Modélisation numérique d’impacts à hautes vitesses par la méthode sans maillage Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics. Application aux micro-impacts dans …

2021

Investigations on the ballistic behaviours of soft tissue materials are significant research in a medical and pharmaceutical framework. They mainly focus on particles penetrating or traveling into the soft materials. For instance, in the needle-free drug delivery, the micro-scale particles as drug powders are injected into skin with high velocity, and several factors should be considered such as the particle diameters, trajectories, and momentum or velocities of projectile in this process. There have been investigated by some experiments, but there is still no study from the numerical insights. The numerical methods are suitable to study these kinds of processes. Although grid-based methods …

Toward a scientific and personal biography of Tullio Levi-Civita (1873–1941)

2005

International audience; Tullio Levi-Civita was one of the most important Italian mathematicians in the early part of the 20th century, contributing significantly to a number of research fields in mathematics and physics. In addition, he was involved in the social and political life of his time and suffered severe political and racial persecution during the period of Fascism. He tried repeatedly and in several cases successfully to help colleagues and students who were victims of anti-Semitism in Italy and Germany. His scientific and private life is well documented in the letters and documents contained in his Archive. The authors' aim is to illustrate the events of his life by means of his …

Interpreting and modelling field data for wastewater dispersion into sea trough dimensional analysis

2008

This paper deals with the mathematical and experimental characterization of a coastal urban wastewater discharge in the South Tyrrhenian Sea, namely the Golfo di Palermo, western Sicily (Italy). The stretch of water lying before the central part of the capital town receives the wastewater originating from about 200 000 inhabitants. The sewage is currently still discharged on-shore without any prior treatment by a free-surface outfall called “Porta Felice”. The Municipality is currently implementing a plan to connect the sewerage system of these areas to the main wastewater treatment plant; at the moment, however, no mitigation measure has been applied yet and the quality of the Gulf is stil…

Hydrodynamic response of a loam soil after wetting with different methods

2023

Different points in a field can be wetted with different natural or artificial rainfall amounts and intensities. Therefore, a non-uniform soil wetting could occur during short-term monitoring of soil hydrodynamic parameters and its global effect on soil characterization is not easily predictable. For an initially dry loam soil, a sequence of three beerkan infiltration runs was performed at fixed sampling points in a period of two weeks. Immediately after the first beerkan run, the soil was perturbed by adding an additional water volume differing with the sampling point by the amount of water (0, 100 or 227 mm) and the application methodology (rainfall simulation, another beerkan run). As co…

The solubilisation behaviour of some dichloroalkanes in aqueous solutions of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers: a dynamic light scattering, fluorescenc…

2006

The aggregation behaviour of PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymers in water and in water + chlorinated additive mixtures was studied by means of fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The copolymers were chosen such as to investigate the effects of molecular architecture (L35 and 10R5) and molecular weight by keeping constant the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance (F88 and F108). 1,2-Dichloroethane was used as a prototype of water basins contaminants. The hydrodynamic radius of the block copolymer aggregates (R(h,M)) and the intensity ratio of pyrene of the first and the third vibrational band (I(1)/I(3)) were determined as a function of…

New folate-functionalized biocompatible block copolymer micelles as potential anti-cancer drug delivery systems

2006

Abstract The main objective of this study was to synthesize novel folic acid-functionalized diblock copolymer micelles and evaluate their solubilization of two poorly water-soluble anti-tumor drugs, tamoxifen and paclitaxel, which suffer from low water solubility and/or poor hydrolytic stability. The diblock copolymer consisted of a permanently hydrophilic block comprising 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) residues and a pH-sensitive hydrophobic block comprising 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DPA) residues. Folic acid (FA) was conjugated to the end of the MPC block so that this group was located on the micelle periphery. Tamoxifen- and paclitaxel-loaded micelles were…

Inulin-based polymer coated SPIONs as potential drug delivery systems for targeted cancer therapy

2014

This paper deal with the synthesis and characterization of PEGylated squalene-grafted-inulin amphiphile capable of self-assembling and self-organizing into nanocarriers once placed in aqueous media. It was exploited as coating agent for obtaining doxorubicin loaded superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) endowed with stealth like behavior and excellent physicochemical stability. Inulin was firstly modified in the side chain with primary amine groups, followed in turn by conjugation with squalenoyl derivatives through common amidic coupling agents and PEGylation by imine linkage. Polymer coated SPIONs were so obtained by spontaneous self-assembling of inulin copolymer onto magnet…

Nucleation and accretion of bioelastomeric fibers at biological temperatures and low concentrations.

1988

Quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) studies are reported, which address the early stages of aggregation of the polypentamer poly(VPGVG). This reflects the major primary structural feature of native elastin. The study is focused on the region of the phase diagram which in both its temperature and concentration range is closest to the state of affairs occurring in the course of bioelastogenesis by progressive synthesis of the precursor protein. Results here reported allow for the first time a self-consistent view of the physics of elastogenesis, and specify the role of the region of metastability and of that of instability of the phase diagram in the non-chaotic, orderly formation of elasto…

Monitoring human parvovirus B19 virus-like particles and antibody complexes in solution by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

2004

AbstractFluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) was used in monitoring human parvovirus B19 virus-like particle (VLP) antibody complexes from acute phase and pastimmunity serum samples. The Oregon Green 488-labeled VLPs gave an average diffusion coefficient of 1.7x10exp-7 cm(2)s(-1) with an apparent hydrodynamic radius of 14 nm. After incubation of the fluorescent VLPs with an acute phase serum sample, the mobility information obtained from the fluorescence intensity fluctuation by autocorrelation analysis showed an average diffusion coefficient of 1.5x10exp-8 cm(2)s(-1), corresponding to an average radius of 157 nm. In contrast, incubation of the fluorescent VLPs with a pastimmunity se…

Synthesis of polymer nanogels by electro-Fenton process: investigation of the effect of main operation parameters

2017

Recently, electro-Fenton (EF) process has been shown as a promising, facile, effective, low cost and environmentally-friendly alternative for synthesizing polymer nanogels suitable as biocompatible nanocarriers for emerging biomedical applications. Here, the electrochemically-assisted modification of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) by EF process was studied to assess the role of key operation parameters for a precise modulation of polymer crosslinking and its functionalization with [sbnd]COOH and succinimide groups. The dimensions of the nanogels, in terms of hydrodynamic radius (Rh) and weight-average molecular weight (Mw), can be tuned up by controlling the electrolysis time, current density…
