ABSTRACTFormation of transmembrane pores by staphylococcal alpha-toxin can provoke a spectrum of events depending on target cell species and toxin dose, and in certain cases, repair of the lesions has been observed. Here, we report that transcriptional processes are activated as a response of cells to low toxin doses. Exposure of monocytic (THP-1) or epithelial (ECV304) cells to 40 to 160 ng/ml alpha-toxin provoked a drop in cellular ATP level that was followed by secretion of substantial amounts of interleukin-8 (IL-8). The accuracy of classifying bogue (Boops boops) according to the fishery from which it was harvested was evaluated by applying several statistical classification techniques to fish parasite abundances. Bogue captured in 2001 in two fisheries off the Atlantic coast of Spain were compared with one off the Spanish Mediterranean coast. C ethyl-2-Methylresorcinarene forms host–guest complexes with aromatic N-oxides through multiple intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds and C–H⋯π interactions. The host shows conformational flexibility to accommodate 3-methylpyridine N-oxide, while retaining a crown conformation for 2-methyl- and 4-methoxypyridine N-oxides highlighting the substituent effect of the guest. By employing the subcomponent self-assembly approach utilizing 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin or its zinc(II) complex, 1H-4-imidazolecarbaldehyde, and either zinc(II) or iron(II) salts, we were able to prepare O-symmetric cages having a confined volume of ca. 1300 Å3 . The use of iron(II) salts yielded coordination cages in the high-spin state at room temperature, manifesting spin-crossover in solution at low temperatures, whereas corresponding zinc(II) salts led to the corresponding diamagnetic analogues. Synthesis and Conformational Properties of Nonsymmetric Pillar[5]arenes and Their Acetonitrile Inclusion Compounds

The catalytic cyclocondensation of 1-butoxy-4-methoxy-2,5-bis(methoxymethyl)benzene (1d) affords a statistical mixture of the regioisomeric pillar[5]arenes 3a–d in high yield. The alkoxy groups are arranged stereoselectively in a mode so that they avoid steric interactions. The rotation of the benzene rings is, at room temperature, fast in terms of the NMR timescale and leads to a de facto Cs symmetry for 3a–c and a C5h symmetry for 3d. All four structural isomers can encapsulate two CH3CN guest molecules. The structure determinations are based on four crystal structure analyses (constitutions) and NMR spectroscopic measurements (conformations).
Tunable Spin-Crossover Behavior of the Hofmann-like Network {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN) 4 ]} through Host-Guest Chemistry

A study of the spin-crossover (SCO) behavior of the tridimensional porous coordination polymer {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN)4]} (bpac=bis(4-pyridyl) acetylene) on adsorption of different mono- and polyhalobenzene guest molecules is presented. The resolution of the crystal structure of {Fe(bpac)[Pt(CN) 4]}A?G (G=1,2,4-trichlorobenzene) shows preferential guest sites establishing I?A?A?A?I? stacking interactions with the host framework. These host-guest interactions may explain the relationship between the modification of the SCO behavior and both the chemical nature of the guest molecule (electronic factors) and the number of adsorbed molecules (steric factors). The present study focuses on eggs, considered pure S. haematobium by genetic characterisation (intergenic ITS region of the rDNA and cox1 mtDNA). Organic fluorophores, particularly stimuli-responsive molecules, are very interesting for biological and material sciences applications, but frequently limited by aggregation- and rotation-caused photoluminescence quenching. A series of easily accessible bipyridinium fluorophores, whose emission is quenched by a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) mechanism, is reported.
