Liikuntatehtäviä kotiläksyinä : koulun ulkopuolella tapahtuva oppiminen opetuksen tukena tyttöjen liikunnassa
2017
Tässä liikuntaläksykokeilussa tutkittiin, miten erilaiset liikunnalliset kotitehtävät, liikuntaläksyt, toteutuivat koululiikunnan osana ja miten oppilaat kokivat liikuntaläksyt sekä oman osallisuutensa niiden tekemisessä. Liikuntaläksykokeilu toteutettiin lukuvuonna 2015–2016 keskisuomalaisessa koulussa 6.–9.-luokan tyttöjen kanssa, yhteensä 117 tyttöä. Liikuntaläksykokeilun päätteeksi tehdyn oppilaskyselyn vastaukset analysoitiin frekvenssien, ristiintaulukoiden (khiin neliötesti) ja keskiarvovertailujen avulla (varianssianalyysi ja t-testi). Kyselylomakkeen avoimet vastaukset järjestettiin luokkaasteittain ja läksytyypeittäin. Oppilaskyselyn vastausten mukaan liikuntaläksyjä tehtiin ahker…
Finnish Adolescent Girls’ Activity Patterns and The Effects of an Activity-Based Homework Intervention on Their Physical Activity
2021
Purpose: The insufficient physical activity (PA) of adolescents is a global challenge, and there is a need to find opportunities to engage youth in active lifestyles. The majority of adolescents do not meet the recommended guidelines of physical activity, and especially females have low levels of activity as they approach adolescence. The goal of this study was to obtain insight into Finnish adolescent girls’ objectively measured physical activity by evaluating the effects of an activity-based homework intervention on low, medium, and high-active girls during after-school hours. Method: A physical activity homework intervention was put into place for female adolescent girls. Physical activi…
A person-oriented approach to maternal homework involvement during the transition to lower secondary school
2022
This study examined patterns of mothers' homework involvement (n = 680 in Grade 6 and 665 in Grade 7) and changes in them during 12-year-old Finnish adolescents' (n = 848; 391 boys) transition to lower secondary school. Moreover, the extent to which adolescents' motivational behavior and prior academic achievement predicted these patterns was examined. The latent transition analyses identified four relatively stable latent patterns of maternal homework involvement in Grades 6 and 7: averagely involved, psychologically controlling and intrusive, noninvolved, and intrusive monitoring and helping. The higher task avoidance and the poorer achievement adolescents showed, the more likely their mo…
The Role of Physical Education Homework to Adolescent Girls’ Physical Activity in Finland
2019
Introduction: There is an urgent need for active strategies to promote physical activity (PA) among female adolescents, as they are at greater risk of physical inactivity. In addition to Physical Education (PE) in school, to reach adequate levels of PA, young people need to participate in PA during the school day and/or after-school hours and/or in the before-school period. One week of objectively measured and self-reported information enlightens the status quo of adolescent girls’ PA and the role that PE homework plays. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine girls’ objectively measured PA in a lower secondary school as part of the Physical Education Homework Study, a project con…
Reading and math skills development among Finnish primary school children before and after COVID-19 school closure
2022
AbstractThis study quantified the possible learning losses in reading and math skills among a sample of Finnish Grade 3 children (n = 198) who spent 8 weeks in distance learning during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020. We compared their reading and math skill development trajectories across Grades 1, 2, and 4 to a pre-COVID sample (N = 378). We also examined if gender, parental education, maternal homework involvement, and child’s task-avoidant behavior predict children’s academic skills at Grade 4 differently in the pre-COVID sample compared with the COVID sample. Children’s reading and math skills were tested, mothers reported their education and homework involvement…
Female Cyborgs, Gender Performance, and Utopian Gaze in Alex Garland’s Ex Machina
2020
The cyborg as a metaphor for cultural encodings of the interaction between humans and technology has been an accepted trope since the publication of Donna Haraway’s “Cyborg Manifesto.” Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina shares many of its key themes and motifs with earlier science fiction films, from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner. A first viewing of the film thus suggests an interpretation that focuses on the film’s portrayal of its female cyborgs Ava and Kyoko as another version of the “pleasure model” in the mode of Lang’s Maria or Scott’s Pris. However, it is the tension between Ava’s intelligence and visual attractiveness and her performance of a female gender …
Reducing homework stress by increasing adoption of need-supportive practices: Effects of an intervention with parents
2020
Abstract Homework is widely recognized as a source of stress for both parents and children, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study tested the hypothesis that the frustration of the basic psychological needs for competence, autonomy and relatedness is the main source of stress and that satisfying these needs should reduce stress and lead to more positive outcomes. Study 1 assessed the associations between parental and child need frustration, homework stress and parental adoption of need-thwarting practices (n = 171 parent/child dyads). Study 2 tested the effectiveness of a four-session parental training (n = 55) program focused on helping parents increase their need-support…
Parental Involvement in Math Homework: Links to Children’s Performance and Motivation
2017
The present study examined the longitudinal associations between children’s perceptions of parental involvement in math homework (control and support) and their math performance and motivation (taskpersistent homework behavior and math self-concept). Children (n = 512) reported their perceptions concerning parental involvement in sixthgrade math homework. In grades 3 and 6, children completed math tests, evaluated own math self-concept, and their mothers (n = 420) evaluated task persistence during homework. The results showed that low selfconcept in math predicted increased parental control, which in turn related to low math performance, task persistence, and math selfconcept. Second, perce…
