High Flow Nasal Therapy Use in Patients with Acute Exacerbation of COPD and Bronchiectasis: A Feasibility Study

2020

The efficacy and feasibility of high flow nasal therapy (HFNT) use in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and bronchiectasis is unknown. We performed a single-center, single-arm prospective observational study in patients with AECOPD, documented bronchiectasis, pH >= 7.35, respiratory rate (RR) >= 26 breaths/minute despite receiving maximal medical treatment and oxygen via face mask up to 10 L/m. Patients received HFNT (Airvo 2, Fisher & Paykel) at a gas flow of 50 L/min and FIO2 adjusted to maintain SpO(2) >= 92%. Dyspnea, rated by Borg scale, RR, arterial blood gases and mucus production (ranging from 1 to 3) were collected befor…

Changes in climatic signals of English oak tree-ring width and cross-section area of earlywood vessels in Latvia during the period 1900–2009

2012

Abstract We investigated changes in response of wood formation in English oak (Quercus robur L.) to climatic factors since 1900. It was hypothesised that the effect of winter and spring temperatures has weakened, while summer precipitation has become limiting. Increment cores were taken from 40 sites across Latvia. Tree-ring width and cross-section area of earlywood vessels were measured and cross-dated. Regional chronologies were built by pooling time series of trees within two regions of Latvia (western and eastern region), which differed in continentality. Climatic signals differed between the proxies (tree-ring width and earlywood vessel cross-section area) and between regions. Mean cro…

Selective quantification of humidity and ammonia by optical excitation of molecular semiconductor-doped insulator (MSDI) sensors

2015

MSDI (molecular semiconductor-doped insulator) ammonia sensors have been investigated using cyclic optical excitation as multi-signal generation method. This method enables a selective quantification of both humidity in the range of 30–70 %rh and ammonia concentration in the range of 0–30 ppm with a single sensor at room temperature.

Integrated production of fresh water, sea salt and magnesium from sea water

2012

Seawater desalination is becoming an important source of fresh water in several countries all around the world. One of the main drawbacks of desalination processes, however, is related to the disposal of large quantities of concentrated brine, which is an always-present by-product of the process. An integrated production of fresh water and salts may be achieved using the discharge brine from a desalination plant as a feed for conventional salt ponds, with the advantages of using brine more concentrated than sea water and, in the case of thermal desalination plants, warmer than sea water. By doing so, the process is faster as a consequence of the enhancement of evaporation rate on the surfac…

Meridional gradients of light absorbing carbon over northern Europe

2008

In situ measurements have been made in the upper troposphere of the properties of particles containing light absorbing carbon (LAC). These measurements, made in late November 2006 over northern Europe, show that the average LAC mass concentration varies between 1 and 5 ng m−3 over a latitude range 50° to 70°N, with maxima at 50° and 66°. The relative fraction of all particles larger than 0.1 µm that contain LAC decreases at higher latitudes. The derived extinction coefficient, which also increases with latitude, reaches a maximum of 1.4 Mm−1 at 66°. The air mass histories associated with the LAC were evaluated with back trajectory analysis using wind field analysis from the European Center …

Sensing properties of ZnO nanostructured layers

2017

Nanostructured ZnO layers have been deposited onto SiO 2 /Si substrates by spray pyrolysis, with previously patterned interdigitated gold electrodes. We have then measured the capacitive and resistive response against ambient parameters such as relative humidity and illumination.

Technical Report regarding the outcome of a campaign of minimally invasive and non-destructive surveys conducted in the mother church of Santa Maria delle Stelle in Comiso (RG) on assignment by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Env…

On the hybrid origin of the C2Salsola divaricata agg. (Amaranthaceae) from C3 and C4 parental lineages

2021

AbstractC2 photosynthesis is characterized by recapturing photorespiratory CO2 by RuBisCO in Kranz-like cells and is therefore physiologically intermediate between C3 and C4 photosynthesis. C2 can be interpreted as an evolutionary precursor of C4 and/or as the result of hybridization between a C3 and C4 lineage. We compared the expression of photosynthetic traits among populations of the Salsola divaricata agg. (C2) from humid subtropical to arid habitats on the coasts of the Canary Islands and Morocco and subjected them to salt and drought treatments. We screened for enhanced C4-like expression of traits related to habitat or treatment. We estimated species trees with a transcriptome datase…

MODEL DAN PELUANG TERJADINYA HUJAN BERDASARKAN KELEMBABAN MENGGUNAKAN REGRESI LOGISTIK BINER DI KABUPATEN MANOKWARI

2020

Manokwari Regrency has a tropical climate. This results in significant rainfall. One factor that stimulates rain is humidity. By using binary logistic regression, the model an chance of rainfall based on humidity can be determined. Logistic regression analysis is used to determine the relationship between categorical  scale response variables and numeric or categoric scale explanatory variables. If response variable used is nominal scale with  two possoble value (0 and 1), then it is called binary logistic regression. Estimation of the model  is done by logit  transformation. The model produce in this  study is g(x) = -23.443 + 0.289  humidity. The accuracy of the model is 70.4 percent and …
