Towards the fluorogenic detection of peroxide explosives through host-guest chemistry

2018

[EN] Two dansyl-modified beta-cyclodextrin derivatives (1 and 2) have been synthesized as host-guest sensory systems for the direct fluorescent detection of the peroxide explosives diacetone diperoxide (DADP) and triacetone triperoxide (TATP) in aqueous media. The sensing is based on the displacement of the dansyl moiety from the cavity of the cyclodextrin by the peroxide guest resulting in a decrease of the intensity of the fluorescence of the dye. Both systems showed similar fluorescent responses and were more sensitive towards TATP than DADP.

Carbon Nanotubes Conjugated with Triazole-Based Tetrathiafulvalene-Type Receptors for C60 Recognition

2019

Fullerene receptors prepared by a twofold CuI -catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction with -extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) have been covalently linked to singlewalled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The nanoconjugates obtained were characterized by several analytical, spectroscopic and microscopic techniques (TEM, FTIR, Raman, TGA and XPS), and evaluated as C60 receptors by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The complexation between the exTTF-triazole receptor in the free state and C60 was also studied by UV-Vis and 1 H NMR titrations, and compared with analogous triazole-based tweezer-type receptors containing the electron-acceptor 11,11,12,12-t…

Crystallography of encapsulated molecules.

2017

The crystallography of supramolecular host–guest complexes is reviewed and discussed as a part of small molecule crystallography. In these complexes, the host binds the guests through weak supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen and halogen bonding, cation–π, anion–π, C–H–π, π–π, C–H–anion interactions and the hydrophobic effect. As the guest often shows severe disorder, large thermal motion and low occupancies, the reliable crystallographic determination of the guest can be very demanding. The analysis of host–guest interactions using tools such as Hirshfeld and cavity volume surface analysis will help to look closely at the most important host–guest interactions. The jewel in the cr…

Supramolecular Heteropolyoxopalladate {Pd15} Cluster Host Encapsulating a {Pd2} Dinuclear Guest: [PdII2-{H16-nPdII15O10(PO4)10}]n-

2011

Ahigh-nuclearity polyoxopalladate compound, [PdII2⊂{H7PdII15O10(PO4)10}]9 {PdII17}, comprising a {Pd15} host occupied by a {Pd2} guest and the parent pristine “empty” [H7PdII15O10(PVO4)10]13 {Pd15} cluster have both been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, 31P NMR, CSI-MS, and XPS. The encapsulated {Pd2} has a short PdII PdII distance within the {Pd15} host. Solution studies indicate that the empty host and filled guest complex are in equilibrium with each other, and UV titrations revealed a binding constant of ca. 103 for the guest PdII ions, with a binding stoichiometry of almost 2.

Binding of ion pairs and neutral guests by aryl-extended meso‑p-hydroxyphenyl calix[4]pyrrole : The interplay between three binding sites

2023

An aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole with four meso‑p-hydroxyphenyl substituents was investigated as a host for chloride, acetate, and benzoate anions. Crystal structures of pyridinium and imidazolium chloride complexes were obtained in which chloride ions are hydrogen bonded exo-cavity to the upper rim hydroxyl groups, and the aromatic cations are bound to the shallow cavity of the host. Furthermore, the calix[4]pyrrole formed a hydrogen bonded dimeric capsule templated by inclusion of adiponitrile guest in the endo-cavity binding site. NMR titrations revealed the preference of the OH groups of the host to bind anionic guests in solution. Benzoate anion had the highest binding constant (4 700 …

Template-controlled synthesis of chiral cyclohexylhemicucurbit[8]uril

2015

Enantiomerically pure cyclohexylhemicucurbit[8]uril (cycHC[8]), possessing a barrel-shaped cavity, has been prepared in high yield on a gram scale from either (R,R,N,N')-cyclohex-1,2-diylurea and formaldehyde or cycHC[6]. In either case, a dynamic covalent library is first generated from which the desired cycHC can be amplified using a suitable anion template.

Confinement inside a Crystalline Sponge Induces Pyrrole To Form N−H⋅⋅⋅π Bonded Tetramers

2021

Based on the DFT‐level calculated molecular volume (V mol ) of pyrrole and its liquid density, pyrrole manifests the highest liquid density coefficient LD c (defined as [V mol • density • 0.6023]/FW) value of 0.7. Normal liquids have LD c < 0.63. This very high LD c is due to the strong N‐H … π interactions in solution and hence pyrrole can be considered to be a pseudo‐crystalline liquid. When trapped inside the confined space of the crystalline sponge a reorientation of the N‐H … π interaction is observed leading to specific cyclic N‐H … π tetramers and N‐H … π dimers, verified by single crystal X‐ray crystallographic and computational methods. These tetramers are of the same size as four …

Endo-/Exo- and Halogen Bonded Complexes of Conformationally Rigid Cethyl-2-bromoresorcinarene and aromatic N-oxides

2017

The host–guest complexes of conformationally rigid C-ethyl-2-bromoresorcinarene with aromatic N-oxides were studied using single crystal X-ray crystallography. Unlike that of the conformationally more flexible C-ethyl-2-methylresorcinarene, the C-ethyl-2-bromoresorcinarene cavity forms endo-complexes only with the small pyridine-N-oxides, such as pyridine N-oxide, 2-methyl-, 3-methyl- and 4-methylpyrdine N-oxide, and quinoline N-oxide. The larger 2,4,6-trimethylpyridine, 4-phenylpyridine and isoquinoline N-oxide, and 4,4-bipyridine N,N′-dioxide and 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane N,N′-dioxide do not fit into the host cavity. Instead endo-acetone complexes are formed. Remarkably, differing from th…

Heptagon-Containing Nanographene Embedded into [10]Cycloparaphenylene

2023

We report the synthesis and characterization of a novel type of nanohoop, consisting of a cycloparaphenylene derivative incorporating a curved heptagon-containing π-extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) unit. We demonstrate that this new macrocycle behaves as a supramolecular receptor of curved π-systems such as fullerenes C60 and C70, with remarkably large binding constants (ca. 107 M−1), as estimated by fluorescence measurements. Nanosecond and femtosecond spectroscopic analysis show that these host-guest complexes are capable of quasi-instantaneous charge separation upon photoexcitation, due to the ultrafast charge transfer from the macrocycle to the complexed fullerene. These r…
