The precursors of double dissociation between reading and spelling in a transparent orthography.
2016
Research and clinical practitioners have mixed views whether reading and spelling difficulties should be combined or seen as separate. This study examined the following: (a) if double dissociation between reading and spelling can be identified in a transparent orthography (Finnish) and (b) the cognitive and noncognitive precursors of this phenomenon. Finnish-speaking children (n = 1963) were assessed on reading fluency and spelling in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. Dissociation groups in reading and spelling were formed based on stable difficulties in grades 1–4. The groups were compared in kindergarten phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, letter knowledge, home literacy environment, a…
Psychometric properties of observational tools for identifying motor difficulties – a systematic review
2019
Abstract Background Early identification of children with motor difficulties, such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD), is essential. At present only a fraction of children with DCD are identified. The purpose of the study was to systematically review the literature from 1994 to 2017 on observational screening tools and to evaluate the validity, reliability and usability of the questionnaires used. Methods The review of the literature was conducted to synthesize the data from five electronic databases for children aged 6–12 years. The following databases were searched: Academic search Elite (EBSCO), ERIC (ProQuest), MEDLINE (Ovid), PsycINFO (ProQuest), and SPORTDiscus with Full Tex…

The purpose of this doctoral dissertation in social work is to illustrate the open care child welfare support that is conducted in private homes. Family work in this study is seen as essentially morally charged work, because the study’s theoretical background approach-es social work from a perspective of reflective, relation-based theory. The object of the study is parents’ and family workers’ experiences of family work, especially within a private home setting. The research data were collected from eight family workers and eight parents from six different families. These individual interviews were conducted as thematic interviews in 2014 and 2015. The data were analysed using thematic cont…
Physical activity as a predictor of disability and social and health service use in older people
2009
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether functional status and physical activity history predict all-cause hospital and long-term care use among older community-dwelling people. In addition, the effects of physical activity counseling on instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability and home care service use in an older sedentary population were studied.Data from three larger studies were used. The Evergreen project cohorts born in 1910 and 1914 consisted of 617 persons. From the Evergreen project interview data on individuals born in 1908-1923, a decedent population was investigated (n=846). Screening and Counseling for Physical Activity and Mobility among Older Peop…
Potential and challenges in home care service process optimization : a route optimization approach
2016
Aging of the population is an increasing problem in many countries, including Finland, and it poses a challenge to public services such as home care. Vehicle routing optimization (VRP) type optimization solutions are one possible way to decrease the time required for planning home visits and driving to customer addresses, as well as decreasing transportation costs. Although VRP optimization is widely and succesfully applied to commercial and industrial logistics, the home care is a relatively new application area for it. This thesis examines what kind of distance and time savings would be possible to achieve if daily home care operations are optimized in the similar manner as typical VRP op…
Experiences of family caregivers of persons living with dementia with and without a smart-clothes assisted home nursing program during the heightened…
2022
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has required restrictions of daily activities, which has been found to impact the lives of persons living with dementia (PLWDs) and their family caregivers, who have multiple care demands. The lack of relevant studies in Taiwan emphasized the need to explore the experiences of family caregivers of older PLWDs faced with the intensified restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19, and the impact of the availability of a smart-clothes home nursing program. Methods This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with family caregivers of older PLWDs. Participants were recruited from dementia clinics of a medical center in northern Taiwan from a subset…

Efforts to maintain Latvian identity in Augšbebri village, Omsk region
2015
Driven by various motives, Latvian emigrants and exiles have been voluntarily or involuntarily choosing various regions of the world as their new home. Siberia is one such region – the first Latvian exiles were deported to this remote Russian territory already in the 18th century and a new wave of settlers moved there on their own accord in search of a better life in the early 19th century. Some of the Latvian villages have survived in Russia to this day. Augšbebri (Bobrovka) village in the Tara district, Omsk region, is one of them. Augšbebri village was founded in 1897 when the first settlers from Latvia registered as residents there. The modern-day residents of Augšbebri are the sixth ge…

"Lauletaan vaan yhdessä, pojat!" : musiikki ja identiteetti sotiemme veteraanien ryhmämusiikkiterapiassa - etnografis-narratiivinen tutkimus
2016
Studies concerning music and identity have shown that the music which an individual values as important tells stories about the subjective reality of the individual (Lehtonen & Niemelä 1997; Baker & Wigram 2004). Through the use of individualized meaningful music in music therapy, a possibility for raising and evaluating processes connected with identity can be created (Magee & Davidson 2004b). Even recent brain studies have shown these connections. When meaningful music is used activity is observed within deep parts of the brain, suggesting a connection between contextualized meaningful music and activity in the brain where the pleasure and the autobiographical memory centers exist (Buruna…
