and student nurses’ perception of the learning environment, both educational and clinical, is one of the elements that determines the success or failure of their university study path. This study aimed to identify the currently available tools for measuring the clinical and educational learning environments of student nurses and to evaluate their measurement properties in order to provide solid evidence for researchers, educators, and clinical tutors to use in the selection of tools. Methods: We conducted a systematic review to evaluate the psychometric properties of self-reported learning environment tools in accordance with th…

Vecāka gadagājuma cilvēku subjektīvā labizjūta integrācijas kā līdzdalības procesā sociālās aprūpes mājā

2013

Anotācija Promocijas darba pētījuma aktualitāti nosaka pārmaiņas, kuras saistītas ar sociālekonomisko problemātiku Latvijā 90-os gados un tās izpratnes nepieciešamību, risinot vecāka gadagājuma cilvēku integrācijas iespējas jaunā sociālā vidē. Vecāka gadagājuma cilvēki tika izolēti no iepriekšējās dzīves vietas un viņiem bija nepieciešams sociāli pedagoģiskais atbalsts integrācijai sociālās aprūpes mājā. Vecāka gadagājuma cilvēku integrēšanās sociālajā vidē ir apgrūtināta līdzdalības sabiedriskajā dzīvē iespēju nepietiekamības dēļ. Teorētiskās analīzes rezultātā izveidots novecošanas procesa izpētes teorētiskais ietvars, noteikti labizjūtas un līdzdalības rādītāji. Pētījums veikts, lai papl…
