Existentially Closed Groups in Specific Classes

This survey article is intended to make the reader familiar with the algebraic structure of existentially closed groups in specific group classes, and with the ideas and methods involved in this area of group theory. We shall try to give a fairly complete account of the theory, but there will be a certain emphasis on classes of nilpotent groups, locally finite groups, and extensions.
Application of atomic and nuclear techniques to the study of inhomogeneities in electrodeposited α-particle sources

Three α-particle sources made by different methods of electrodeposition were analysed using α-particle spectrometry, Rutherford backscattering (RBS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) on several surface zones. The thickness and homogeneity of these sources was studied using RBS, and the results were analysed jointly with those obtained with α-particle spectrometry and AFM techniques. The comparison of the electrodeposition methods showed that the most homogeneous electrodeposited zones corresponded to the source made with a stirring cathode.

High homogeneity permanent magnet for diamond magnetometry

Abstract Halbach magnets are a source of homogeneous magnetic field in an enclosed volume while keeping stray fields at a minimum. Here, we present the design, construction, and characterization for a stack of two Halbach rings with 10 cm inner diameter providing a homogeneous ( 100 ppm over 1.0 × 1.0 × 0.5 cm 3 ) magnetic field of around 105 mT, which will be used for a diamond based microwave-free widefield imaging setup. The final characterization is performed with a novel fiberized diamond-based sensor on a 3D translation stage documenting the high homogeneity of the constructed Halbach array and its suitability for the proposed use.
Characterization of alpha sources prepared by direct evaporation using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry

Abstract Standardization of solutions containing alpha emitting nuclides by direct evaporation onto metal supports is a widely used technique due to its simplicity in providing good quantitative results. In order to avoid inhomogeneity in the deposition surface, polished stainless steel disks and a spreading agent are generally used. These sources are usually measured by alpha spectrometry using passivated implanted silicon detectors. The resolution of the source is a measure of the thickness and homogeneity of the evaporated layer. Searching for the scale of homogeneity

We introduce a statistical quantity, known as the $K$ function, related to the integral of the two--point correlation function. It gives us straightforward information about the scale where clustering dominates and the scale at which homogeneity is reached. We evaluate the correlation dimension, $D_2$, as the local slope of the log--log plot of the $K$ function. We apply this statistic to several stochastic point fields, to three numerical simulations describing the distribution of clusters and finally to real galaxy redshift surveys. Comparing estimators of the galaxy correlation function

We present a systematic comparison of some usual estimators of the 2--point correlation function, some of them currently used in Cosmology, others extensively employed in the field of the statistical analysis of point processes. At small scales, it is known that the correlation function follows reasonably well a power--law expression $\xi(r) \propto r^{-\gamma}$. The accurate determination of the exponent $\gamma$ (the order of the pole) depends on the estimator used for $\xi(r)$; on the other hand, its behavior at large scale gives information on a possible trend to homogeneity. The performance of thin layers produced by molecular plating as α-particle sources

Abstract Sources for α-spectroscopy studies were prepared. Constant current density molecular plating was used to produce layers containing the α-particle emitter 147 Sm. Different parameters of the molecular plating process were varied, namely the plating solvent (an isopropanol/isobutanol mixture, pyridine, and N , N -dimethylformamide), the applied deposition time (90, 180, and 360 min), and the surface roughness of the deposition substrate (ca. 10, 20, and 300 nm). Abstract In this paper the use of the Filtered Back Projection (FBP) Algorithm, in order to reconstruct tomographic images using the high energy (200–250 MeV) proton beams, is investigated. The algorithm has been studied in detail with a Monte Carlo approach and image quality has been analysed and compared with the total absorbed dose. A proton Computed Tomography (pCT) apparatus, developed by our group, has been fully simulated to exploit the power of the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. The Ising square lattice in aL�M geometry: A model for the effect of surface steps on phase transitions in adsorbed monolayers

Critical phenomena in adsorbed monolayers on surfaces are influenced by limited substrate homogeneity, such as surface steps. We consider the resulting finite-size and boundary effects in the framework of a lattice gas system with nearest neighbor attraction in aL×M geometry, with two free boundaries of lengthM≫L, and periodic boundary conditions in the other direction (along the direction of the steps). This geometry thus models a “terrace” of the stepped surface, and adatoms adsorbed on neighboring terraces are assumed to be non-interacting.
